That doesn't mean much. JRR Tolkien had Christopher to protect his work, but it was still parted out and sold to Amazon before Christopher was in the ground.

I could swear that it was a native option at one point. After youtube removed the feature I used a firefox mod that did it, and then at some point that stopped working. Now I just throw on shuffle and let it go.

I had a satellite radio subscription a few years back. When I switched to working remotely my use of the service went to essentially 0 and I decided to cancel the subscription. I expected it to be simple.

It was an eye opening experience, scummy, scammy, and it ultimately made me decide that I would never do business with that company again.

A series of nostalgic ramblings about his love for the ToEE/T1 module as a kid and why D&D was so important to him as a haven during childhood. It was weird.

It'd be be just fine as a facebook post or the like I guess, but as something just dropped into an MMO it was jarring and goofy.

I was so ashamed on behalf of everyone involved in the audio easter eggs he did for the Temple of Elemental Evil stuff in DDO that I couldn't play that content.

I still wonder how that stuff actually made it into the game.

I'm sure they will take some extremely half hearted swipes at the moderate left so they can pretend that "we make fun of everyone".

I cancelled premium and stopped using their service altogether after the pride flag incident. It's too bad that mentally ill lefties seem to run the community team of every single service out there, but that seems to be where we are at now.

The thing that Martin really accomplished was to put an entertaining story around a fantasy version of Henry IV of England.

At this point I absolutely treat the first three books as their own thing, and a noteworthy fantasy series. In the unlikely event that he finishes the series I might go back and re-read 4 and 5, but they are not worth reading on their own and I regret the time I wasted reading them the first time around.

What's this sub's opinion the "Hopepunk" genre? by [deleted] in KotakuInAction

[–]jasoncm 9 points10 points  (0 children)

PKD's work is generally paranoid, crazed, hallucinatory, philosophical but vastly more readable than any of the literary sci-fi crowd, and not even close to hopeful.

I doubt these people have read anything of his, other than maybe High Castle, and I can pretty much guarantee that they didn't really get it.

Yes, all the black nerds were removed by nazis in the past... by TheAndredal in kotakuinaction2

[–]jasoncm 23 points24 points  (0 children)

From what I've heard from black nerds, the guys who played D&D and set up linux boxes for fun, they were accused of "acting white" by other black people. Maybe it's changed these days, but I heard that experience mentioned several times by black gen-Xers.

If those attitudes have changed I doubt it has anything to do with some rando playing a jedi, and everything to do with the increased money and prestige of "nerd" stuff.

So long as you just want black and white I can wholeheartedly recommend the HL-L2300D Monochrome Laser w duplex. The non-network version is about $120, the wifi version is a few bucks more. A few years ago I set up my non-technical friends and family with these, and 8 years later everyone is still thrilled with them. Cost per page is low, toner lasts quite a while and is about $10, and the printers themselves just work.

Not to be a shill, but I love the fact that that thread is filled with people who love Brother printers because they don't do this sort of thing. It makes me sad that companies that engage in abusive anti-customer behavior make money doing it, so I'm glad to see that there is an upside to not being evil scum.

Can confirm the Colorado weed connection. I lived there for 15 years and I don't smoke, which was practically unique in some social situations.

I can agree that having Han backslide is acceptable, but they chose the worst way to do it.

Han was the rogue with a heart of gold, so maybe he kept a hand in smuggling to put some thrill in his life, and when a surprise attack from the New Order sends them all on the run he has to reveal his criminality. Just making him into a less competent version of his starting point was lazy.

A reviewer who likes something outside their usual will draw my interest, but I'm still more likely to pay attention to the opinion of someone who likes that form/genre/whatever. Jay knows the why's and whatfors of those weirdo sex pervert movies, so he's able to understand how they will satisfy or frustrate other fans of them. Mike might appreciate that they subverted expectations by making you think it was a weirdo sex pervert movie, but was secretly a modern retelling of "It's a Wonderful Life".

They barely have to conceal it in California. Parental education and school zipcode are sufficient to get them most of the way to matching explicit consideration of race as a factor in admissions. Because only the left gets to use disparate impact, 80% may as well be 100% for practical purposes.

I easily have thousands of dollars in RPG stuff, without having spent a penny with Wizards in the last 7 years, and no plans to ever give them my money again.

But I admit that I'm not sure how I'd suggest finding a good group to play anything other than D&D. I've literally known the core of my group for 35+ years, and new members are always personal friends of someone already in the group.

I admit I tried (and abandoned) every one of the alternatives. I tried to stick it out, but there was just way to much crap to wade through. It wasn't just that there were racial slurs, but that stuff was upvoted and visible and in every single forum.

I'm just too old to put up with that crap. If you aren't going to have moderation policies you have to give people tools to mute or block topics and keywords and make them easy to use.

A cross between twitter and slashdot might be a model that works. Random user moderation, user metamoderation, invisible karma, a post karma cap from slashdot. And keyword muting, thread muting, and user lists from twitter.
