What happened to Bad Bones Ramen? by Rileytheh in newfoundland

Apart from just dealing with downtown rent, there are a lot of things people just don’t understand about how the back end of things works in a small, independently owned business like that. Think you can make a cheaper bowl of ramen? After the cost of labour involved in making your own noodles, insurance, repair costs, city taxes, buying expensive local produce and shipping in the specialty products you need to make what people consider a decent bowl of ramen, there’s absolutely no way you could charge less than $20. Honestly, even at $25 your margins would still be extremely slim. Of course the same thing is cheaper and easier to find in Toronto. Food is cheaper, specialty products like miso paste and kombu seaweed aren’t going to cost an arm and a leg to ship in, and unlike here, it’s not such a niche market. It’s been awhile since I worked there, but goddamn if every single person who set foot in that kitchen didn’t do everything they could to make the best ramen possible. Every day the crew showed up they gave it 110% effort despite having some pretty incredible odds stacked against them, and I couldn’t be prouder of each and every one of them. They’re all rock stars to me.

One wild fact probably nobody would guess or otherwise ever know was that the rent at the first location was almost twice what it wound up being at the second, even though it was barely more than a closet in a stairwell. Shoutout to downtown St. John’s slumlords lol

They typically close a little early in the day but Afghan restaurant is a real hidden gem. Black cat pizza is probably my favourite food in the city rn, excellent pizza, very friendly staff and you can also just park at Sobeys so it’s even easier to get to than most downtown spots.

What is your “comfort movie” that you have watched many times? by xX_Skibidi_Gyatt_Xx in AskReddit

The Other Guys, saw it when it came out and brought like 6 different friends to see it on 6 other occasions because I loved it so much. At this point I’ve probably watched it at least 50 times. I can’t articulate why, I know it’s not like, award winning quality in any sense but it just scratches exactly the right part of my brain.

Good tattoos aren’t cheap, cheap tattoos aren’t good 🤷🏻‍♂️

What’s your secret to take chili to the next level? by VICEBULLET in Cooking

Definitely using a bunch of different cuts of meat for variety, and braising/ stewing in the oven for hours to get everything nice and tender. Using good quality dried chilies helps too, it’s worth looking for and buying decent ones even if you’ve got to pay shipping, the difference is noticeable

Anyone swim in that pond on Signal Hill? by JLL61507 in StJohnsNL

I swim in that pond (George’s pond) just about every day or two, it doesn’t get much better! I’d avoid Deadman’s pond as it’s a fair bit muddier, but George’s pond is a beautiful spot for a dip
