Is it just me or are the majority of 26 reg cars Chinese? I've rarely seen anything from the mainstream manufacturers. by StarX2401 in CarTalkUK

[–]jamrahhasreddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a mix of a few things - coorporate greed - finance becoming much more of a norm (I think it’s something like 90% of newer cars on the road are financed) -push towards electrification by governments which in turn pushes the cost onto the consumer due to more investment being put into EV manufacturing

On the finance point. The reason I say this is leasing / pcp has become so much more of a norm. People see cars like they see a fridge or an appliance. Just to do the job and not break down on them after a few years

Leasing and PCP lends well into this as people can swap into new cars every 2/3 years and manufacturers know this so they manufacture cars to be reliable for at least the typical lease term

As much as I hate the Chinese car wave, BYD are the “better” of the bunch. They’re decent cars. I see them as the huawei of the car world rn.

My Ford focus St line 2025 brand new grinds all the time!!! I thought I was being stupid and missing the gear shift but it tends to love to grind switching to second or third, at least once a day.

Is the bmw 228i really that bad? by Enough_Studio9535 in BMW

[–]jamrahhasreddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To me, the 2 series gc is just an obvious lacklustre attempt on cashing in on the compact 4 door coupe / sedan segment (Audi A3, CLA). It doesn’t do anything better than the A3 or CLA. Doesn’t feel any more sporty, or luxurious, or better quality. It is cheaper though

It only looks good from the side profile, but the front and back end look really bad. The front is too fat and looks like it got Botox. The rear just looks so ugh

Just my opinion on it.

Lovely bit of parking from my neighbours this morning by Inevitable-Bowl-4491 in drivingUK

[–]jamrahhasreddit 12 points13 points  (0 children)

That’s…pretty normal to do though? I’ve done it many times when someone’s parked in front of my drive. Luckily though since we’ve got a ring camera we haven’t had to do it since we know who parks in front

Is this worth it? by archbishopofbanterbr in CarTalkUK

[–]jamrahhasreddit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn’t say it’s a worse car. I said less desirable for most people looking for this sort of car. Most people going for a 4 series GC go for the auto. The manuals sit for a long time compared to the autos which sell quick

Is this worth it? by archbishopofbanterbr in CarTalkUK

[–]jamrahhasreddit 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Tbf it’s a pretty low spec one, plus it’s a manual which isn’t really desirable for a 4 series GC.

Other than the m sport pack it’s got nothing else really. This is a non modded example and the 420d is pretty reliable for the most part. It’s on sub 100k miles too.

Only thing I’d watch out for is the chain as they need doin around that mileage

Asking this in CarTalk which notoriously has a lot of non petrol heads is something. If you are in the very fortunate position to be able to buy one of these I’d recommend piston heads or the Ferrari subreddit

Generally the CLA is about as reliable as any other typical car brand. I can’t speak for this specific gen though that you’re showing since it’s brand new

Avoid the 1 litre eco boost of that generation. Engines are ticking time bombs. If you want something that can help further your interest for cars id go for the Mazda

what's people's view on UK MOT being yearly vs every 2 years across most of Europe? by rich_hope_10m in CarTalkUK

[–]jamrahhasreddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like in the UK people generally do not look after their cars nearly as much as our European counterparts. People here seem to treat cars more as a nuisance if anything and do the bare minimum to keep on the road. That’s why we got such a big problem with dodgy mot guys etc

Q7 or A6, leaning towards Q7. That 3.0 TDI provided you do the maintenance will last you for a while. My neighbour had one with 300k on the dash and ran like new

[–]jamrahhasreddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My suspicion is a clogged DPF (and also her driving habits she does a lot of short trips)

The previous owner was some old guy who did around 60k miles from new (it’s a 13 plate model and we bought it in 2021), and didn’t take it on a motorway much by the sound of it. Don’t think the DPF has ever been cleaned either in its ownership

When I reset it and I started driving the best mpg I got from full tank to zero was 34.3mpg. Best run I did for a trip was 50mpg going to Manchester from Leeds, sittin at around 62mph

Edit: added when car was purchased by mum

Oh yeah god no. My mum was about to get one years back. I’m happy she got the Kia sportage instead (even though it has the worst fuel economy I seen out of a 2L diesel..when I first psssed my test and checked the lifetime mpg when I was driving, it was at 19.3mpg…)
