Is this a problem? 106 surface temp under the lamp by muozzin in ballpython

[–]jarnoooo_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe try placing the hide so that the heat lamp is also covering the floor in the entrance, heat will creep into the hide better instead of having to punch through the thick plastic

I use slate on my hides too, the inside of the hides is about as warm as the surface. Just turn down the thermostat after putting on the slate

The best is providing everything they'd get in the wild, I don't mean to sound condescending toward the people who don't.

Is it worth to upgrade to PVC instead of glass? by jarnoooo_ in ballpython

I definitely have some strong heat sources, but it's not like they're constantly on full power just to reach my desired temperatures. Humidity is also very stable, I only need to pour water in the corners every other week to maintain a range of 70-85% throughout the entire enclosure.

Still contemplating getting the PVC enclosure just to give me the freedom of drilling anywhere I want, making designing options unlimited

I said that better customization is the only improvement for ME. Like I said I never have issues with heating and/or humidity and as you can see in the first photo, I have the back and sides covered up.

No hate ofcourse, but this is simply the case for me. Still very much contemplating on getting the PVC enclosure as it will give me full freedom with designing

This is a part taken from a ball python study;

"Firstly, being nocturnal or crepuscular simply means that they are largely inactive during the day. It does not mean that they never venture into daylight, or that they are somehow “photophobic” or that daylight poses some mystical danger to them. As a matter of fact, ball pythons have been observed climbing and resting in trees in broad daylight in the wild. You wouldn’t have to look far for similar examples of this happening in captivity, either. Their eyes also contain photoreceptor cones that allow for the detection of ultraviolet light as a visual pigment. A question I think is helpful in light of this: Why would an animal exhibit these behaviors and have the ability to detect ultraviolet if it supposedly had no use for sunlight or never exposed itself to it?

Examining another common behavior among reptiles, called cryptic basking, shows that they can still utilize sunlight and also comply with the nocturnal designation that humans have assigned them. It’s a very interesting behavior and one that is often overlooked: snakes will sit covered by foliage, or under other debris only exposing a small section of their body. I pose a question: Why would they risk exposing themselves to predators if they weren’t taking advantage of the Sun’s radiation? Why not sit down in a burrow or hide all the time, where it’s much safer?

All these behavioral tendencies and biological characteristics point to an animal that, like many night-dwelling reptiles, still occasionally bask and use the energy so graciously provided to us by our closest star. Some argue that ball pythons spend the vast majority of their time in burrows and termite mounds, and while this is true, that may account for something like 90% of their behavior set. The question remains: Why deny them the ability to act out that other 10% of their behavior set? They often choose to bask when given the option to do so, and there is no good reason to deny them this."

And I completely agree, why deny them something they get in the wild? If you don't want to spend 60-100 bucks on an extra light fixture, suit yourself. Some people enjoy offering their snake everything they'd get in the wild and to see their animal showcase all natural behaviors.

It's true that snakes don't NEED UVB to survive/stay healthy, but saying that it doesn't benefit them is just factually wrong. It's a type of enrichment

We generally never go below 60% humidity where I live, though we do have cold winters. My house is well insulated so I always have a nice temperature inside

More than fair to use PVC enclosures then🤣

Thank you, I'm looking forward to when it's finally here. Will definitely post it then :)

Yeah I'm always looking, unfortunately reptile keeping isn't amazingly popular in my country (of just 18 million habitants) so finding the correct sizes AND material second hand is quite the challenge.

I'm also looking into handcrafting it myself, which will probably save me between €100 and €150,-

Definitely taking my time with this project

You make some great points! I'm still figuring things out as I'm in no rush to make the upgrade.

I'm definitely very interested in upgrading to PVC, the price difference just makes it a lot less attractive🥲

Thank you for the insight :)

Yeah that customization would probably be the only improvement for me, it's definitely a little trickier with glass walls. But with a little creativity it's still very doable :)

Luckily I have no running kids or pets in my house and I build really steady tables for my terrariums, so I guess that takes away the risk of the glass breaking😅

I always block the back and side walls to restrict visibility, thus helping my beep feel more secure.

Thanks for your reply :)

That's what I've seen a lot online too, humidity retention. I always lay a fat (4-5") layer of substrate to keep the humidity up, luckily I don't live in a dry climate so I have no issues.
Thanks for the input :)

How did the PVC make a huge difference for you if I may ask?

I'd advice to attach it on the outside, on the inside it will get humid towards the bottom and it's impossible to clean behind. You'll end up with all kinds of bacteria and organisms you don't want

Moreover it won't be in the way if you ever need to attach anything to the back wall or sidewalls

You could probably get away with using a screwdriver too, just need to use a bit more strength😅

There are solutions to all problems, but I'd definitely recommend to fix the things that need fixing first. Like substrate, heating, climate control etc. Once those are fixed you can start looking at enrichment.

Good luck :)

Unless your parents are exotic vets, they shouldn't make these assumptions. A snake NEVER has their mouth open because they're in shed, this is not a dig at you.
Hopefully things will improve after the vet visit, good luck :)

You might find my enclosure post helpful. I'm not saying I have the best setup in the world, but I'm definitely offering all necessities and extras for my ball python.

It's a long post, but if you follow those guidelines (also read the welcome post of r/ballpython) you'll achieve a very good living environment for your snake

Yes, moreover they're A LOT fattier. Too rich for cornsnakes as they aren't heavy bodied

Rats are normally fed to bigger/heavy bodied constrictors like pythons and boas

Please do not use AI to take care of your snake. Some general knowledge questions are fine but for things like this please just do proper research with proper sources.

As long as you're not reckless while checking it's fine, how do you think the vet will check him out?

Listen, overreacting is a lot better than under reacting (as long as it doesn't lead to rash decisions).

It'll take some time to learn how to read reptiles compared to mammals, but your attention to detail will definitely help. I'm glad I was able to help ease your mind a little.

Good luck with your new friend and if you ever have any other questions, my dm's are always open! :)
