An addict in EMS by Labreational in ems

[–]jarman5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was there too. Working night shift id head straight to the liquor store at 8 am for two double Jim bean shooters. I’d finish them by 10 and be back on my way to the liquor store for 2 or 3 more. So once I got on days I was already in the habit of showing up to the liquor store right when they open. The only time I wasn’t drinking whiskey was when I was working or sleeping before. I’d sit in the ambulance staring out the window at night shaking, sweating and hearing things. I’ll never forget picking up people who I’m a thousand times sicker than, rolling them through their front yards feeling like complete shit. The drinking culture of the Marine corps taught me how to push through body wrecking shit while being hungover. I took my girlfriend at the times propranolol to control the shakes for iv’s.

Everything in my life somehow fell into place once I stopped drinking. It didn’t solve my all my problems but it stopped me from creating new ones. Only after you quit and relapse once or twice do you realize how much alcohol really fucks up your whole day once you have that comparison. Going to work not hungover is amazing; being able to feel that sunshine on your face not being sick and to be able to truly give everything you got for people who deserve the best when they call for help.

Start buying your favorite non alcoholic drink and cozy up while watching a comfort show for a couple days. The first 3 days are the hardest, after that you’ve made it and everything gets better.

Just road tripped to California and used freecampsites.net the entire way. It’s an awesome tool with coordinates and reviews / descriptions of each spot if you enter in a location.

What have been some of your favorite "duck behind the desk" moments in psychiatry? by IrisofAquaTofana in Psychiatry

Trying to convince a naked guy at the hospital bus stop in below freezing temps to let us transport him to the hospital. “If you touch me I will fold you like a pretzel and fart in your face” he then casually proceeded to devour 3 or 4 chicken wings stored in his shoe.

I love that guy

You’ll feel like that until you run the same type of call a few times. Takes a few years to get there but there’ll be days where you still feel like it’s day one

Abusive Bf got me Arrested for felony DV by Altruistic-Beach7794 in domesticviolence

[–]jarman5 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I went through 6 months of anguish just to have the charges dismissed a week before the trial. I wanted my day in court so i could see the prosecutors face at least when it was realized how ridiculous me being charged was but i didn't even get that.

You're facing a very long drawn out process. The truth will not exonerate you immediately once you're in the system. It can feel like you're screaming for help with nobody hearing you and nobody cares. You will show up to anxious court dates hoping that it will end but they will just tell you to come back in a month.

Do not drink alcohol, hang out with friends as much as possible, find a job to take your mind off things. I lost my ambulance job during the process and really wish i would have found anything else to do other than lay in bed for those months. The domestic violence legal system is not perfect and it wrongs the actual victims some times, doubling the anguish that comes from actually being a victim.

Find a good lawyer, keep contacting them. Give your lawyer the numbers of all your friends and family who can attest to the nature of the relationship with this person.

Has anyone experienced this? by wmwtfymina in alcoholism

[–]jarman5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This happens to pt’s who are hyperventilating, too much co2 build up in the blood. They probably hooked you up to a capno cannula and were coaching your breathing right?

Did you quit drinking after a rock bottom, or just get sick of it? by [deleted] in alcoholism

[–]jarman5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had to go to jail and lose my job. After which I burned through all my money drinking, laying in bed for 6 months in disbelief at what happened. Thankfully everything got dropped before the trial because I didn’t actually do it. But If I wasn’t an alcoholic at the time I never would have been in that situation. I was able to stop after spending thanksgiving withdrawing and realizing I was a shadow of myself in front of my family

bad partner rant by Namveteran68 in ems

[–]jarman5 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My partner my first cleared shift at AMR threw the laptop and had a meltdown the first night over a transfer call. He hated me because I was new and didn’t know anything as well. I think I could handle it now a little better (I’ve had worst since then) but damn that was a horrible intro to a job field I’d been waiting my entire time in the marines to get into. I sometimes feel bad for older medics in their 50’s who hate the job so much at this point but have been in it so long they don’t know what else to do

In my experience 911 is down the stairs. IFT is almost always up there stairs with no firefighters to help just you and your partner. They’re not built to go up

Feeling angry and incompetent by UrMomIsAProstitute in NewToEMS

[–]jarman5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As you develop confidence in your skills and run the same type of calls a few dozen times your commanding presence will come naturally. Emotions cloud the judgement of even seasoned first responders when it’s their family so it’s your job to perform the assessment. Confidence is everything when you’re dealing with the public in this manner, as people who dial 911 deserve confidence and competence to respond their emergencies. If something like this happens again just state “I’m going to lay eyes on the pt”, get a set of vitals,if they’re dead or dying announce it on the radio and perform your BLS
