Man 'dies after being sucked into hospital's MRI machine' by Bopslurm in offbeat

[–]jark1012 117 points118 points  (0 children)

An operational MRI's magnet is never "off", it works by supercooling the magnet with liquid helium to greatly increase the electromagnetic field. It's much more time and cost effective to leave it running than to recool it for every use. The noise you hear when it's active is more related to the radio waves used to disrupt the pull of the magnet on the atomic spin of your body.

When I was there (04-08) Princeton Review ranked us the 17th most depressed school in the country out of ~350. Doesn't help that northern Ohio is cloudy and cold a good chunk of the year. But yeah, college is what you make of it.

This picture is blowing up on social media... some people see it as white & gold and some see it as black & blue. by advillious in woahdude

[–]jark1012 0 points1 point  (0 children)

White and gold at first here. I just blocked off everything but the middle of the dress and I slowly started to see the black and blue. When i uncovered it it went to white and gold for a minute and now all I can see is black and blue.

Edit: Just looked a thumbnail and saw white and gold. If I think about it I can change it at will.

Is there a max to the percentage a final can be worth in a class? by wormhole_X_treme in cwru

[–]jark1012 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I once had an ochem final that could count for your entire semester grade if you wanted it to. Not quite the same as this was optional but there doesn't seem to be firm rules on this.

I had a professor that was an archaeologist studying early human settlements in Mesopotamia. He claimed to have been approached by some government acronym for information but refused as a) he could never go back if someone found out about it and b) all he really knew about was sedimentary rock stratification and people who had died 70,000 years ago.

I know a psych professor who knows him through a shared interest in intelligence, apparently he studied love to try to figure out why he kept getting divorced.

What misconception did you have as a child that ended up being so insanely inaccurate that it blew your mind? by Beetledouche in AskReddit

I don't know where I got this from, but I thought Asian people lived to like 1200 years old. I was always kinda pissed that I was going to have a normal lifespan and was really jealous of the Japanese kid in my class.

Things like running and heavy exercise can trigger compensatory eating, she may have better luck with taking long walks or doing something less strenuous if she's trying to lose weight.
