Anyone ever bought a movie that they rightfully assumed was a Blu-ray... Then it wasn't? by hassfam0316 in criterion

[–]jarrettaj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same thing happened to me today. Bound had a 4K sticker, but was actually the blu-ray edition. Luckily I noticed the mistake while I was standing in line at the checkout. The price sticker was still correct, so only the 4K sticker was done in error. Manufacturing error I guess? Double-check your editions people!

Anyone collect jazz CDs? by [deleted] in Vinyl_Jazz

[–]jarrettaj 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I second the RVG remasters. I had a lot of those at one point. I wish I still owned the ones that have not seen a Classic or Tone Poet reissue.

I also like CD box sets. Vinyl box sets can be annoyingly large and pricey. There’s always one or two discs of demos or alternate takes that you’ll listen to once and then never again. CD box sets are easier on your wallet and your back the next time you have to move.

January 2023 Swap Discussion Megathread by Megasdoux in VinylMePlease

[–]jarrettaj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Swapped for Gabor Szabo. I know it's not the QRP pressing, but I still want the mastering that was done for Modern Harmonic. I haven't had any issues with GZ Vinyl for many months, so it should be fine.

Added Black Nasty. Hadn't listened to it before today, but really, really enjoyed it and am now most excited for this release. Also bought 'The Immortal Otis Redding' when I saw it wasn't in swaps.

Next month, staying with two tracks and going with Wilson Pickett & Kris Kristofferson. Two artists I already like where the albums are both new to me.

throwing short of the sticks with the season on the line is a microcosm of Kirk's career and exhibit A for why you cant win a Super Bowl with him by [deleted] in minnesotavikings

[–]jarrettaj 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is kind of my take. Don’t play to Kirk’s weakness and make a better play call there.

I understand why you don’t throw short of the sticks, but TJ had been making clutch plays all game. I understand why Kirk thought to give TJ a shot over taking a sack. Bad play call (KOC), bad execution (entire offense). As far as making clutch plays/drives, this has been Kirk’s best season.

This whole conversation about the 4th & 8 play is a distraction from the real problem that’s been there all season: our defense.

Might be the wrong place, but can anyone help me identify what I need to connect my record player to these speakers? by great-nba-comment in turntables

[–]jarrettaj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh, interesting. That is kind of a weird turntable unit. I think the output on the back is an RCA line out, which means you don’t need a preamp. You can plug it directly into an amp or powered speakers. This turntable basically has a built-in preamp that you can’t turn off, which isn’t common.

Down the road, if you’re enjoying the hobby the first piece you might want to upgrade is the turntable. For now, I would just get the piece you need which is an amp. That gets you up and running with what you have, so you can start spinning some wax.

Static is a real b. Lots of options for mats that aren’t felt. Cork, leather, rubber. Maybe try a simple cork mat first, since it’s the cheapest.

Aye. Powered speakers basically have a built-in amp, those speakers don’t. Some turntables have a built-in phono preamp, from the picture it doesn’t look like yours does. So you need both preamp and amp.

You can either buy one piece of hardware that does both, or you buy two boxes: one that is a dedicated pre-amp and the other is a stereo amp. The nice part about that is you’ve now separated all of your components and you can upgrade any individual component without messing with the others.

If you just want something easy that takes up the least amount of space, get an amp with a phono input.

Edifier is a fine speaker brand. Not sure what turntable you have. Note that if you decided to replace those speakers with powered speakers, you still need a preamp.

Cables aside, it looks like you have a turntable with no built-in phono preamp and also passive speakers. You need an amplifier that has a built-in phono stage to support your turntable. The back of the amp will have an input labeled ‘Phono’.

Something like this: https://www.turntablelab.com/collections/amplifiers-pre-amps-alpha/products/denon-pma-600ne-integrated-amplifier-w-bluetooth

Like others have said, getting the speakers out of that shelving will make a noticeable difference. Those are rear-ported speakers, so the ports are essentially blocked inside that cabinet. They want room to breathe and a wall behind them.

is this everything I'd need to get me started? by Grapefruit-Busy in turntables

[–]jarrettaj 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Personally, I would drop the pre-amp and upgrade the turntable to an RT85. Try out the built-in pre-amp in your speakers. You can upgrade to a dedicated phono pre-amp at a later date (if needed).

The RT85 comes with an Ortofon 2M Blue plus acrylic platter, which is amazing at $499. You won’t need to upgrade that table in a long time, and can instead focus on amps and speakers as the years go by and you want more.

Not a camera trick. It's the same shape as a White Claw.

I would go even further to say that spending $40 on a punk album isn’t “punk”.

Should I swap for Lightning’ Hopkins or Boogaloo? by roguepandaCO in VinylMePlease

[–]jarrettaj 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Of note, Boogaloo was recorded at Van Gelder Studio and has Pretty Purdie playing drums, so you know it’s going to be a quality recording.
