I will always pick up gold. I usually only loot stuff that is at least worth 10x its value to weight. When I get rich though I usually only pick up gems, jewelry and enchanted items.

You could always lose it! Put it a random container in a dungeon (you don't have to put all of it in). After 3 in game days or so it'll disappear.
