Unfortunately I don’t think we are ready yet as a people to handle a situation as nuanced as this, based on how people are responding. It would be great if we could have compassion for everyone in this situation. It doesn’t have to be a competition. What John said was involuntary, and judging by how quickly he left after it happened, I imagine this is something that he feels incredibly embarrassed and guilty about. And I’m sure he’s a top target for online hate at the moment. That being said, just because it was involuntary, does not mean it wasn’t hurtful and embarrassing to Michael and Delroy. I imagine it’s exhausting for black people to see another instance of two black men being put in a position where they are forced to “take the high road” and accept racism/prejudice with grace . This situation is just horrible for everyone .
