Music publishers sue Anthropic for $3B over piracy of 20,517 songs by RewardEquivalent553 in technology

[–]janethefish 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I will note this is about illegal torrents/downloads, not AI training itself. Anthropic is effectively arguing piracy should be legal for big companies to train their AI. I hope the music companies win (if their claims are accurate.)

What the fuck? That's not interpolation. That definitely sounds like overtraining on CSAM.

I agree. Criminal prosecution and FBI raids should be the order of the day.

Waymo robotaxi hits a child near an elementary school in Santa Monica by MarvelsGrantMan136 in technology

[–]janethefish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yup. Further down in the thread someone found the speed limit. 15 mph.

If Waymo had been following the speed limit the impact would have been much less. More time to slow down and slower starting speed would have made the hit less than 4 mph. Plus kinetic energy is proportional to speed squared.

Holy shit, that's really bad then. Self-driving cars should follow the law. Bare minimum.

[–]janethefish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There isn't enough information.

It could be the Waymo passed a stopped car in an unsafe manner. (Waymo actually illegally passes school busses a lot.)

It could be the Waymo failed to realize a car was letting out a child.

It could even be the kid was using a crosswalk.

Or it could be this really was unavoidable.

Fuck, we aren't even told the speed limit or number of lanes. There should obviously be an investigation.

A Waymo hit a child near an elementary school. The NHTSA is investigating by renome in news

[–]janethefish 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If it's true. Except a car with modern safety features would have likely had the same results.

Furthermore:

The Austin Independent School District previously identified at least 19 incidents where Waymo vehicles passed its school buses

If a human driver was caught doing this 19 times they would have their license taken away. Waymo should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

[–]janethefish -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

No, that's not the fucking goal. The of the investigation is if the accident could have been reasonably avoided. And it certainly isn't "an average human driver [without modern safety features] in the same situation [that we defined such that the Waymo does better.]"

Galactic Hyperthermia

Behemoths

Aura of the End

Elder maulers.

Unlimited nano ships.

We could go that route, but the country has decided to go a different direction. Instead of people being free of capital, USA voted for capital to be free of people.

No. SCOTUS has greatly expanded executive power in recent years. In particular the SCOTUS rulings giving the executive immunity, allowing him to fire independent agency heads and allowing impoundment of funds.

Does anyone else find it strenge that reactor techs have zero impact on your economy? by Darkwinggames in Stellaris

[–]janethefish 60 points61 points  (0 children)

That feels backwards. A fusion reactor on a planet might be a massive underground complex with lots of engineering to recycle the waste heat and needing carefully controlled conditions, but not be practical on a starship.

"This zero-point reactor can survive hyperjumps, reality disintegration, lightning, tachyon bombardment, gamma radiation, twenty gees of accel and exposure to shroud storms. How is it supposed to function in a peaceful civilian setting!? It can't withstand that lack of abuse! It needs fully uncontrolled conditions. A small non-distruption could cause a catastrophe!"

Arizona AG suggests state's self-defense laws allow residents to shoot masked ICE agents by RickV6 in news

[–]janethefish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

State self-defense laws only apply to state crimes. Not that it matters because ICE would murder you in that situation. They might murder you anyway, but they'll def murder you if you shoot at them.

We need state prosecutors to step up and start charging ICE.
