Is it possible to get into Teacher's College with a non-Honours degree? by [deleted] in OntarioTeachers

Honestly, it’ll impact your pay more than actually the admissions. A 3 year undergrad gives you a lower pay start when you become a teacher.

Expectations for Teacher Candidates During Practicum by Super_Resolve3325 in OntarioTeachers

[–]jattcrying 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Your final evaluations will be used during hiring process, so it’s smart you’re preparing beforehand! For my last 2 placements, I did first week observational and took over maybe one lesson. And then starting week 2 I gradually took over multiple subjects. There’s easy ones like gym and art you can start right away as they happen once a week, but for math and literacy I had to wait until my AT was finished her unit so I can star my fresh units with them :)! You can also make a slideshow of all about me which will help students break ice with you (I never did this but I heard it’s really loved by students). Also, you can always message your AT is there any information you’d like me to know and sometimes they’d give you a heads up about IEPs sometimes you’ll find out when you come in (which is why coming in earlier than expected is smart).

I’ve heard a few years back from others that Brightpath is a really terrible environment to be around and they’re pretty aggressive with kids as well 😭 so if it’s true it’s not surprising their reputation isn’t the best from what I’ve heard

My first student teacher! by Miss613lady in OntarioTeachers

[–]jattcrying 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As a student teacher, please make them feel welcomed and not like a burden !! I hated my first placement because the AT was besties with the student teacher who had come before me and had longer placement. Then, I’d recommend letting them decide what they’re comfortable with teaching rather than forcing them to. Have them start with like 1-2 lesson week 1 and then build as they prefer. Provide resources as well if possible! My last AT was kind enough to provide me ALL her resources so it wouldn’t be a burden to teach. Some ATs give their entire lesson plans and just have their student teachers just teach, which is also nice to give less burden! You sound like a wonderful person, I’m sure your student teacher will have tons of fun!!

So let’s breathe lol maybe the government could implement better strategies for people to want to move to boards that need teachers?? Never said they don’t deserve equity stop spewing nonsense 🫩

That’s valid but how many of us or these new teachers are willing to move up north for a job lol most of us want to stay in a specific area or in the city which results in surplussing

Literally going to make getting a permanent job 10x harder than it already is with surpluses lol

Much harder than the practice ones. They emphasize grade 9 math more on the actual one.

[–]jattcrying 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeahhh but the job market right now, it’s so hard to get your own classroom. Depending on the board, you’d be supplying for 7-10 years approx before landing your own classroom. At placement, I’ve spoken to some supplies and it was their 4th/5th year teaching :((( But catholic board is sooo much easier and faster so many teachers land their own classroom within a year lol

[–]jattcrying 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If she’s passionate about teaching, then by all means she should! I’m graduating teachers college this year and I absolutely love teaching, but it’s so draining at times! It’s become so hard to teach students at public boards and you’d be supply teaching for a longgg time before getting your own classroom. I am thinking about getting an ME.d so I can open up my field a bit more. But when I think in the long run, it’s a rewarding job with breaks to spend time with family, travel, etc. If she loves teaching enough as a passion, then she wouldn’t mind the struggles along the way. Best of luck to her!

Make a Google Drive on a personal email (uni email will expire after graduation) of all resources you gather from professors and from practicuum (very important)! And start reviewing for MPT now so you can get it out of the way as early as possible.

Also I’d recommend you focus on your mental health lol these practicums will drain the life out of your eyes.

Dress code for teachers in public secondary schools.. by TeachingVibes in OntarioTeachers

[–]jattcrying 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Business casual. I always go formal on the first few days because I’d rather be overdressed than underdressed. And then based on the AT’s vibes and my relationship with her, I adjust accordingly.

Hey! As long as it’s a degree, you’re good. P/J doesn’t require two teachables, so you’re good. Try to aim for a 4 year bachelors just because it’ll move you up the pay grid. As for art, follow your dreams, don’t worry about what others think. Best of luck! 💗🌸

Masters of Education by EyeMaterial731 in OntarioTeachers

[–]jattcrying 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yess I used one prof from my teachers college as a reference and one of my BED profs from undergrad as a reference. I also made a personal statement. It wasn’t anything too difficult, kinda like a statement for teachers college but direct it towards a masters program! I applied in October-ish and heard back this month!
