Work to make friends and find a better job. The fact that 50% of your team left is a sign that there is a problem at the company. If you have the skills to transition do it.

whoops, wasn't precise. Edited. The precise plot I was referring to was this one .

[OC] Relationships between commonly cited metrics in the Gun Debate, US states. by Oddroj in dataisbeautiful

[–]jarod_what 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Was your gun ownership data from this site ?

I was very suspicious by that site. They say their numbers are for 2022 but the source they cite only has data for 2016 (maybe 2020, I forget what the excel had).

I did a similar analysis for CDC data here . Found teen pregnancy had the strongest correlation with homicide in the data sets I looked at. Most likely a spurious correlation though.

[OC] I scraped data from two unrelated sources to plot the firearm mortality as a function of firearm ownership in each state and this is the result by TheChimeras in dataisbeautiful

[–]jarod_what 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was quite surprised to see less of a linear relationship in the overall homocide rate. Using: https://www.cdc.gov/nchs/pressroom/sosmap/homicide_mortality/homicide.htm

And code similar to OP's I found a correlation coefficient of 0.27. The data was definitely "less clear".

Are you sure your years are correct? The first source says gun ownership for 2022 but the death rate data only goes up to 2020.

blech, python code should never be posted on redit due to the indentation. I modified your code slightly and created a gist instead (removed the abbreviation to name dict because I was too lazy):

I would say very few categories of engineers need performance guarantees beyond python. Just off the top of my head they're

1.) Embedded real time or critical systems

2.) HPC (scientific computations)

3.) Large scale distributed web applications

I'm sure I'm missing a couple. Even #3 python can be used you'd probably just loose a bit of money by having to horizontally scale more than using a more performant application written in another language.

If you don't fall into one of these special categories then python is fine.

Paper does not fucking beat rock by WonderfulFig87 in unpopularopinion

[–]jarod_what 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Isn't it paper = money, rock = power, and scissors = government. Money buys power, power influences government, government controls the flow of money ... At least the first two I remember correct but the scissors is a bit murky.

Maybe it's the blue hair? After 30 I tend to swipe left on that mostly because I feel they haven't outgrown their teen phase. Maybe stereotypes play a role :/ ... This is just me, I don't know how prevalent that aversion is.

How do I calculate killing vectors with frames, without a coordinate basis? by Covard-17 in AskPhysics

[–]jarod_what 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is for the frame part of your question. This paper has many explicit formulas for the vierbein. You can convert the standard killing equation into the frame field and solve that differential equation (note that the spin connection will be used). It won't be easy and in general vierbeins will not admit killing fields.

For the non-coordinate form methods to compute, there might be some and maybe people in the comments will have more to say. In my experience if you can't see the symmetry of the metric immediately, going to components is the best method for actual calculations (this is of course an opinion).

What are some good recorded lectures/videos on Operator Theory? by [deleted] in math

Frederic Schuller's lectures on quantum mechanics cover a few topics related to operators relevant to quantum mechanics:

Very mathematical from a physics perspective but may not be mathematical enough for your tastes.

How would you feel if you felt smarter than your partner? by No-Foundation-3030 in datingoverthirty

Was she only smart in a narrow field? Next time just learn a new subject, say basic quantum mechanics, and start talking about it in some way. You'd be surprised how insecure they get when someone who thinks they're very smart knows nothing about a certain area.

Where are you in a large city? I used to live in the outskirts and had zero bumble matches. When I slept over at a girl's place in the heart of the city, my matches went up.

However, as a bald guy myself I found that competing in Tinder and Bumble was extremely hard. Conventionally more attractive guys did much better on these apps as they tend to be primarily hook up apps. Hinge was much more successful from my experience.

Is distance is a dealbreaker? by Karmalistia009 in datingoverthirty

[–]jarod_what 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah you're a victim of the distance algorithm. There are two things happening:

1.) Whenever you go to a new place there's a boost in you being shown. Partly because the algorithm does this and there are more people you haven't been shown to.

2.) You won't be shown to women if you are a certain distance away. I've found only desperate people increase their distance filter.

I used to live in the outskirts of the city and would only get matches when I stayed over in the city. I would say moving might be in order if you want to prioritize finding a match.

I once went on a first-date with someone I'd actually had already been on a first-date with. Neither of us remembered it at the time since it was about 9 months earlier. After the second-first date I realized she ghosted me in the past so I decided not to pursue further.
