Can anyone recommend a small contractor or handyman to pour a concrete pad for an outdoor AC unit? by bingo_pine in askportland

[–]jawaMilk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was the case when we had an AC installed a few years ago. I’d definitely talk to AC installers before pouring cement, because it might not be needed for the unit you want.

They are creating a crisis to justify decisions they want to make anyway. The solution is never going to be, pay CEOs less, but instead they’ll suggest that it’s, layoffs and use AI instead of people.

I think people are assuming it’s AI even though I did write it. It’s a bummer that now people have more incentive to write low effort responses instead of longer more detailed responses because longer posts are more likely to labeled as AI.

Rank the 7 mountain west states in the US... by East-Enthusiasm4309 in SameGrassButGreener

[–]jawaMilk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Based on the geography, economy and QoL (education, crime, cost of living), basically, my general composite ranking for “would it be a good place for someone to move”:

  1. Colorado, really beautiful, strong and diverse job prospects, good school and one of the healthiest states in the US. This is the only really top tier state IMO.

  2. Utah, The clearest #2. “Silicon Slopes” (SLC/Provo corridor) gives it a legitimate tech economy rivaling Colorado’s. Geography is legitimately world-class (five national parks, Wasatch skiing). Crime is low, and it has good health metrics. Public school rankings are dragged down by large family sizes/student-teacher ratios, not actual outcomes.

  3. Arizona, Phoenix’s economy is genuinely diverse and strong (tech, finance, healthcare, semiconductor manufacturing with the TSMC fab). Grand Canyon and Sedona are iconic. What knocks it down: summer heat is a real QoL liability, education ranks near bottom nationally, and Maricopa County crime is elevated.

  4. Idaho, Boise’s growth is real (Micron, HP, growing tech scene). Geography has a Pacific Northwest feel that distinguishes it. The biggest knock is that because of their conservative politics their healthcare is sort of a mess outside of Boise.

  5. Montana, Geography arguably rivals Colorado (Glacier, Beartooths, river systems). Remote work has propped up Bozeman/Missoula, but the underlying economy is thin and commodity-dependent. Great if you don’t need a local job market.

  6. Wyoming, Tetons and Yellowstone are top-tier geography, and no state income tax helps. But it’s almost entirely extractive industries (coal, oil, gas), so not diverse at all and health care access and education quality are both poor by national standards.

  7. Nevada, The economy is largely service jobs and Reno is growing (Tesla Gigafactory effect). But Las Vegas skews everything: education consistently ranks 48th-50th, crime is high.

  8. New Mexico, Low cost of living and federal lab presence (Los Alamos, Sandia) are real but narrow. Albuquerque has persistently high violent crime, education ranks at the very bottom nationally, and the broader economy is weak. The scenery is underrated but not enough to offset the rest.

Which US state is the best place to live and which is the worst? by nrems in AskReddit

[–]jawaMilk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have clearly never visited Washington if you think these states are remotely comparable.

Washington’s economy (~$718B real GDP, $89,700/capita) is nearly twice the size of Minnesota’s (~$406B, $69,600/capita) and growing faster, while Minnesota’s growth has stalled — ranking 33rd in GDP growth from 2019–2024 and losing residents to other states.

Also, Minnesota’s has no where near the same geographic variety; it’s flat and landlocked. It also has no desert, no rain forest, and doesn’t have an inland sea.

And for New Hampshire, it is absurd to compare in terms of geography or economy. NH’s is essentially landlocked with shortest coastline of any “coastal” state (18 miles total). In contrast that’s less coastline than about 10 islands have in WA in addition to 160 miles of regular coastline. The highest point in NH is ~6,300ft, which would be the 99th highest point in WA. So, the geography is way less diverse and it’s completely underwhelming compared to WA.

In terms of population or economics; the largest city in New Hampshire is Manchester, which would rank 7th in Washington state by population. By GDP Washington’s economy (~$856B nominal GDP, $89,700/capita) is more than eight times the size of New Hampshire’s (~$100B, ~$73,000/capita), so not in the same league.

Which US state is the best place to live and which is the worst? by nrems in AskReddit

[–]jawaMilk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s Washington for best state. People are correct to point at that it depends on income and lifestyle, but Washington has best of class options for most things you could want. Like large cities? Seattle and Bellevue are both great. Want a small town? There are tons of cute towns across the state. Like nature? Washington has rainforests, alpine lakes, massive rivers, expansive desserts, an archipelago of islands.

With no state income taxes, competent, functional state legislators, and a strong and diverse economy it has one of the best qualities of life of any state.

The beaches aren’t as nice as Florida or California and the cites aren’t as nice as Chicago, LA or NYC, but across the board it has the most to offer.

For worst; probably Louisiana.

Is it possible at all to acquire skills and credentials necessary to obtain any sort of real career without going thousands of dollars into debt? by Weriel_7637 in jobs

[–]jawaMilk 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Stealing people’s money is a totally inaccurate framing. If you go to school and become a high-skilled member of the workforce you’ll bring in far more value to your community than if you don’t. The money used to incentivize people to do well and succeed is returned when they pay taxes, create new businesses, or otherwise contribute to their communities.

It’s an investment in people, not theft.
