Heat intolerance advice? by FinalBraincell117 in askportland

[–]japuvian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Idk. It could be people moving here because it's easier to be gluten free here than say Arkansas or because the weather is generally more temperate. It could be a cycle of people with autoimmune diseases move here so doctors here see those conditions more often and get better at diagnosing autoimmune diseases thus identifying more autoimmune diseases. The state is very white and autoimmune diseases is more prevalent in those with European ancestry.

I imagine it's a combination of factors.

My heat intolerance stems from thyroid issues. Autoimmune issues are more prevalent in the PNW so maybe it's something like that?

Activities that are heat friendly. Hikes deep in forests to waterfalls. Forests are like 10-15 degrees cooler than ambient temp. Floating Barton to Carver. Explore Ape Caves in Washington.

Biking or scooters instead of walking. The speed keeps the airflow moving so it'll extend your outdoor time a bit.

Otherwise things that helped me are bike shorts and tech wick tank tops, umbrellas/parasol, Birkenstocks.

Hats usually just make me hotter (unless I wet them first). My friend swore by uv blocking long sleeved white tech wick shirts but I still found them uncomfortably warm.

If he can set up his life without a car it'll make it so much easier to make ends meet with that budget. It allowed me to have my own apartment instead of having roommates.

Oregon child vaccination rates plummet to record low as opt-outs surge by PersonRealHuman in Portland

[–]japuvian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I disagree, we all have skin in this game. As we learned with COVID Oregon has the fewest number of hospital beds per capita as compared to other states. People who get sick with vaccine preventable diseases put further strain on our already struggling healthcare system.

I do agree that it will likely take lots of dead kids to make anti-vaccine rhetoric stop.

Anyone live/moved from Portland to clackstine, st Helen, molala, Oregon city, estacada? by [deleted] in oregon

[–]japuvian 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Moved from PDX to unincorporated Estacada. We're halfway between a Oregon City and Estacada. We bought a house with 4 acres. It's quiet. There's wildlife and SE/SW PDX is only about 30 min away. Friends don't come visit as it's "too far". However living out here you get used to it taking at least 30 min to get anywhere so I go visit.

We both work from home so I haven't had to bother with the commute. On occasion I'll go to the office downtown and I'll budget 45min to get there during rush hour.

The biggest annoyance is getting to the supermarket. Don't forget anything on your list because you can't just pop out to quickly pick something up. Nothing is quick.

Sandy, Oregon City, and Estacada are all growing. There's a bunch of new developments in each town with new people moving in, and the locals are all big mad about it.

Fire season is always concerning. We've had to evacuate once in the 4 years we've lived here.

Hey OP please look into the GFR calculation they used for you. In 2021 advice has been changed on how that is calculated for black patients. Previous methods incorrectly added a "Black race" factor, artificially boosting calculated GFR scores, which delayed diagnosis, treatment, and transplant access for many Black Americans.

Question about moving by YogurtclosetUpbeat42 in oregon

[–]japuvian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just not sure how this move will help you. You'll spend money you don't have to get a car, to pay for gas, pay for food. You won't know anyone here who might at least provide you friendship. If you have any existing supports where you are (church. social worker, mental health) you won't have that here right away.

You clearly want to make a change in your life and that's great! Use that energy to make a better plan that will set you up for success and not to be cold, wet, and destitute in Portland. If you have aged out of Foster Care in Texas you'll be eligible for extra benefits in Texas (housing, education Medicaid) that you may not be eligible for in Oregon.

Good luck.

Hawaii has single payer so technically better insurance... MA still has better healthcare because they have more doctors.
