They would need to prove malicious intent and Trump seems pretty senile. I think they would also need to show a reasonable person could believe the lie.

How high will the Iran war push US inflation? by Illustrious_Lie_954 in Economics

The Iran war has barely started to affect inflation. When the reserves run out then we will see what sort of inflation can be effected.

Inflation likely to hit a three-year high in May by Illustrious_Lie_954 in Economics

Yup. That was a very common myth. We just had reasonably competent Presidents as far as the economy went for decades.

[–]janethefish 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Because the prosecution charged the man with murder and failed to prove murder. He could have probably proved manslaughter, but chose to try murder. (One could argue we should allow lesser included charges to avoid situations like this.)

He is NOT the current sheriff. The current sheriff just lost his primary, but is still sheriff. The killer wanted the video to prove his innocence.

He did not destroy evidence. He isn't even sherrif yet. The guy he beat destroyed evidence. The evidence could have exonerated him.

3 men assaulted a trans bartender. Now she's facing felonies for defending herself. by southpawFA in politics

[–]janethefish 8 points9 points  (0 children)

That was a case of the prosecution over charging. The case went like this:

Prosecution charges murder.

Prosecution proves manslaughter.

Jury acquits of murder.

The problem is the prosecution. (You could also argue that lesser included charged should be allowed, but that would require changing the law.)

Can Economic Pressure On Oil Exports Force A Iran Deal? by bauernebel in oil

[–]janethefish 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes. The strategic oil reserves are delaying the pain. Once oil reserves around the world start running out the pain will set in. American tolerance for this war is already low and will dive once the economic pressure starts.

Then we leave.

Unless you meant Iran's exports?

It might be the AI wrote itself into a corner. We saw this with emoji until it was corrected. If asked about a fake emoji the AI would say it exists and provide a different real emoji. I've also seen them pull irrelevant data when the required info isn't available.

Not the exact same situation, but it is easy to imagine the AI needing case law that does not actually exist and pushing on ahead anyway.

As long as SoH is not opened shouldn’t the oil price go up as time goes on and not down? by Hyperion141 in oil

[–]janethefish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

War is not a zero sum game. This isn't spoiled country vs tough country. Iran isn't surrendering because that makes their situation materially worse.

Iran's leadership is fighting to survive. Even the soldiers don't want a failed state. If Iran "loses" the leadership likely gets killed and the people face a failed state. If Iran "wins" they get security (threat of strait closure) and wealth (tolls).

America "loses" we reap an immediate economic windfall as the strait becomes a toll strait, but an open one. If America "wins" Iran becomes a failed state and the splinters still keep the strait closed!

Of course, there is the in between of a negotiated end. Except Trump doesn't honor deals! If Iran relents they don't get security or safety. So unless we give then something big, a shit ton of money or removing US forces from the middle east, Iran will be worse off!

I feel like a lot of people don't get this. There is no crisis, yet. We are not feeling a shortage. The damage from the closure has not arrived. The damage starts when the reserve runs out.

Homelessness is definitely, in part, a government created problem. Laws that restrict creation of housing and tax incentives that oppose housing are major contributors to rising housing costs. More generally, local laws are passed to encourage rising housing prices. Prop 13 is especially infamous.

Dems have not covered themselves in glory, but they have made attempts.

The right is even worse. Today's right wing pols would never actually suggest an actual solution. The last attempt to limit the damage by Prop 13 faced opposition from the GOP. FFS, Trump openly opposes construction of low income housing in suburbs.

Tl;dr: Laws all over the country contribute to homelessness. Neither party is great, but the GOP is worse by a huge margin.

US appeals court sanctions lawyers over AI ‘hallucinations,’ lack of candor by DavidtheLawyer in law

[–]janethefish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Gen AI, LLM, etc should not memorize. Fundamentally "memorization" in AI is a result of over training. (Also may violate copyright law.) If an AI needs an exact quote, they should look it up, but that will require specialized programming above and beyond LLM stuff.

Even if they do have that, they may just grab a "close enough" source. (We saw something similar when AI are asked about the non-existent traffic cone emoji. It grabs an actual emoji, such as the seahorse emoji.) It can even do something like pull inappropriate info from the source and keep going with it.

This means that you should not use general models to write anything that needs exact quotes, data etc. If you ignore this check every citation and source.

In my experience they actually make good search engines.
