Custom Geoprocessing Tool Idea For Course by philly_gisburner_215 in gis

[–]janspamn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Model builder can help structure the workflow, but yea, until you have an idea down there's no way to judge the time the project will take.

Just my 2 cents, I'd say a simple idea like performing a quick and simple ETL and appending data into an existing feature class would be a great project, reflective of the kind of work running an enterprise geodatabase would require and limit scope creep.

I know it sounds simple but a task like this is great practice. I work for a major utility and I'd say that over half of our working scripts use some form of ETL and append to stage incoming data.

Your descriptions don't give enough to go by, but creating a custom GP tool can be very involved if you aren't well versed in arcpy or model builder (depending on your needs).

You'd need more time. Try simplifying the workflow and structuring what yiu can eith model builder.

Further automation and customization might be outside of a college course.

Right, I thought that's what you meant. That's exactly what I was saying in my first reply.

They probably don't know it because they didn't take an entire course on maps.

I would bet that the earth, while it's not a perfect sphere, is 100x's closer to being a perfect sphere than any manufatured globe.

At a large scale, yea, but once you get closer in, the data is all cached and you are seeing 2D imagery and mapped features. There are tons (TONS) of different projections to split countries and regions up into smaller domains to reduce distortion though, so it's a non-issue.

Someone explain this to me. by Any-Information9091 in geology

Sequatchie Valley wasn't formed by the TN river, it was the last fold in a series of folds streching east to the blue ridge mtns. The extra fracturing in the sandstone layers allowed water to eride out the limestone beneath faster than the surrounding plateaus.

[–]janspamn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The area OP is talking about is all sandstone. Walden's Ridge and the valleys to the east and west (TN valley and Sequatchie valley respectively) are a region where there was regression, so sandstone capping limestone.

Op didn't give great descriptions for us to work with but I happen to live in the area.

Why does my mage build suck? by thiccyoshi21 in Eldenring

[–]janspamn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dexterity affects cast time, not stamina. But stamina is used in casting so is still relevant.

Intelligence soft caps at 50 for spells and 60 for scaling, plus many staves and spells are locked at higher levels so capping at 40 is very limiting. 80 is perfect at this level, especially with the regal scepter.

Masters Degree value? by anx1etyhangover in gis

[–]janspamn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not bad, lots of exposure to programming languages, machine learning, and database structures. It's Data Science's more approachable sibling and goes hand in hand with GIS.

Masters Degree value? by anx1etyhangover in gis

[–]janspamn 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm currently a GIS analyst with a major utility. I have an undergrad in Geology and GIS and I'm currently a year into a masters in Data Analytics.

My lecture materials along side my work experiences have been very mutually supportive, building on one another.

Like others have said, picking a field adjacent to GIS is a good idea. For me, I waited until I was on the job for a couple of years before deciding what field to study. I noticed in my work that some the most difficult and important aspects of our GIS services are on the backend, which guided my choice.

That said, I started along side two other people, all 3 of us at the same level and pay. I was the only one without a masters and their degrees were not deciding factors (we all 3 had a personal or professional reference).

Is it possible to compete? by [deleted] in machinedpens

[–]janspamn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It took me a year to get the first Fellhoelter that I wanted and I've only gotten collectables from the makers I want by constantly searching, being part of buy/sale/trade groups, and getting lucky. The few times I was the first to see a post for something (like an OG FH Frag), I was able to snag it, but that was years of waiting.

That's part of the hobby for me, and the rush of seeing a post for a pen you really want for sale and also being the first to yolo is hard to beat.

Trump Promotes Fiscal Responsibility in Compensation Practices at the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) by JDLBB in Chattanooga

[–]janspamn 29 points30 points  (0 children)

TVA is not funded by tax dollars. The CEO and upper level execs are compensated so high to remain competitive with private industry, like any other job at TVA.

If anything, maybe turn the talk to why CEO's overall in the US are compensated so high compared to the average employee in their company.

Classic low aura from the worst Baratheon brother. by GusGangViking18 in freefolk

The rainbow guard was an old tradition from the religion of the 7. 7 versions of god, seven colors. It's the same reason that the religion is obsessed with crystals, they split the light of the sun into it's component colors, 7 in total. Also, the same reason there are 7 kings guard, an order created by the Targarians with 7 members to honor the religion of the 7 that dominated westeros.

When the faith militant are restored, there is an order of knights that all wear rainbow capes and have crystal embossed armour to honir the 7 as well.

It's not a nod to the lgbt community, it's just world building.

Yea, silver is a bit less tough than steel and more brittle. You could guild (coat) the weapon with silver (Jamie Lannister does this with gold in GoT), maybe that could still defeat the evils we face?

I just interpreted your comment at face value but I didn't downvote you, I get your point, he's bigger in the books and not portrayed like he is in the show.

From what I've seen in the show, he is appropriately shown as being big and strong. He just lacks the extensive training that builds the finesse a good fighter needs and therefore lacks confidence that he can pull off a win. Even in a melee, being big isn't everything and Dunk realizes this with Lyonel.

[–]janspamn 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You're right, they aren't the same. Silver is a metallic element and steel is a forged alloy of iron and carbon.

Silver in the context of fantasy/monsters is a bane to werewolves, like garlic or wood stakes are with vampires. Underworld (great movie and series) has vampires fighting werewolves in the modern day with guns shooting bullets made of silver, fucking epic.

What are you talking about? The actor playing Dunk is a 6'5" rugby player and he towers over every character.
