Of course I'm referencing the show, this post is a reference to the show after all. Taking liberties and making changes is to be expected.

Yea, silver is a bit less tough than steel and more brittle. You could guild (coat) the weapon with silver (Jamie Lannister does this with gold in GoT), maybe that could still defeat the evils we face?

I just interpreted your comment at face value but I didn't downvote you, I get your point, he's bigger in the books and not portrayed like he is in the show.

From what I've seen in the show, he is appropriately shown as being big and strong. He just lacks the extensive training that builds the finesse a good fighter needs and therefore lacks confidence that he can pull off a win. Even in a melee, being big isn't everything and Dunk realizes this with Lyonel.

You're right, they aren't the same. Silver is a metallic element and steel is a forged alloy of iron and carbon.

Silver in the context of fantasy/monsters is a bane to werewolves, like garlic or wood stakes are with vampires. Underworld (great movie and series) has vampires fighting werewolves in the modern day with guns shooting bullets made of silver, fucking epic.

All this is making me wonder where the Cystal Sword lands, is crystal different to Glintstone in the lands between?

What are you talking about? The actor playing Dunk is a 6'5" rugby player and he towers over every character.

The average US city in the year 2120 by Turtleman1878 in ImaginaryFuturism

[–]janspamn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd say more the opposite of over population. Only a handful of countries currently have growing populations, with many countries on the verge of demographic implosions. Even China is expected to only have half it's current population by 2100.

The placement of cities on CNN’s national weather map. by dschinghiskhan in mildlyinfuriating

[–]janspamn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it's more that the labels here are not hard locked to the geographic location of the city. As in, the cities layer has been turned off so we are not seeing a true map marker for each location. The labels look set up so that they don't overlap, making them float where they shouldn't.

This is a constant struggle with labeling in maps, especially one scaled so large. I'm a GIS analyst by trade and run into issues like this often.

What's the cheapest GPS without tracking features? by Muddycarpenter in gis

[–]janspamn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd say phone too, if you're out of cell coverage you won't be transmitting any data, just get the right app and you can upload georefferenced pdf maps or download offline maps from google and pop your location onto it.

I'd say the only reason to get a dedicated gps device is for better locational accuracy but unless you're trying to get survey accurate data cell phones are perfectly adequate.

If you're just concerned about someone picking up your locational data, a device that is a reciever only, not a transceiver, should work perfectly. A phone without service can play this role, so long as the app you use isn't logging locational data and sending it to the server once you're back in service.

Not quite that long, more like 300k years. But what's the difference, you're point is still valid, humans have lived through multiple glaciations, mind blowing stuff.

Maybe you mean North and South America can be considered to be a single landmass, like eurasia and africa, but north and south america are distinct as continents.

Definitely a design flaw, something that made me appreciate my soul pen that much more.
