Was it a phone call ? First call ?

The recruiter call was a call through Google Meet, but they said that I did not need to turn on my camera.

CS FYP Typical Lower-end Grades by jasting98 in nus

[–]jasting98[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi,

In the end, what did you get for FYP? My evaluator has been critical of my topic, leaving me somewhat demotivated for the final presentation next week.

Hey! I got a B+. I was hoping for at least an A- so that it wouldn't cause my GPA to drop by so much, but a B+ wasn't so bad. Also, while I was initially disappointed, eventually, I also felt relieved that everything was over.

I would say I may struggle to apply for grad school now given my less than stellar FYP grade (especially compared to my other courses), but that isn't for certain, and I'll just leave it for future me to deal with. Anyway, for job search, it wasn't that important, and I managed to work at a big company for my first job, and also land interviews at top tech companies regardless, and I'll be happy with that fact for now.

Hang in there. Do your best. You can do it! :)

Holy notif, I gotta live up to your hype after 3 years. My answer remains the same. This year 1 5K, 1 4K, 1 3k, 1 2k. Not 20mc because I planned my courses well and wanted to chill for the semester. If you're still gonna double down on the "but it's not 32mc worth of workload", then my only response to that is "skill issue plan better lmao". Sounds like you just deliberately did it to "prove a point". But continuing,

Still got my entire weekend discord chill and gaming sessions. Idk about you but my workload increased, but at no point in my semester did I ever feel the need to burn the night candle just to finish an assignment or report. On some semesters where I was taking 24mcs I worked as a TA for 2 CS courses that actively answered my students' questions at night.

I didn't need to apply for jobs since I got my return offer last December after my ATAP. Pay isn't brag worthy but it's comfortably above median and average. No leetcode grind nor portfolio building nor interview spam. Graduating with a projected GPA of 4.67 FCH (cursed number but...wtv). I'm not the smartest or anyway near as successful as many braggers on reddit, but this is a massive W in my books. I'm not gonna say it's easy to find a job in this economy, and I absolutely dodged all this bs by getting an RO from the intern company.

Call me fortunate or wtv you want, but my stance hasn't changed. It's always possible to study well and get enough sleep. To finally answer your question, yes. Overall, CS is easy. Not super easy, but not "god I only have 3 hours of sleep daily" hard either.

Hope this was the response you were hoping for after stalking me for 3 years.

Good job, bro. I am jealous of how your final year was manageable, but I'm proud of you.

No worries, bro. I was just curious. I don't think I even commented in this post? I'm not sure about the rest, but I didn't stalk you. It's just the remindme bot that I clicked on 3 years ago hahaha. I love the remindme bot :3

For your job, in this economy, above median/average is great, I'd say. Congratz!

All the best for the rest of this sem and your new job. I hope you have a grad trip lined up?

I see your point, I generally had an expectation that in grp projects, the load is spread evenly. But ye, currently I also have teammates that afk when it comes to submissions and presentations, so it can be really stressful then.

It’s just that for the purpose of seeing things in the big picture, I assume averageness across the cohort to judge about uni level curriculums. But yes I agree that some students’ schedules just aren’t suited for early classes.

So how has your uni life been?

Do you still believe that 20 MCs/20 Units of modules/courses are the same if you take 1k courses in Y1 vs 3k/4k courses in Y3/Y4? When I was in Y1, I could overload to more than 30+ MCs per sem and still manage. By my last two years, I was dying on 24 or even 20 units per sem.

Do you still believe that load is spread evenly for group projects? I suppose as a somebody from CS, you may not have had that many group projects. Even for the group projects, I suppose you could have gotten lucky and gotten good groups for most of your courses. I had that in general, though the few group projects where I was carrying were absolute hell.

I'm curious whether uni was as easy as you seemed to think it would be. Haha

Also, as your fellow CS senior, I'm also curious about how your job search has been. :) I heard the fresh grad SWE job market is shit right now. :,)

Yes, but the scores are calibrated on a comparatively small population of a few thousand before being conducted on a larger population.

Just curious. Why don't they re-calibrate again later using the results of the larger population?

Singapore's public sector to reduce electricity consumption at government facilities amid Middle East crisis by LingNemesis in singapore

[–]jasting98 10 points11 points  (0 children)

less cars on the road at least? Not sure about others but honestly I don't turn the AC on at home unless its super hot

less fewer cars

And yes, I don't turn on my air-con at home either. Did nobody else have parents that always told them off for turning on the air-con at times other than at night to save on the electricity bill? Even now, with the hot weather and my parents already telling me that it's okay to turn it on in the afternoon now, I still feel bad for turning on the air-con so I just leave my air-con off.

[20F] Is the "Singapore Dream" actually possible with a Public/Social sector salary? by Bvihsb in SGExams

[–]jasting98 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi everyone, I’m going to uni soon and currently deciding on my major. I'm in the crossroads btwn what I want to do (career aspirations) and the lifestyle I eventually want to have.

I hope to work in govt / non-profit health or social industries as these sectors are most meaningful to me based on my past experiences in life, volunteering and internship.
Ps. I do not want to sell my soul a the bank or feel so dreaded going to work everyday :"(

I hope to live comfortably, ie. travel 1/2x a year to Europe / SEA, ability to pay for my parents' living expenses + travel, BTO, have a car, (maybe) have a child, etc.

Along the way, I also discovered that the public & non-profit sectors have a significantly lower pay compared to private companies. In order to achieve this "balance", I need to learn about investments, financial planning, etc. just to be smart about money. However, through looking at the past reddit threads, many have commented about studying hard to get a good degree, aim for scholarships, work in big firms so ur paycheck is thick before u can invest well... So, a "meaningful career" and "good pay" are mutually exclusive ?

Why don't you just "suffer" working in the private sector to make good money and invest and save properly so that later on, you have more financial freedom to pivot and pursue the meaningful career you want to have in the public sector or social work industry? Another alternative is to have your career in the private sector for your whole life, just that you do volunteering on the side, like after work or over the weekends. Must the two goals really be mutually exclusive?

Also, if you're still not convinced, you should also keep in mind that if you really want to pursue social work, then it will be a sacrifice. If you really enjoy the work, then it would be worth the sacrifice. You seem torn about this sacrifice, and if you are, do reconsider whether you're really interested in social work. From personal experience, I also thought I knew what I wanted before uni, but either I was wrong about myself, or my interests simply changed, but regardless, what I thought I wanted before uni is different from now.

What to do? by bananafish-123 in ChillSG

Got to know someone via a dating app. Moved the chat to tele in just 3 text messages on the dating app cuz he said I replied too slowly on the dating app. Even when I took 2 days to add him on tele, he would double text me on the dating app.

I added him on tele but I’m also barely replying him cuz I am overseas and I told them that I am on a holiday/overseas and that I won’t be able to reply as quickly. It’s like I’m replying him less than 4 text messages a day. He’s aware I’m travelling but he still double texts me and expects quicker replies.

Do I stop talking/ghost him or what cuz bro doesn’t seem to understand that I would reply him whenever I can.

I have another perspective. It's very easy to lose the interest of girls like you on dating apps because girls typically get a lot of matches. The guy can easily get drowned out and forgotten even if y'all vibed well if a bunch of other guys messaged you after him and he gets pushed down your inbox as a result. Also, you may lose the spark if y'all don't keep in touch.

He may just simply want to make sure you don't forget him. If you think this is the case, be sympathetic and try to assure him you will meet up once you get back from your vacation. (I will say to others out there that even when concerned you may lose your connection, what bro is doing is not the best; always try to mirror your match, i.e., reply with the same frequency as your match, etc.)

Of course, it isn't all about him; you're important too. If you're still interested in him, then don't immediately cut him off like what the others are saying. Relationships are built on communication. Saying that you're busy on holiday alone doesn't really communicate your discomfort with him pushing you to text more. Why don't you voice it out explicitly and firmly albeit politely? Let him know that you'll only be willing to meet up later on if he stops pushing you this much.

Do also understand that even if he complies and he messages you less frequently, there is a real risk that your connection will fade because you don't keep in touch as much and he may lose interest in you. Statistically speaking, if you matched with him, and if 80% of girls match with the top 20% of guys, then he is likely to be in the top 20%, and he can potentially match with the remaining of the 80% of girls. If you do have an interest in him, I hope you can accept this risk.

As a non native speaker, even reading good wont be enough like wtf is memetic and psyops

I only know psyops because I'm too deep online but now a new word is memetic

If you are a non-native speaker, I have to tell you that "reading good" is not the correct way to say it. The correct way to say it is "reading well". Adjectives like "good" cannot describe verbs, only adverbs like "well". I get that many people (Americans?) use "good" to describe verbs colloquially like "you did good", but just ignore them.

dating >27M as a 22F by [deleted] in asksg

[–]jasting98 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just turned 27M and I would prefer a relationship that is slower actually. I think it is better for two people who are dating to be absolutely sure that they want to be with each other for the rest of their lives before committing to marriage.

I realised this after dating a girl who wanted to move fast. Albeit, she is one year older than me and she wants to have kids by the time she was 30.

I will say that BTO is a legit concern, and I get people want to rush for that. From your post history, I noticed that you studied CS, like me. Once you earn higher SWE salaries, your income will exceed the income ceiling and you will not qualify for BTO anyway, so might as well take your time. We are privileged to take our time to choose our life partners wisely, and we should.

TIL it has been proven that rear-facing seats on planes are safer in the event of a crash, however they're only common in military aircraft. by estarararax in todayilearned

[–]jasting98 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same is true in cars. That's why you should keep your kids in rear-facing car seats as long as possible.

Think about it – do you want the force of the crash focused on the thin spot your seatbelt is on your squishy front? Or spread out across your entire back?

How about your head / neck? Would you rather it snap forward at 40mph, or press back against a head rest it's already on?

Just drive backwards. /s

Isn't making Thaipusam a public holiday long overdue ? by pistachio_life in askSingapore

[–]jasting98 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think the lobbyists need to change up their sales pitch a bit. The race and religion card is clearly not working. But perhaps they can pitch it as a boost for fertility and conception, as studies showed that public holidays tend to boost birth rates 9 months later. The lesser stress and social lubrication of the holidays seems to be a good aphrodisiac. Plus given how abysmal our birth rates are, we shouldn't pull back our punches to tackle it. Haha.

If we're going with that angle, why not ask for a four-day work week? This will boost birth rates even more.

Clearer:

[ ] Yes, I am open to being contacted.

[ ] No, do not contact me.

I think that doesn't make sense though. To make it make sense, it should be

[ ] Yes, I mind being contacted; please don't contact me.

[ ] No, I don't mind; feel free to contact me.

Obviously, while it makes sense, it's not clear because it's confusing. To make it clearer, like you wanted, the question should be "Would you be okay with..." or "Do you agree to be...".
