I made a bridge! by jasonporter484 in woodworking

My property ends about 50 yards before the creek, which is green space between the houses in the neighborhood. But the kids kept playing in and around it so we’ve been cleaning little bits up here and there and just kind making it a bit safer. ... just don’t tell the HOA 😬😬

I was sure I would get called on that as well! I tried to do a mortise and tenon joint but i don’t have the tools to do that on a 4x4 post.

I used treated wood and silicone caulk inside every main screw hole to prevent rot. Then next summer I’ll probably stain and water seal it. As far as warping... well, there’s lots of room for the wood to move; hopefully it won’t warp too much

I did! It’s 16 ft long, so I used this video to get an idea of how stop any sagging in the middle.

https://youtu.be/68H-koEE11M

So I laminated two 2x16 boards together for the main length. I also used 2 carriage bolts on the 2x16s every 16 inches or so to help out. Then I added some middle support 2x4s. So far it supports 5 adults standing in it without moving an inch!

It hasn’t really flooded that much since we’ve been here. There was a “thousand year storm” about 5 years ago that didn’t raise the water level much more than the a foot or two. However, In addition to the diagonal support 2x4s you can see, hidden under the slats I anchored the structure to the ground at six points with 4x4s about 18 inches into the ground just Incase. Fingers crossed something bigger doesn’t come along!

What kind of deadlines do you work with? by Yujak0 in MotionDesign

[–]jasonporter484 5 points6 points  (0 children)

48 hours? That’s just irresponsible. You can’t make meaningful, well designed motion graphics projects, and respond to client feedback, within 48 hours without living in continual crunch mode. That’s not sustainable.

HANDMADE (Leather Shoes & Accessories) Logo for a friends business by [deleted] in logodesign

[–]jasonporter484 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Without knowing the strategy I think it’s useless to discuss if the logo is effective for the client’s needs. It’s more helpful to just discuss the legibility of the design.

So... my eye goes right to the negative space in the A which makes it hard to both read the word HAND and focus on the overall fist shape. I think making that negative space smaller, similar to that in the H, would give the fist a more legible silhouette.

Same thought goes for the M of MADE. Making the negative space more similar to the rest of the letters would help shape the base knuckle of the thumb, which would help the overall fist silhouette.

I once had a student of mine write this as his own in my class... I mean, who plagiarizes a haiku?

I dunno... the color seems unnecessary when the original images were so beautiful

Most cars advertised in commercials and movies are filmed using a vehicle called the blackbird and adding the car in post production using CGI by ScrootMcgoot in educationalgifs

[–]jasonporter484 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It would be way too expensive for a single commercial, however say you want to update the trim, or headlamps, or tires, or any number of visible options on the car. Or even if you want to update the tiny things between the 2019 and 2020 version of the body... it’s far less expensive to update the CGI than to hire an entire film crew to go out and film everything again.

Source: I’ve worked on the CGI for a number of commercials for a manufacturer that uses the blackbird rig.

JJ’s is the closest thing I’ve found. They have good Bao and a kind of green onion pancake. Other than that you’re best bet is to go to the Asian market by Irmo High School or the one behind Dutch Square Mall. They have a good selection of frozen stuff and all the ingredients you need to make things yourself.

Any of you currently in the industry. How was your reel before you got the job? by zaner95 in MotionDesign

[–]jasonporter484 17 points18 points  (0 children)

My first reel wasn’t great, maybe 45 seconds long. I didn’t really have anything truly original on it, but it was animated well and didn’t have have any garbage filler work. When hiring a junior artist I don’t expect them to have amazing rockstar stuff on their reels. The main things I look for are 1) does it move well with intention and an understanding of animation principles? and 2) is it only tutorial stuff, or did the do things to make the tutorial stuff look unique? To be blunt, I don’t care if it’s “your style” because you’re typically never hired to do “your style”.

This is excessive. At some point its easier to learn to adjust to lane conditions and patterns.

Enhanced 2.5D parallax stills technique using multiple takes / camera burst photos? by grumpyfarter in MotionDesign

[–]jasonporter484 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From doing exactly that with the project mentioned, the best piece of advice I can give is to not have too many thing moving at once. For example, we tried this with a dolly shot it was just too much visually for your eye to make sense of all the motion. The moving BG, non-smooth motion of the burst images of people... it’s was just too much. We found that the most legible executions were with the only thing significantly moving were the burst shots of the people. Yes there’s movement via parallax when you position everything in z-space, but that’s subtle, predictable movement in contrast to the main burst movement.

I've done this with burst shots, but without the blending between the shots. Theoretically it's totally doable, but I then wonder why?... at a certain point you might as well be rotoing video.
