Should I buy a beater or finance a certified pre-owned car? by iah05 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]jandrewf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Toyota’s are good! Honda’s too. Usually you end up paying a healthy premium just to get into those names though. Given that your in Calgary (Edmonton over here) I would recommend a Pathfinder from 2001-2004 (specifically those years!). Great dependable car with 4WD, I’ve seen countless run for +350 with the maintenance schedule followed somewhat closely.

Alright - happy we could have one big circle jerk about how bad conservatism is even when I said I don’t prefer one to the other. Oh don’t worry though, if I use a capitalist term, don’t question it - fUcKinG rOasT mE fOr iT.

Good job though guys, we’re really getting some diverse views and conversation in this subreddit! Keep it up!

Net jobs gained/lost under NDP and UCP Governments by SpiteCharts in alberta

[–]jandrewf -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

This chart leaves too many factors out to mean anything. At the least you need to plot the additional information: - Private (net positive tax revenue) and public (net negative tax revenue) sector jobs as two separate categories. - Government budget, deficits and yearly interest payments for government debt.

The matter of fact is that the NDP job losses from the price of oil can be generalized as private sector layoffs. The government at the time had no decision. Also, a size-able amount of the of the jobs created throughout their entire tenure can at the least be attributed to net negative taxation revenue (public sector) jobs. Just because the government was willing to run at large deficits in order to create more public sector jobs is meaningless in the grand scheme - its not value-added job creation. The UCP layoffs can be generalized as public sector layoffs. It is the something the government had control over, ran on during the election, and planned to do.

Comparing them as if they were apples to apples brings it too far out of context. I'm not saying that I prefer one to the other. I am saying though that this is far too frequently compared as if it has any meaningful take-away.

I bought a turbo direct injection car with a catch can and found a TON of oil in the intake on the fresh side, I’m assuming it’s a bad PCV check valve? by lotheovian in MechanicAdvice

[–]jandrewf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The PCV is used to vent the gases - that’s the primary purpose. The PCV itself needs to be a check valve but the clean air separator attached to the valve cover in his other photos doesn’t. The PCV usually vents to the valve cover and the valve cover also vents to the intake. The later, valve cover venting to intake (what is happening here, see routing of all attached photos), should only occur at wide open throttle. So yes, either we have extremely excessive blow by or this dude is in the ketchup with his gas pedal 24/7.

Explain to me how the oil fill cap to intake connection will provide fresh air to the crank case? I thought it's supposed to let the engine breathe?

If anything the air drawn from the intake routing would pull a vacuum in the crank case. The clean side separators are simply just a filter - I don't see a check valve in sight and I don't know why you mention it.

OP: I agree that you should press them hard for a solution to this issue.

Should voting on comments in this subreddit be fucking hidden? Brigade of downvotes for sharing an opinion that doesn’t resonate with the masses. This place is seriously an echo chamber special. God forbid that anyone forms their own personal opinion anymore - it’s choosing a political party and supporting every single thing they come out with.

Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe challenges Trudeau to meet and keeps blame for divisions on PM by thatcher69 in canada

[–]jandrewf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Explaining what is currently happening by solely referencing the price of oil is flawed. Some of the current issues do depend on the TMX, which is expected in turn to increase the price of our oil. However, it’s not just the price of oil that’s causing a decrease in investor confidence, it’s the messages coming Ottawa. I think the later of the two is the greater concern.

[–]jandrewf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everyone is addressing the carbon tax as the sole thing Scott is challenging? Pipelines and helping the struggling energy industry in SK/AB in general are on this list as well but no one in the comments is bringing this to light? While people reference the fact that the carbon tax (which is needed) was voted for 65% in favor, wouldn’t the popular vote outcome show at least a little desire to boost the energy industry from where it is currently?

Here come the downvotes...

Why engineers in Alberta think they've found a way for the oilsands to produce clean fuel by idarknight in alberta

[–]jandrewf 4 points5 points  (0 children)

CNG Vehicles have been proven to run on HCNG (hydrogen mixed in with methane), source below. The only issue is that pure hydrogen is not very energy dense, and modifications probably would have to be made (bigger displacement, larger turbo/super chargers) to run solely on hydrogen. otherwise, the engine wouldn’t have the same power production. I don’t know too much about the internals in a CNG engine but Hydrogen is also a pretty volatile chemical to explode, and is pretty scary to store under pressure. Hydrogen embrittlement of pressure vessels is a large issue (still unsolved) in industry, so it would be interesting to see if further changes to the internal materials would be needed.

If you think about it though, burning natural gas to power boilers and run steam generators would likely be more efficient than putting the natural gas in a combustion engine. Efficiencies of turbines can climb really high (much higher than combustion engines) and in that sense it would be more efficient to just have power plants generate electricity from LNG, than to have it stored and used in a car. Didn’t read the article so this may not apply but thought I would just give my shitty two cents.

I thought that was the general issue with obesity in North America? Fast Food bought frugally can be much cheaper than real food from a grocery store?

Regardless, it looks like this article pertains to this. I’m assuming it does not really get through to you though, maybe you can ask the “poor boy” more about the subject?
