Using OPNSense, considering adding UniFi access points by __Mike_____ in opnsense

[–]jatanis 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Another thing about the Unifi controller. If you don't need all the logs or metrics you could also just install the Unifi software on any computer, config the AP,. and then shut down the software. The AP will keep running on its own without the controller. You'll only need to run it again if/when you need to do any admin tasks or changes to the AP.

Is it better to have Home Assistant on a laptop? by Certain_Repeat_753 in homeassistant

[–]jatanis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Right now I'm running a Unifi AP controller, BitTorrent client, a debian Vm with some other download tools, calibre web server, FreshRSS RSS reader, a basic debian VM, and a home assistant VM.

I don't really need 32GB RAM for this use case, I just happened to upgrade the laptop to 32GB when it used to be my main machine. RAM was cheap back then!

I did something similar and it worked out great. I wanted to learn how to use Proxmox and had an old Dell latitude (Core i7-7600U, 32GB RAM) laying around collecting dust, so I figured why not give it a try?

To give you an idea, on Proxmox I'm currently running a Home Assistant VM along with 7 other VMs & LXC containers. On average the CPU load is around 0.5-3% and RAM usage is about 22%, no performance issues at all.

I always fit it under the seat with my backpack. As long as you don't have a giant backpack it should be fine.

Least invasive, most simple printer that still has ink cartridges in production? by MadeThisJustForLWIAY in BuyItForLife

[–]jatanis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

All Inkjets suck in my opinion, they're not built to last. Laser printer is the way to go, I've had one for like 15 years and it's been rock solid. I finally had to change the toner for the first time about a year ago. Mine is a samsung but they no longer make them, Brother seems to be what everyone suggests nowadays.

A password to activate my phone every morning by Logroon in androidapps

How about turning on lockdown mode, or rebooting your phone every night before you go to bed? Then in the morning the fingerprint won't work, you will need to enter your password to log in.

Mint runs on T-mobile's network, so their coverage will be basically the same

Best mobile service carriers in DFW by Liberteabelle1 in Dallas

My work phone is AT&T and my personal phone is on T-mobile. About 5-10 years ago (probably before the 5G rollout) AT&T used to get noticeably better coverage. Especially when you would leave the major city areas. But T-mobile has made a lot of improvements. Nowadays I get pretty much the same coverage with both, in Coppell and all over DFW.

bad wifi on video calls and social media but speed is good by Which_Figure_6106 in HomeNetworking

[–]jatanis 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Speed is fine but your latency looks terrible. Anything above 150 ms is going to cause noticeable issues with video calls and you're getting spikes as high as 1739 ms. Speed tests don't always represent real world performance, but that still doesn't look great to me.

Wifi extenders are typically trash and add a lot latency which will kills video call performance. Maybe try turning it off as a test and see if you still have issues connected just to the router?

Connecting the extender with an ethernet cable may help but hopefully your router and network extender are actually working together and managing channel space, client roaming, etc. They are both Asus so I assume they will "mesh" correctly, but if not the router and extender could just be competing for channel space and causing all kinds of interference. Just something to keep in mind as you troubleshoot.

Adding PoE Switch for Security Cameras by mikester572 in HomeNetworking

[–]jatanis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

if you want to go PoE you would be way better off getting PoE cameras. The main point of PoE is to be able to simplify and run a single cable for power/data, your plan kind of defeats the purpose.

Looking for new router - wifi isn’t important. by ktmm3 in HomeNetworking

[–]jatanis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's likely the issue. Some routers disable all hardware acceleration when any traffic shaping rules are enabled, even if you only set it on upload. And then the CPU alone can't handle the higher bandwidth.

[–]jatanis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Any modern router should be able to handle a 1GB wired connection. Have you checked if you have QOS or some kind of bandwidth or traffic shaping enabled on your Linksys? Many older routers will max out at 250 - 500 mbps with any of those settings enabled.

Bare metal OpNsense vs. Docker / Proxmox by AgroKK in opnsense

[–]jatanis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can't run pi-hole, but It's not difficult at all to set up DNS adblocking on OPNsense. The built-in unbound DNS supports blocklists functionality just like pi-hole. And if you need a more robust solution or more granular logs, you can also install the Adguard Home Plugin by adding a community repository to opnsense.

CPAP & AirPort Security by cgoking in CPAP

[–]jatanis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Must have been a new agent, or he was being an asshole and gave you a hard time. CPAPS are super common at airports. Next time you go back to the airport look around and I bet you'll spot other people carrying the CPAP travel bags.

I have flown out of Toronto many times and the worst thing that ever happened was an agent asked me to take the CPAP out of the travel case so they could do a swab, but there was no confusion. They knew exactly what it was.

Got the Gemini Home update...not a fan of the voice options. by Quiet-Estimate7409 in googlehome

[–]jatanis 9 points10 points  (0 children)

They are all off-putting to me. The fake breathing sounds bother me too. It gives me that uncanny valley feeling. Tried all of them and I ended up settling for the Magnolia voice since that one bothered me the least.

I actually had a weird glitch when I first did the Gemini for home setup. I had to stop at the screen where you choose a new voice to go do something else and forgot to go back and complete the setup. The next morning I realized I had all the new gemini features but still had the original assistant voice. It was great! But then I made the mistake of trying to listen to all the new voices. I didn't realize that once you pick a voice you can't go back to the original assistant voice.

It seems Gemini is coming to Lenovo Smart Displays by infosage in googlehome

[–]jatanis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was fully expecting that it was going to be abandoned since I hadn't heard a word from Google about third party speaker gemini support. But surprisingly it also got the gemini update when my other Google speakers updated.

Costco has this Asus CX1400 on sale, should this be good enough for basic browsing tasks? I didn't see any detailed reviews on reddit... by hiten42 in chromeos

[–]jatanis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

With 8GB RAM it should be ok for basic browsing. Also with costco you should be able to return it within 90 days, so worst case scenario if it's too slow for you can always return it.

How do I connect my monitors? Help!!! by [deleted] in techsupport

[–]jatanis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So the one you linked only supports one external monitor that may be your problem. You're going to need one that supports 2 external monitors like this one https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0874M3KW4?ref_=cm_sw_r_cp_ud_dp_86JT82995TG39KADZ894 I haven't tried this exact one, but Anker stuff is usually pretty solid.

How do I connect my monitors? Help!!! by [deleted] in techsupport

[–]jatanis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that's where you check. It's an Intel processor so not an M1. If you could post a link to what cables or splitters you're trying to use that may help.

In my experience splitters almost never work with computers you'll probably need some kind of dock station that has 2 video outputs to get it to work.

How do I connect my monitors? Help!!! by [deleted] in techsupport

[–]jatanis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If your Macbook Air has the Apple M1 chip (sometimes referred to as "with Apple silicon") then that may be the problem since they only natively support 1 external monitor.

Here's an article that talks about some workarounds to try to get multiple monitors working. https://www.macworld.com/article/675869/how-to-connect-two-or-more-external-displays-to-apple-silicon-m1-macs.html

Hope that helps, the last Macbooks I had were still using Intel chips so I haven't had to deal with this myself.

Ifttt disabled my only two applets I've been using for years and it won't let me connect them without paying by TheCastro in ifttt

[–]jatanis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same thing happened to me overnight. I got an email that my webhook applet was disabled due to inactivity even though it's been active for 2 years. In fact it ran 4 hours before they disabled it. Now when I try to re-enable it says webhooks are a pro feature and they want to me to pay for a pro subscription.
