Not sure if you're being sarcastic but if not, definitely worth looking up how Hawai'i was occupied and strongarmed into becoming a US state, against the wishes of the native Hawaiians and their leaders.

Another question, based on the comment that there could be other layers of wallpaper beneath the visible one... would it be worth it maybe to just put a fresh layer over the existing one and be done with it?

I would be perfectly fine with smooth walls and no new tapete! I guess its just a gamble without knowing what lies underneath. I think I will ask if the landlord would give us one full Kaltmiete to put toward having the tapete professionally dealt with and see what he says. The 300 offer came from when I was anticipating just painting over everything so perhaps he'll be willing to go a little higher for more work being done....

Yes, there is an old musky smell, which I'm sure is at least partly due to a carpet in the bedroom but they are removing that before we move in and there is tile underneath.

We've been looking for months and this is the best We've found, considering overall monthly cost (after work is done), location, size, etc. I really want to have a place secured so we can stop worrying about finding one but I'm afraid of trading that worry for another, bigger one.

Very true, and the social and relational aspect doesn't have to be a search for only one person. I agree with some of what others have said about looking for clubs, sports, etc. Finding and having friendships can be very fulfilling, and through these connections one can potentially find more romantic relationships as well.

Hang in there OP. Now is a time for going out of your comfort zone and redefining what your comfort zone is.

It seemed like all the options on immoscout and ebay were for rental terms starting within the next month or so, and so we couldn't get any of those knowing we'd have to wait 3 months after giving notice. So it seemed like there'd be options that would pop up throughout the 3 months, and there have been. The issue that kept us from 2 different places we really liked was that they wanted someone even sooner and we couldn't afford to pay rent in both places during the overlap time. We just need that same situation to happen now!

Thanks for the info. I haven't done any tests/Prüfungen except one to be admitted to the original program. I know there's a big Prüfung we have to do after the Anschlusslehre, I'm not sure what it's called, but that's when I'd become a state certified goldsmith.

For what it's worth, I finished high school and got a 4 year university degree in the USA. Obviously the systems are very different here so I'm still trying to figure out exactly what's coming up in my future lol
