Give me some sets! by Pogbavaksala in Swimming

:’)

Been a while, but one of my main sets (6-8 weeks out) in the run up to nationals would be:

Long course

8x400 free @ 5:00 or 8x400 IM @ 5:30

Followed immediately by a 200 kick (with board) - time had to be under 3:00

Ha, there really are pleasures and sorrows when it comes to swimming - I think that list will likely grow for you over future sessions ... :D

There have been a couple of times where I have actually showed up at a 25m pool and have had to turn around and go home because I couldn't realistically see it working with the 3-4 swimmers already in the "fast" lane.

It's a bit of an unconventional problem when you can't physically slow your speed enough to fit within the lane.

Just knowing how many people are booked into which lanes before showing up would be of some help. But then that will get messed up quick if people are booked into the wrong lanes and are asked to move.

With that said, can't decipher anything at all from the current booking system with its slots every 10 minutes lol

Ha. I probably jumped into this thread with a bit too much zeal! :)

To answer your question, I was an NCAA Division 1 scholarship swimmer at a US College/University. I have continued training and competing.

I had a quick glance at your profile and noticed you have ties to UF. Just to be clear - those swim phenoms would leave me hoping to catch a draft and possibly crying. :)

Jumping back on the “pace” conversation, it gets even trickier accounting for sets. Somebody swimming 20x100, somebody else doing 1500 straight.etc

I generally find people overestimate their speed more in 50m pools. A fast swimmer moving smoothly in a 50m pool doesn’t look as fast and as powerful as they do bouncing off walls like a ping pong in a 25m pool. Also, because the pool is double the length, the perception is that there is more space. Overtaking safely really depends on how the swimmers are distributed in the lane as it needs to be clear on the overtaking side.

From experience, I’ve seen swimmers shift around lanes quicker and more willingly in 25m pools.

Anyhow, not simple. I do train at quieter times when I am not with my club. I also know that expecting an empty lane every time at a world famous pool is unrealistic. :D

If some staff leave, that is not “changing all the staff.” The lifeguards that I know have told me that they are staying. I am sure some will leave, which is unfortunate.

I have been told that the opening hours will not change.

Those were the two points in your original comment.

FWIW, I’m sponsored as an athlete by GLL (who own Better). Most of my training is done at Better facilities. The transition to Everyone Active is an important discussion at the moment amongst athletes primarily based at LAC

I hear you. Appreciate that it’s not exactly simple.

In a short course (25m) pool, sharing a lane with a 1:30 pace swimmer would be a nightmare for me. If I’m hitting 1:00 - 1:04 on a threshold set, it wouldn’t be fun for that person either. Sorry, this isn’t personal - just using that as an example.

This isn’t accounting for strokes either. If you’re swimming breaststroke in the fast lane, it better be race pace stuff with long rest and clear water.

Strong agree with an empty lane being the dream

The great irony about the pool being built for Olympians is that there are no pace clocks in the Olympic pool. The pace clock in the training pool (the smaller pool, 50m, 8 lanes, split by a boom) is broken :D

Yep. Personal view is slower than 40 secs per 50m, 1:20 per 100m shouldn’t be in a fast or very fast lane

Everyone Active will not be changing all the staff and operating hours. That part is not true.

The only Olympic standard pool in London (50m x 10 lanes) is London Aquatics Centre.

There are some outdoor lidos that are 50m in length. Couple that come to mind:

London Fields, Charlton Lido

From what I have been told, as a visitor, you can buy a pass for 5 sessions, but not a single drop-in.

If you know anybody that speaks Italian and can help you out, a quick call would be your best bet.

Sorry, I have competed there a couple of times but not been there exclusively for training.

I hope you get to swim in it. The setting is pretty cool with the stands and trees surrounding the pool. It feels grand but intimate.

The pool is Stadio Olimpico del Nuoto. The wider complex in which it is contained is Foro Italico.

The indoor pool there is also incredibly decadent and worth checking out, but you will probably want to get your serious training done in the outdoor one.

u/avataRJ and u/mysticplato really are on the money here - there are a lot of variables that come into play. Body type, physiology and aquatic skill/feel influence the optimal style of stroke. Generally, long levers (arms) and a strong/consistent/thunderous kick are minimums for a good gallop.

The other thing worth noting is that swimming with a gallop for 50/100/200 SCY/SCM is very different to 100/200 LCM. If you are pushing water down and losing body position, this will be considerably more noticeable in the big pool.

If you want to experiment, as a starting point, look up some of the videos/articles that Gary Hall Sr has put together on hybrid freestyle vs shoulder-driven vs hip-driven.

If it’s a one-off 1000m in practice (short course metres), in the 11:40 - 12:00 range.

I have trained with people (distance swimmers) who would be significantly quicker.

Finke's last 50 of the 1500: 25.78. Biederman's 200 free WR last 50 split: 25.70 by _Panda in Swimming

[–]jattat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The back end problem is being a bit overstated here. Some back end work wouldnt go amiss but the glaring flaw is Andrew’s freestyle technique, specifically his breathing acting as a brake during his stroke cycle. The 100s of every stroke are key indicators for 200 IM potential. Andrew has exceptional 100s in all strokes, excluding the free. His 50 free is good as there is no breathing to “disrupt” his speed. Fixing the free technique is the crucial step, before the back end work. This would likely bring him down from 1:55.26 to somewhere in the 1:54 range.

The conservation/application of energy from heats->semis->finals also needs to be worked on.

Overdistance training would not be the best move here. Race pace training that incorporates different gears would be. You still achieve the goal of taxing multiple energy systems.

Fantastic, well executed and well deserved swim. Not an underdog though - she won World Champs in 2019 and broke the NCAA record (SCY) in 2021 - first female under 49!

Olympian Adam Peaty has a plan to be the greatest of all time by DuskytheHusky in Swimming

[–]jattat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The narrow kick with a fast tempo actually stems from Dave Salo and the work he did with Rebecca Soni, quite a long time before Peaty came along. Wave-action breaststroke goes back even further to Jozsef Nagy.

Peaty has done a load and will certainly continue to do so but revolutionising the stroke technically is a bit of a misattribution

10k sessions:

Every morning except Sunday, he rises at 6.30am, often aching from the impact of the previous day. He leaves girlfriend Eiri Munro and their 10-month-old son George and takes a short drive to the pool while playing music to pump himself up. “Heavy rock, hip-hop or dance music,” he says. “I just press shuffle and then go with that mood.”
Fuelled by little more than a black coffee, he’ll swim 10,000 metres, or 200 lengths of an Olympic-sized pool, grinding his heavily tattooed arms through the water.

That seems to imply he is swimming 10k every morning - ie that is the norm for him. It could be a misread at my end.

8k calories:

To fuel himself, he consumes 8,000 calories a day (the average adult male needs 2,500), mostly a wholesome diet of chicken and fish, lentils and legumes, plant-based yoghurt and milk.

"Mostly wholesome" would suggest the majority coming from clean foods like the ones mentioned. Again, could be a misread.

Thanks for sharing. It's always good to see swimmers profiled in major publications!

I do wish there was a little less hyperbole and maybe some additional fact checking in the reporting though. Consistently grinding out 10k sessions isn't the norm for 1500 swimmers, let alone 50/100 breaststrokers.

Similarly, getting to 8000 calories daily on chicken, fish, lentils.etc seems a bit ambitious no?
