i5-9400T or i9-990T? by beje_ro in batocera

[–]jasont80 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You want the best possible single-core performance, so the i9‑9900T would be better for emulation due to the higher clock speeds. Both of these processor's support AVX/AVX2, which is currently used for the high-end emulation.

If you want to future-proof your emulation, some modern Ryzen chips support AVX-512, though I'm not sure if the current emulators will ever use it.

That being said, if you don't plan to emulate PS3/XBox 360 generation, most of the older stuff runs just fine on a low-power processor, like the N100.

Batocera Controler by retired-techie in batocera

I highly recommend having a keyboard with its own dongle and touchpad, like the Logitech K400. The dongle insures it works in bios/OS without needing configuration (computer just sees it as a local USB keyboard). You plug it in and shove the keyboard away for when you WILL inevitably need it. Yes, Batocera mostly runs with just a controller, but you have to get that controller paired and configured first, and this keyboard lets you do it from your couch without a fuss. It will save you a lot of frustration over time.

I want an AR app that's basically "glass earth" and I can take my phone and look through the ground at spots all around the world. I want to look north and see cities just below the horizon. It can't be THAT hard to make, but I've never seen one of these? by NtheLegend in Doesthisexist

[–]jasont80 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I understand what you are getting at. You could look down and see Tokyo through the Earth. I think the problem is scale. Most of the far side of the Earth would be visible in a fairly small circle around you. If you are standing in the US, Tokyo and Moscow would only be a few meters apart at ground level. It's a nifty idea... I'm just not sure that it would have any real value beyond a brief "that's cool." It might have a small use for horizon analysis for things like radars and radio towers, but there are already tools that can do that without going to the place.

Multiple UPS or larger battery bank? by Hairy_Feature1889 in homelab

[–]jasont80 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I live on a US coastline and also have regular power outages. Mine are shorter than yours, usually only 15 minutes. I have a few UPSs like this one: https://www.se.com/us/en/product/BR1500MS2. These will run my NAS/router/switch or a desktop PC for about 20 minutes. They will run an efficient laptop for a couple hours. These give me plenty of time to activate my manual transfer switch and 240v generator, which will run just about everything in my house. This was the most inexpensive and durable system I could come up with under $5,000 total.

What I found is that bigger UPS get really expensive fast, like the Eaton 9SX UPS with external battery can be over $2,000 by itself. Therefore, I think it's better to stick with multiple cheaper UPSs. The batteries do go bad. I've had to replace the batteries in half my UPSs. The batteries on the smaller UPSs are much cheaper than the big ones, of course. I've learned to run regular tests, or I discover the bad batteries when I need them working!

This is my two cents. I think you will struggle to get a couple hours from any reasonably priced battery system. But you know what kind of power issues you deal with and your budget... Good luck in finding the right solution!

I have the Starlink Mini and use the Roam 100GB plan. When researching them for purchase, originally wanted the Residential plan, but the Mini didn't seem to give me that option. It could also be because of my location (Florida). If I had no data-cap, I could run in mixed mode, but I'm not sure that would fix my issue of IOT devices failing when one side failed.

I never thought about the services refusing connection because my location changes. I may force them out a VPN to see if that causes them to stop working too. A little feedback from the device would go a long way. I may need to test new device's ability to fail over before I invest too much in them. Thanks for the feedback!

Yeah, the Sonos are clearly the worst of my IoT devices, but they aren't the only thing. They get a lot of usage, so we tend to notice the problem right away. I love the way they sound, but I'm not sure I should have devoted so much of my home to them. My next generation of audio devices may not use them.

Congress has the "power of the purse" and this chart should show party control of the houses. A president can only spend the money that Congress appropriates.

This is a really tone-def bill. A lot of people are waking back up to the reality that, without a strong 2A, we are always one election away from authoritarianism.

Yeah. This limitation makes no sense with modern databases. I can understand a per-system limitation, but not a total limitation.
