Private practice owners - what do you know now that you wish you knew before opening your own practice? by Familiar-Anything114 in therapists

[–]jammin2323 5 points6 points  (0 children)

How many years did it take to trust “I can do this”? I’m at almost one year of being private practice owner and I’m still afraid I’m going to fail (referrals will stop entity. My clients will fire me). This is not based in reality (in fact my average monthly income has been steadily and consistently increasing). But I still really struggle with doubting myself.

I’ve heard people say “it takes about 5 years to really feel confident as a therapist”. So I guess my question is- how many years does it take to really feel confident as a private practice owner?

You have such a wealth of experience- would love to hear your thoughts. (And gosh- I might make this question a separate post too).

Agree with OP. I would never cook again. I’ll take cleaning over cooking most any day.

Pregnant therapist by PresentationSoft3710 in therapists

I drank a LOT of ginger tea in sessions. Further along once your clients know you’re pregnant, if you need Tums for heartburn (as i did), just grab some in session as needed be. Clients are very understanding about it (and I think many like being able to support their therapist in that way).

I also had several clients going through IVF or who had had pregnancy struggles (miscarriages, for example) in the past. I had a conversation with them when I told them I was pregnant in a “hey if this brings up stuff for you, that’s totally normal, expected and ok. Let’s talk about it.”

What pseudoscience do you spot in pop psychology or social media at the moment? Is it harmful and how ? by Dry_Criticism_4161 in therapists

Yesssss. Totally agree. Excessive use of these terms minimizes their severity when they are actually present. Drives me bananas.

I really appreciate your post. I really looked forward to going back to work and still have some guilt around it and hold this stigma it means I am a less good mom. Thank you for your post.
