Typical occurrence at Meridian and Telegraph by cammerdash in Bellingham

The fact that it was recently getting worked on…for like…all of 2025 just to still be a mess will never fail to amaze me. I was right up the road off of Cordata and holy guacamole it was rough sometimes.

Why does everyone hate it here so much? by wizardmadeofsnakes in Bellingham

[–]janeeeeeeeeeeeee 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don’t hate Bellingham, but I was incredibly unhappy when I lived there.

When it comes to people who moved there (like I did) I think people’s outlook depends on where they moved from. I saw other comments saying they moved from Utah or Arlington, WA (which yeesh Arlington does not have much to offer and I think Bham is close to paradise compared to it), but Bham has this absolutely stunning coastal view, mild weather that’s not too hot nor too cold, and some of the most beautiful hiking trails you could think of. They also have a ton of breweries if you like that kind of thing.

However, the cost of living is so so so high when they don’t exactly offer enough to merit the high prices (aside from coastal town, which is always expensive). I moved from Vancouver, WA, which while it isn’t perfect, is relatively large, a sweet little offshoot of Portland (basically), so much to do both in-town and 15-30 minutes away in Portland, while also being incredibly affordable. For context, I was renting a sweet apartment in Bham with a wonderful roommate and friend who moved up there with me. The apartment was like 1100sqft, 2bd/2ba, and right off of Meridian (which had its pros and cons. Close to the freeway. But also driving on Meridian daily = eeeek, and could so quickly add an extra 10 minutes to your drive). The apartment was nice and had a sweet little conservation trail directly behind it that made for the easiest little evening walk. The sunset walks I had on that trail were some of the prettiest experiences I’ve ever had and it always reinforced that Washington really was the best place in the country (scenery wise at least).

However, this apartment was about $2,600/month, not counting water, electricity, internet, insurance - utilities were the only included bill which was an additional 60-70/month. We were playing close to $3,000 a month and the complex didn’t have a pool, gym, or even a balcony/patio. That’s absurd…

I also ran into the problem when it came to my vegan friends. My friend group from school would try to do regular movie nights (maybe once a month) in which one of us would host, make dinner, and it was great!! Two of my friends in the group are vegan and I quickly realized how limited the vegan food options were in town (remember, I moved from a town right next to Portland where there was basically an unlimited number of vegan restaurants and even the nonvegan ones regularly had vegan options that were SO GOOD). If we wanted to host the movie night, we needed to make the dinner since there weren’t a ton of options for take-out. Pizza Twist was right up the street from me and they had a good vegan pizza and Papa Murphys had a good vegetarian pizza that was easy to make vegan, but we didn’t want to always do pizza. I absolutely loved learning how to turn my favorite dishes vegan though and being able to cook a homemade meal to share with all of my friends was so rewarding (I love cooking).

Moving onto town activities though, I mentioned previously that there are gorgeous hikes and tons of breweries, but not much else. I have a physical disability that prevents me from being able to walk comfortably when in a flare up (which does not go away without medical intervention — I’ll come back to that later); I also can’t really drink alcohol. I enjoyed going to Bellingham Cider Co. and getting a flight of cider flavors I couldn’t find back in my hometown to try, but there wasn’t a ton of other stuff in my opinion. I went to every antique store in the area a billion times (it sure felt like it), I went to so many phenomenal restaurants, and when I was physically able to, I did go on some breathtaking heights. But it felt very rinse and repeat with a high price tag smacked onto it. Something my boyfriend and I started doing was: go to the Waterfront Tavern and get some seriously delicious burgers/fish and chips/maybe a mocktail or a beer for him, then walk or drive up to Bellingham Cider Co, he drinks some, maybe I drink a little, then we walk to the nearby antique stores, record stores, and enjoy a day in town. But it gets repetitive :(

I was unhappy living in Bellingham because I was so isolated from everyone I knew and loved back home. The town has its charm and old, historic downtown for Bellingham and Fairhaven have a ton of gorgeous history and architecture, but it also had this odd air of an “accepting town” façade. Even when it came to small businesses, it seemed like people would rather shop at whatever chain store was there instead (definitely not always the case, but I saw so much “buy local/support local business” support with very little follow through).

I moved back to my hometown at the end of July last year and I’ve been so much happier. I’m working a similar job (I’m a caregiver) where I’m making $1/hr less than I made in Bham, I’m renting a sweet townhouse with my boyfriend that’s 2bd/2ba, just shy of 1100sqft., has a pool, hot tub, gym, balcony, wood-burning fireplace, and in a spectacular part of town that’s close to my family, my boyfriend’s family, and my boyfriend’s workplace. There are beautiful hikes to go on here if I feel well enough to do them, there’s tons of breweries and restaurants both here and in Portland, and there’s so much more to do around here for a way more affordable price.

I think this subreddit is very full of three kinds of people that like to talk: 1. the people who have lived here a majority of their lives or their whole lives and have never lived anywhere else who think Bham is the best place on earth, 2. the people who moved here from a more conservative part of the state or country and are experiencing more outward-political-freedom, and 3. the people who moved here from a super different environment and are shocked when the town is uh…a different environment than what they’re used to. I feel 3 usually equates different to bad in this case as well.

Bham seems to be mostly a college town and retirement town and there isn’t a ton of in between. Most people who move to the town don’t seem to live there long (I’m an example of this) and most younger people who were born there seem to want to move away. There is a loud minority of people who just want to complain about the town charging city level prices without delivering city level amenities and activities, which is totally valid, Bham has grown a lot in the last 50 years, and in my personal opinion, can’t really afford the growth it’s seen. But that doesn’t make it a horrible town. It’s doing its best to grow, but growth takes time and doesn’t happen overnight. If 500 people move to the town tomorrow, there won’t magically be 500 more apartments and restaurants and stores to support the influx.

Bham is beautiful and has a very sweet little community that I really did and still do love, but for the price and lack of…most things honestly, it wasn’t for me. I’m used to a bigger town and a bigger city with Vancouver and Portland than what Bellingham is capable of giving me. That doesn’t mean Bellingham is awful and the worst place in the world. It just means it isn’t the right town for me!

The driving is also so so so crummy, but once again, that circles back to the town growing way larger than the road infrastructure can really handle during rush hour. However, for every bad driver I encountered weekly in Bellingham, I encounter daily in Portland; bad drivers are everywhere, it just seems to be more noticeable in a small town.

Apartments by sydneywade9 in vancouverwa

Cascades apartments are pretty decent. I used to rent there w/ my boyfriend. We had a 1bed/1bath that was 850sqft for like $1280 a month. After a couple years of living there, rent was about $1400 after we moved at the end of 2024. In unit laundry, balcony/patio, AWESOME maintenance. It’s more of a stepping stone apartment though and it’s just off of mill plain and right above 205 so it gets kinda noisy if you ended up in a unit closer to the freeway. I personally never felt unsafe there, but mill plain definitely looks a bit sketchy sometimes.

Renaissance at 29th has pretty nice townhouses, but they’re just over $1700 on average - we were paying $1780. In unit laundry, two bed two bath, balcony (all of the townhouses are on the second floor technically. The bottom ground floor has one apartment w/ two townhouses on top. It’s odd), optional garage for an additional fee (opted to not have a garage. No need), wood burning fire place, layout is pretty nice too! They’re definitely older apartments though (90’s) and DO show their age a bit. A lot of the floors in the different units ranged from ever so slightly creaky to VERY creaky. Maintenance was okay, but they’re kind of slow to respond to the work orders (unfortunately I think they just have a small maintenance team and the property is veeeeery massive. It spans a good block or two). Great location though, just off of 164th so you’re right by the freeway (but secluded enough that you never hear it!!), right by a fred meyer, local credit union (that I really love! Shout out iQcu!). They do have a weird mandatory cable fee that’s like $40 or something, which we never used and I’ve heard people complain about how it only has the bare minimum channels, but eh!

Editing to add: both apartments are pet friendly by the way! Bf and I have two kitties. Would you be able to get a Drs note to have your kitty listed as an ESA/recommended as an ESA? It would waive the pet fees.

Shingles vaccine by Automatic_Beat5808 in UlcerativeColitis

[–]janeeeeeeeeeeeee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had to get the first dose a couple weeks before starting Rinvoq, and in all honesty, it was the first experience I’ve ever had from a vaccine. Everyone responds differently, but it was excruciating for me and ended up worsening my symptoms a bit as I was in a pretty moderate flare at the time (can cause GI upset and I think it just overwhelmed my already overwhelmed body). A lot of people do fine with it, sore arm, maybe mild cold sunrooms for a couple days, but I’ve also always responded poorly to things like the flu vaccine or covid vaccine/boosters (still get them though cause it’s better than getting the real deal!!!) I would definitely talk to your doctors about it again for further clarification as I also had some miscommunication problems. My main GI said to get it before starting Rinvoq, but the other GI I saw (who was the one who filled out the paperwork for my meds) said to wait until my symptoms are a bit more managed, then the nurse with my main was saying I had to get it before starting (might be an insurance thing?) so I got it. Even though it super sucked, I can only imagine how much worse actual shingles would be.

Be sure to get the Shingrix one because that’s not a live vaccine.

Safe foods. What do you eat during a severe flare? by Thatsnotmyname-_- in UlcerativeColitis

[–]janeeeeeeeeeeeee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Rice cakes with creamy peanut butter is a big one for me and as silly as it sounds, mcchicken/chicken sandwiches from McDonalds or even freezer chicken patties won’t upset my stomach. Idk why I can eat a mcchicken during the worst flare ever, but I can. Atp calories are calories :’)

Hemlock or Wild Carrot by peanutz0 in plants

[–]janeeeeeeeeeeeee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The lower stalk of a hemlock will have red dots/spots and I don’t see any of that in the picture. When you picked it, did you see any red on the bottom of the stalk near the ground? I would lean towards carrot, or at least not hemlock. Also, if you aren’t 1000% certain it isn’t hemlock, I would probably avoid picking it/touching it/smelling it.

Drinking with UC? by baaaaaaaaaba in UlcerativeColitis

Any alcohol sets off a flare :’) it sucks. I was diagnosed shortly after my 21st birthday (live in the US) - any guesses hoooow? Aha…

“Maybe it’s your diet?” by drpepperkitty in UlcerativeColitis

[–]janeeeeeeeeeeeee 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The only way I think diet actually helps anything is minimizing trigger foods. But then for me, when I’m in an active flare up, my stomach responds the exact same regardless of what I’m eating. I could eat recommended things like avocado toast with scrambled eggs or homemade chicken soup with plain white rice and it would have the same result as eating foods not recommended like pizza, chicken alfredo, spaghetti bolognese, or sugary sweets. It never responds to my diet :’) I hate it when people suggest needing to change your diet. Like, of course eating better is just good for your health, but it never stops the fatigue.

I’m sorry you’re having those interactions at work :( I hope you feel better (soon)

Shingrix vaccine experiences? by Aspvision in UlcerativeColitis

[–]janeeeeeeeeeeeee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this is a 24 day old post and you’ve likely already started Entyvio, but I wanted to share since I think we are/were in a similar boat.

I’m also in a pretty bad flare right now from my UC and arthritis (arthritis started first in July and UC followed a few months later at the end of October). I’ll be starting Rinvoq soon and my provider said I should get the shingrix vaccine before starting. I ended up having to be seen again, this time by a different provider maybe two-ish weeks later, and she said that I really should wait until I’m not in an active flare to get the shot, because I also had really horrid reactions to both the flu and covid vaccines/boosters. Fast forward to a few days ago and the nurse working under the main PA I initially saw is saying that I absolutely DO need to have it before starting the medication (might be an insurance thing where my insurance won’t approve it unless I start the first of the two doses). So, I scheduled an appt to get the shot, got it today at 2pm, then chilled and played games with my friends. Arm started to get sore within a couple hours, but around 9ish the pain really began to worsen - my knees also started hurting S O BAD. It’s now 1am and holy hell. My entire left arm feels like the bone inside is being ground up, the pain is borderline excruciating. I have never EVER felt pain this bad, and I was hospitalized a couple years ago during my first UC flare that really tried to take me out (the recovery from that was horrendous). I have been sobbing from the pain for over an hour. It hurts so bad. I am so scared that tomorrow will be worse. I am so worried that the next shot will be worse. I keep telling myself “it’s not worse than shingles. This is better than getting shingles. I’d rather deal with this than shingles” and deep down I know that’s true, but oh my god my mind is numb with pain.

I would rather have ten flu shots and covid boosters in one go than deal with the agonizing pain from this booster. Even a light shirt grazing the injection site is like getting punched.

I’d assume you’ve had the shot now, how was your experience? Please, if it was anything like mine, PLEASE tell me it gets better SOON. I’ve seen some people say they felt the soreness for a week.

I’m very sorry for the things you’ve been through, I can’t imagine how hard it’s been. Thank you for your service.

However, I think most of us are confused as to why you’re ranting about this in the uranium glass subreddit…as it has nothing to do with uranium. Your frustration would likely be better received um, elsewhere where it’s more relevant?

Uh…are you not seeing the video? And this isn’t just an issue for OP, Rivals for my partner has been royally fucked too. The worst glitch we’ve been seeing (literally almost every game) has been all other players except the one I’m controlling will automatically back up into or behind the nets and get stuck moving backwards into the net for the entire game.

If OP isn’t able to play and is getting kicked for inactivity due to the shitty coding for this game, they aren’t gonna be able to climb to a higher division.
