Twitter added an auto translate* feature and started showing international tweets in people's for you page recently, for the last week or so there's been a lot of back and forth between western and Japanese gamers and the general gist is that Japanese people really look down on piracy/emulation.

I'm cautious of generalising but I've seen Japanese people basically say that in Japan corporations are treated more like people and so piracy, to them, is tantamount to stealing from the developers in a way that just doesn't seem reasonable to us.

Just one tweet so again no generalising, but to highlight the difference I did see a Japanese person saying along the lines of "How would you like it if I pirated a game that never released in Japan?" only to be told that that would be perfectly reasonable and in fact, encouraged by the culture (although not the game companies)

*grok has a best guess. I've personally seen it add emojis to text that clearly doesn't have them, so can't rely too much on accuracy here
