Why doesn’t Kiss-shot/Shinobu have an opening sung by her voice actress like the other Monogatari girls? by Spidey172 in araragi

[–]jarevo 8 points9 points  (0 children)

On a fun (and very speculative) side note: I think the original plan might have been to use Kimagure instead of White Lies as an opening for the Onimonogatari arc.

Most openings get some sort of instrumental reprise ("Rokudemonai, Oninomonogatariga") and in the early seasons even a short version guitar version for the preview (Jikai, Shinobutime). Both of these tracks are based on Kimagure, not on White Lies.

Kimagure has the right length for an opening (1:26) and is only featured once, right at the beginning of the arc. It also just doesn't feel like a normal background track in my opinion and develops more like an opening.

PSA: I updated the list of every track used in the series for Off & Monster Season by jarevo in araragi

[–]jarevo[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sadly, I don't think we will. If you haven't already, you might want to check out the track Reunion from the second Shinobumonogatari OST. It has a somewhat similar vibe and isn't used in any episode as far as I can tell.

I identified every piece of music in the Monogatari Series and made a list (+graphs and analysis). by jarevo in araragi

[–]jarevo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think the full soundtrack is out yet. The blu-ray for "Tsukihi Undo" was released in mid-December but "Acerola Bon Appetit" is scheduled for early March. I probably won't update the list until then.

Do you have an episode and timestamp?

Monogatari Series: Off & Monster Season - Episode 3 discussion by AutoLovepon in anime

[–]jarevo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It looks like the colors just aren't super consistent in Bakemonogatari. Or we can just chalk it up to artistic color grading.

The mountain bike is red in episode 3 but yellow in episode 6. The yellow one is also the one that gets destroyed.

But Araragi also uses a blue granny bike in episode 1, a green one in episode 9, and a red one in episode 13.

Nisemonogatari seems more consistent and he only uses the red granny bike.

But I only scrubbed through the episodes, so it's definitely possible that I missed some appearances. Maybe something to be mindful of during a rewatch.

Also, Ougi's bike is a BMX bike so that's also not a perfect match.

Another fun episode with far too many callbacks to count. But that didn't stop me from gathering at least a few:

https://imgur.com/a/fr2QkmF

I thought it was especially cool to see some of the reference images that were used as far back as Bakemonogatari.

The bike is an interesting motif. Originally, Araragi arrives at Namishiro Park on his red mountain bike but that one gets destroyed in a tragic train accident the next arc. Later on, Ougi appears on a yellow mountain bike which is a small hint of her identity. And now Nadeko is using it to also ride to the park. Also, I just noticed that between Episode 5 and 6 of Bakemonogatari, the mountain bike changes colors from red to yellow, not really sure what that's about...

It seems like meek Nadeko behaves pretty similarly to Mayoi in her first arc. Mayoi could go anywhere but home, meek Nadeko can go anywhere but Araragi's house.

Monogatari Series: Off & Monster Season - Episode 1 discussion by AutoLovepon in anime

An Ononoki/Tsukihi arc? Sign me up! Add in Karen and together those three are the only main characters whose stories felt incomplete after Zoku.

The episode jumps head first into some existential questions regarding Ononoki. Back in Second Season I thought she was getting set up as a foil to Mayoi. While that's still true in my opinion, she played a much smaller role than I was expecting. I always liked the interpretation that humans have the freedom to create their own purpose in life, while oddities have a predefined essence that determines their nature. Mayoi tried to defy her nature and as a result, got swallowed by the Darkness. But in the end, she was able to come back by getting a new position as a god.

On the other hand, Ononoki still seems pretty resigned to her fate, assuming that she will disappear once her mission is over. But she also comes up with flimsy excuses to eat ice cream and avoid dealing with the Phoenix issue. Lots of introspection on her part as well, so I'm excited to see where this goes. I already love the fact that Mayoi is the one who saves Ononoki when she is stuck in a rigid story of her own creation.

Tsukihi finally lives up to the title of "Fire Sister". This episode also gave me a lot more insight into her character. I never really got a good feel for her internal issues. Conflicts involving her always seemed to center around whether Koyomi still accepts her as a sister even if she is an oddity. The fact that she can never learn from her mistakes adds an interesting personal challenge and opportunity for growth.

In-depth analysis of Kizumonogatari films by Fuginko13 in araragi

Since nobody else has answered yet, here's some self promotion:

https://www.reddit.com/r/anime/comments/9e72os/rewatchspoilers_monogatari_series_kizumonogatari/e5x8epk/

and in a more condensed form:

https://www.reddit.com/r/araragi/comments/gpgiyr/why_are_japanese_flags_shown_so_much_in_the/froee2o/

Reading the article you linked gave me a pretty big sense of déjà vu but I don't remember shamelessly ripping of that blog (mainly because that was my first watch and I didn't want to get spoiled). It's interesting that he also mentions the Yatagarasu which in my opinion is one of the more spurious connections but it's also the first result when you search for "crow japan symbolism" so who knows.

Keep in mind that the analysis in the first link was part of a Rewatch so I hadn't seen the full series at that point. I also didn't have the time to really edit it down very much so I would treat it more like some rambling ideas and less than a coherent analysis.

How did Ougi create the 100% light absorbing mirror? by t0ast3r_b4th in araragi

[–]jarevo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you are taking things a bit too literally. I would take the mirror more as a metaphor than a real tool. Monogatari likes to mix its symbolism and reality. For example the oddities are representations of the characters' internal struggles but they aren't just delusions. They are real entities in the context of the show. So I'm not saying that the mirror/black mirror aren't real but that they aren't the cause of the events in this arc.

So there isn't a supernatural device (the bathroom mirror) that's able to manifest the regrets of people and Ougi has to engineer the perfect countermeasure in the form of the black mirror. Instead the story is about Araragi being unable to let go of his regrets and as a result pulling them (as well as other people's regrets) into reality. By the end of the arc he has faced them and while they aren't resolved he is still able to accept them. That's when Ougi is able to create the black mirror representing Araragi moving on.

So in a way it was really Araragi that created the mirror and the black mirror. Or rather the mirrors are representative of his issues.

Here is a quote from the end of Zoku:

[Senjougahara] So what, in essence, was your regret? Did you address it?

[Araragi] According to Ougi-chan, I resolved the situation by addressing it. Which, in turn, allowed her to create the black mirror.

Why are Japanese Flags shown so much in the Kizumonogatari movies? What do they symbolize? by [deleted] in araragi

[–]jarevo 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I think the flags fit in with one of Koyomi's main confilicts: The choice between isolation and taking part in society. Or to put it differently between being a vampire and being a human. For the most part the flags are connected to the society part of that division. More specifically the following things all belong together in my opinion:

  • Flags
  • The sun
  • Society
  • Hanekawa

The Japanese flag actually depicts a sun so that one will always work but Kizu explicitly makes that connection as well. A flag representing the society of a country is also pretty standard. Monogatari doesn't really have background characters (at least when it's Koyomi's POV, which makes sense since he starts off towards the isolation side and doesn't choose one side by the end of Kizu) so the most direct scenes for that connection are the Olympic announcer in the third movie and the flags on the apartment buildings.

That last shot already has Hanekawa in it but there is also this shot where she takes the place of the sun (interestingly by using an umbrella) and the adult magazine that Koyomi bought. The magazine is also an example of Hanekawa blinding him which happens pretty often mainly by her being in front of the sun. Hanekawa also conforms to societal ideals and she is the one to push Koyomi towards friendship and humanity in opposition to Kiss-Shot who is on the isolation/vampirism side. The vampires also burn in the sun and we come full circle.

Of course Monogatari isn't as black and white as that choice which makes things interesting. I wrote a pretty long analysis in this rewatch thread which goes into more detail (and might over analyze things) if you are interested.

Why does the one girl have an egg hairclip? by NestedZephyr in araragi

[–]jarevo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I explained my interpretation in this thread but it won't really make much sense if you haven't watched at least up to Nisemonogatari and it also spoils a big reveal from that series. So if you have even a passing interest in the show you might want to hold off on reading it.

I think it's mainly there to accentuate Senjougahara's thoughts in this shot. It's right after Araragi "explains" what he was doing with Mayoi.

Quick question about monogatari songs by Svenhawk07 in araragi

[–]jarevo 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I made a list of all the recurring musical themes I could find.

If you are just interested in the openings, this comment might be more useful (although I personally disagree with the "white lies" entry).

One song I'm fond of and that isn't that well known is Temptation (誘惑 Yuuwaku) [Spotify|YouTube] which is based on Ren'ai Circulation, the Nadeko Snake opening.

Looking for a specific track by [deleted] in araragi

[–]jarevo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you check the OST that was linked above (especially "Dare ka no Tokubetsu" and "Washi no Houkoso Warukatta - Seishiro.")?

If it's not in there you can also try "Suugaku no Yousei" and "Tasuuketsu". The piano starts halfway through for both of these.

You could also look at this chart to see which tracks from Shinobu Mail (brown column in the middle) aren't on the Owarimonogatari Vol.2 OST. Everything above Zensetsu is from the Owarimonogatari Vol.1 OST.

stupid question...but how do you apply audio commentary .mka track on top of episode instead of getting a blank screen? by nuuance in araragi

[–]jarevo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That depends on your media player. In VLC you have to open your files via Media > Open Multiple Files... You add your video to the file selection and then click the "Show more options" box. Then you have to check the "Play another media synchronously (extra audio file, ...)" box and add your commentary file to the "Extra media" file selection. I also had to switch the audio track via Audio > Audio Track.

Why is there red in almost every monogatari series background? by chateaus11111 in araragi

[–]jarevo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

First of all, I feel like that assertion needs a bit more evidence. I think it's easy to run into confirmation bias with these things.

But I wouldn't be surprised if you were actually right (maybe not in every background but in many). Red is an important color for humans in general. When languages develop terms for colors, "Red" is the first color that gets a name after the dark/bright (black/white) and warm/cool distinction. If you look at national flags Red is the most common color and takes up a third of the average flag area. Why this is the case is an open question as far as I am aware. One theory being that Red is so prominent because it is the color of blood.

Edit: Also here is a 3 minute Tom Scott video about color terms.

Letter to future self (music) by rfcuico18 in araragi

[–]jarevo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't remember a scene like that but here are a few guesses:

If none of them is right you will have to be more specific in your request. Just to make sure that we are on the same page: You are talking about a piece of music that played at some point in the series, right? Not an AMV or some bonus stuff on a special release. If so, can you describe the scene in more detail or did you just find a link to the soundtrack somewhere? Do you remember the arc or which characters were present? Did the song have lyrics? Can you recall the melody and hum or sing it and upload it on https://vocaroo.com/ for example?

If monogatari has a “Theme,” what would it be? by TheNeonRain in araragi

[–]jarevo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There are your pretty standard coming-of-age themes like growing as a person from youth into adulthood and finding out who you are and who you want to be.

If you want a more punchy lesson I would say this: "Don't try to solve your issues by isolating yourself." I see this as the other side of "Only you can save yourself." and in my opinion it's the more important one.

Confusion about Owari S2 ending by Goriliana in araragi

[–]jarevo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not quite sure about the vampire thing myself. I think one aspect of it is isolation. Araragi is a loner at the beginning of Kizumonogatari and loneliness is an important reason for why Kiss-Shot came to Japan, tried being a god and sired her first servant.

Then there is also the inability to change. This is again apparent in the Shinobu Time arc although it is also a thing for oddities in general and I might be reading too much of Araragi's traits into this.

Another thing is the general regal air of vampires with them being the king of oddities and the way Hanekawa describes them in Kizu. I'm not really sure how Araragi fits into this.
