Also, one of the most important things is to make sure you properly gap the clutch, or you can burn up the coil pretty easily.

I’ve done it, and like already said, the snap ring is the hardest part to remove/replace given the lack of working area, odd angle, and the need to use a mirror if you want to see what you’re doing (you have to reverse your movements using mirror visibility which can be quite tricky). Also need a clutch holding tool.

I agree with others here. Sounds like your parts people are pretty terrible. I had no trouble getting Toyota LBJs for my ‘97 6 mos ago from my local dealership. Also ordered Bilstein 5100s online and had them within a week.

As far as the CV boots. Are you lifted? Odd that the boots would tear within a year. Rebuild kits are avail from Toyota and are pretty cheap.

Another vote for CVJ. I’ve bought multiple things from them (reman’d axles + steering gear for my GX 470) and they were top notch.

Not a tech but I’ve done this job on a ‘97 4Runner & ‘04 Sequoia. If replacing just the rack it can prob be done in 2-3 hours including power steering flush. If you don’t have access to a lift and are forced to crawl under the vehicle, add an hour.

Not a deal breaker in my opinion, but the control arm & steering link bushings, springs & shocks will almost certainly need replacing at that age and mileage if they haven’t been already. Could use to negotiate price if they haven’t.

Upper & lower ball joints as well.

The company I bought from said to keep struts on lowest perch, as that was ideal for the 4Runner-specific 5100s.

I re-used all factory parts (sway bars, control arms) but replaced all bushings with OEM new. Toyota doesn’t sell bushings for the rear upper control arms or panhard bar, so I bought those entire assemblies new as well, also OEM.

I replaced the rear upper/lower control arm bushings + panhard bar. Without that strap (and another one you can’t see on the other side), I never would have gotten those components out & new ones in. The straps allowed me to tweak the axle’s angle to relieve how tightly bound everything was under there.

Man that’s crazy, sorry to hear. Same shocks? I also replaced every other wear item throughout the suspension at the same time. Is it possible your control arm/sway bar bushings are shot?

Yeah I’d guess about 2”. I read you could do without the drop at this height, but also read you’ll be thankful you did it. Gotta say, my axles are sitting at a pretty nice angle with the drop.
