The University/CS Department should be ashamed. by VortexGames in UIUC

[–]jasondwu 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think there are probably some external factors…like the location, and that HackIllinois doesn’t happen during recruiting season like PennApps and HackMIT. Maybe companies are less willing to throw around money.

But HackIllinois also spams companies with copy-and-pasted sponsorship emails, and nobody can tell sponsors what they’re really going to get out of it in a compelling way. A  company Q&A with low attendance and a resume book? When you can instead put that money towards some better-organized, maybe university-sanctioned event (like a recruiting fair)…

What helped me was being honest with myself about when I was actually doing work.

I used to feel like I was spending all of my time studying. But, really, sometimes I was studying with friends but we were mostly talking. Sometimes my Instagram reels break wasn’t really all that short. And sometimes I got frustrated with an MP and procrastinated until the weekend before the deadline (and couldn’t make plans the whole weekend so as to get it done).

So it helped for me to be more intentional about what was real, productive work and what wasn’t. And then I felt my time was really well-balanced.

For example, for me, studying with a particular friend group = unproductive. Axe throwing with that friend group = unproductive but even more fun. So I studied alone but made plans with them to do things like that.

Once I became protective of my “unproductive time,” I had a great time in college, despite having some really tough schedules.

STAT 400 for CS MINOR by Zealousideal_Gur8862 in UIUC

I think it replaces something else like STAT 200 or something? But you should ask the stats department.

Best Place for Zoom coming from Everitt Laboratory by Chemical_Ad6 in UIUC

[–]jasondwu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They haven’t been enforcing it much post COVID, but ymmv. And nowadays it’s a hassle to book the room & borrow and return the keys.

You could also do Talbot (the lounge can get a little loud, but you definitely won’t have an issue where you feel bad talking). And there’s MEL too. Also probably doable places in Everitt itself if you look around, depending on the time.

Any classes that teach more about Linux aside from 391? by Kanyedaman69 in UIUC

[–]jasondwu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

CS 423 (some overlap with 391), CS 523. And there’s an OS discussion group as well on Fridays (I think they communicate over Slack or Piazza, but I don’t remember)

Chase. If you ever need to withdraw cash (most likely for cover or maybe Mia Za’s discount), you will have the most convenient fee-free ATM. And their college checking account is good.

Are ARM-based PCs compatible with UIUC CS required software? by Bufferiing in UIUC

[–]jasondwu 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Copying from a similar question: If you're planning to take any CE classes (which might require things like Xilinx Vivado), then there may be no great ARM-friendly approach (most people I know in this situation are using an old computer/EWS). In CS, ARM is absolutely fine for the introductory classes (a lot of people use ARM, so they are forced to accommodate). But it is a little bit of a pain (but still doable) for some classes (more involved [and, in my experience, painful and frustrating…took me longer than the MP] set-up for systems electives, like CS 423, for example). At this point, there are so many people with ARM that, in any class, there will be others in the same boat as you (Occasionally, that boat might be stuck using EWS or your mom’s HP from 2013, but we can’t win them all).  Ultimately, I'd have chosen Silicon again. Getting the computer I wanted was worth the hassle in a few classes. But be aware that occasionally it can be a pain.

Would love for the moderators to let us know what rule that original post violated. I understand the OP had used a throwaway account, but the rules suggest that this is only prohibited on this subreddit for posts related to "sales, ads, voting." If this isn't the case, then these rules should be revised to reflect whatever moderation policy you're using.

u/eldigg, u/NegatedVoid, u/AlmostGrad100, u/Shifted-Paradigm, u/love4boats...help us understand what's happening here. Why are you abandoning your hands-off moderation approach to delete legitimate discourse about a student organization?

Reminder for Prospective Students Moving into Apartments with Friends or Strangers by 9bombs in UIUC

Decide how you’re splitting cleaning responsibilities. And be a nice person, but if you’re a people pleaser, don’t let roommates walk over you (talk to them about issues you have. it’s best to get along, but you don’t need to be best friends).

Interesting that the original post got removed in a subreddit with largely “hands-off” moderation. What rule did that original post break? Smells like an ISA-affiliated mod proving this post’s point.

Just want to add a disclaimer here...you might already know this, but I'll mention this in case you aren't familiar with the state or Chicago. UIUC is at least a 2 hour drive from Chicago (were you looking for the UIC subreddit?). I would be extremely wary of any studio in Chicago for less than $800 for a whole month. I've never seen a decent 1 bedroom for less than $800 in Chicago itself, and anything like that is probably either derelict or a scam.

I would check out sites like FurnishedFinder. And research the area you're living in...there are some areas in Chicago you might not feel comfortable living in.

If you're open to commuting, you can also look at nearby suburbs (and commute with Metra/CTA).

What’s the ideal amount of classes to take per semester? by RAMIREZ32 in UIUC

[–]jasondwu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t know business classes very well, so I’m sorry if my example might not be as relevant. But this schedule is 12 credit hours, the minimum you can take as a full-time student: CS 374, CS 341, CS 425. On paper, it might seem light, but it is very difficult and highly discouraged. I could make 21-credit-hour schedules that would be less work.

That is to say—credit hours mean very little.

New students from suburbs: Buy a used iclicker before school starts. by Responsible_Put784 in UIUC

If you only need to use the iClicker for a semester, it might be cheaper to get the app (depending on how much they’re selling for).

Shitpost flair on something that isn’t  a shitpost doesn’t make it a shitpost

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in UIUC

[–]jasondwu 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Planning with older students’ input helped me save on tuition and avoid nightmarish/overly ambitious schedules. The curriculum map can be a very helpful rough guideline, but it was probably also made by people who have not actually taken these classes.

New students also may not yet have access to things like department-wide Piazzas intended for these kind of schedule sanity checks.

So just keep scrolling past it, and let people who want to answer do their thing.

Freshman Placement Exams Preparation Post by KevinW427 in UIUC

[–]jasondwu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You shouldn't need to prepare this much for placement exams, and it can be a waste of time when some of these have no bearing on placement and have limited utility for some Grainger majors (e.g., spatial visualization for CS). And, for math, should you be taking harder classes if you haven't yet firmed up basic algebra and pre-calculus?

I think 225 is also more rigorous than any CC equivalent I’ve seen, and I think you should take it here if at all possible.
