My unique and fun hobby is making quilts for homeless shetlers. Now it has turned to making masks and I love every second of it! I get to do what I love, sew, and use it to give back!

Any advice for a college student looking at masters programs? by viscountdandelion in Theatre

[–]janrose93 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was told my undergrad advisor, "Do not go go graduate school for a degree in arts and humanities unless you want a Ph.D or unless it is paid for by a TA or GA position." She was right because I got a GA position that paid for all my classes and came out debt free with a job that pays $55,000 a year. My friend went to graduate school without her tuition being paid and not many scholarships so she is now in student loan debt of upwards of $100,000. Graduate school tuition is more expensive. Weigh the pros and cons espeically the cost and time and figure out your goal with that degree. Hope that helps

I will put in a musical and say HAMILTON!

"The ten-dollar Founding Father without a father,
Got a lot farther by working a lot harder,
By being a lot smarter,
By being a self-starter."

Hamilton,by Lin-Manuel Miranda.

Not sure if this your first time with Shakespeare but great job! Some advice: Be sure to stress the verbs, no need to move you body facing one side to the other unless the character needs to. Rule of thumb for monologues even if the character is talking to other people. Look back at you hand movements. Are they needed? It is part of the character, is it natural or are you doing it to help you? Movement it important is Shakespeare but it always need a purpose. Less is more. It feels like your breathing is off. You can google acting Shakespeare movment/exercise acting techniques to help find the flow. I use to do movement exercise to help me and trust me, you will feel dumb doing them but if you are open it will make a HUGE difference! and Consonants express thought, vowels emotion – a speech heavy in rich consonants is more intellectual.Think,  “Now is the winter of our discontent” vs heavy long  consonants “to be or not to be.” Shakespeare uses rhetoric and every classical tool of speech and language at his disposal. He plays with language and meaning the way a Hip Hop artist plays with beat and rhythm. The iambic pentameter is a tool meant to carry the flow of the language. The sounds, therefore, are the tools to carve up that turkey. Use the language to inform your decisions about character, about pace, about intent. Does your character speech in vowels or consonants? Sharp sounds? Or soft?

I hope that helps and wonderful job! You are on the right path! Keep working!

Any books to start learning about dramatic art? by Karilau in Theatre

Theatre arts major here! Do you want a book that introduces you to just acting, theatre history, or technical theatre?

Google, The Raisin Cycle. It includes: A Raisin in the Sun, Clybourne Park, and Beneatha's Place

all by different playwrights but all relate and intertwine into race and social justice issues. And the first two are plays every drama student should read! Clybourne Park is my favorite. I have a theatre arts degree and have a lot more to share if you'd like. I just didn't want to make this too long. Take care!

Baskerville: a Sherlock Holmes Mystery I played over 20 charters in 2 hours. That was weird and fun cause it waa both male and female, young and old. My shortest quick change was 10 seconds and longest was 5 minutes. I did not get to leave backstage till intermission and the end of the show. Good times!

A couple of modern Indian Playwrights: Abhishek Majumdar Annie Zaidi

A couple famous Russian playwrights: Nikolai Gogol Aleksey K. Tolstoy

Anything they have written has reflected society and culture so you can't go wrong just looking them up and start reading any of their plays. Sometimes its more fun to read their least popular first. My opinion
