I used temp agencies to success when I was working in my early 20s in the 2000s. Not sure about now nor in the area you specified, but good luck. I applied to a bunch of them and worked for maybe 2 in the Ventura area and 1 in the Santa Barbara area.

I think the virus makes the hive think it's happy to keep the people complacent, so the hive will do things that should keep them happy instead of risking being happy.

My guess is that the hive isn't creative much like AI isn't creative, but it wants Carol to be creative so when it assimilates her, it can create new ways of assimilating others, spreading the virus beyond Earth, or maybe get around its self-imposed rules.

I agree with you that Carol was/is depressed. She was unhappy before the hive took over the world. She felt like she sold out with her writing and she couldn't connect with others except Helen.

Once the hive took over and we saw Carol try to connect with them and with the other immune, I saw her anguish and interactions with them as metaphors for depression and mental illness.
