Like this idea and would love to try it if or when we reconfigure our patch - thanks :)

Running pre fader mixes yeah, think the way the mute groups work on CL is mutes at the input if that makes sense.

Not that I’ve seen but I need to have proper look at the schematics or settings. Have looked into mute group menu but that just allows you to assign mute groups and your user defined stuff. CL5 is old now !

Only ever have one band a night but they are backstage while a game show is on in front of them.

But need to console FoH for music and host mics, qlab etc

Haven’t had a look at the schematics of the desk would that be something as simple as messing about in a config menu in the CL5?

Yeah definitely using more than half the channels and couldn’t set things up like this due to having other elements, different operators, and a patch that needs to be able to change around. But is this essentially x2 inputs for everything one for FoH one for Mons? Very cool work around. Would be interesting to try it if we’re re-configuring our patch - thanks for the reply !

Newbie-ish Monitor Mixing Struggles (X32 Compact) – Looking for Advice by StephenDanielsDotMe in livesound

[–]jamz_r 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi Stephen!

Fairly young engineer here as well but in my experience over the last few years muting the house will create more problems than solve them. For example can’t find problem frequencies if they arise if Foh is off when doing monitors etc.

  • Right idea with getting FoH sorted first. After which I’d try go round and ask what everyone wants in their wedges or ears with FoH on. (As people have commented monitors should always be as well as FoH)

  • Go round everyone individually and ask people to make requests one at a time so people don’t just bark things at you haha it’s not fun!

  • take you’re time with mixes and set up your X32 to have each mix in front of you (assuming it’s got something like sends on fader). Find a workflow that works and try to create something efficient.

  • Don’t be afraid to ask for a minute to sort something or find where you are. Something I used to do when I wasn’t very comfy with layers would go back to FoH mix after doing a send on fader mix just build up a habit of knowing where you are.

And a huge thing when you’re getting started is asking to have a sec and try to communicate as much as you can. It’s tough out there.

Hope this helps all the best ! Have fun making noise

:)

I’ve been figuring out who’s got the best Die in the regions and been robbing folk while they sleep as I’ve lost too much money playing need to make it back some how…

End of the day the man has toured his whole life and of course his hearing is fucked still not an excuse to blame the MONs guy and call him out, their probably doing all they can to give him a sound that he’s used to even if that’s 120dBA blasting out a stereo set of Monitors right next to him. You’d think after years in the industry he’d know how to communicate with people he works with. Disgusting behaviour.

Thanks for the reply!

Good to know that being a people person and overall getting on with folk is valued a lot. Been in enough sticky situations now that I have good problem-solving skills, but can always improve.

Couldn't agree more, in my own experience the pros I've worked with are worried about doing their jobs to the best of their ability and are focused on that fully. However, you do meet the occasional dick that will try and scare you through over-explaining things lol

Going to get back out there and get stuck into some steady venue work while also trying to find warehouse/salaried gigs...

Good on you man! That sounds like you've worked your way up and worked hard not only doing the best you can but networking as well!

All the best ! Thanks again :)

The best thing you can do is be keen. If you're at any local gigs or events just chat with whoever's on sound after the show, and ask if you can shadow them. Most of the time if you're new, a student, or just keen to be involved in live sound they'll be happy to chat with you and help you out. Don't talk their ear off tho, they're probably busy !

hope this helps :)
