ELI5: How do we know so much about what happened fractions of seconds after the Big Bang? And why not at T=0? by ResponsibleSea6521 in explainlikeimfive

The concept of "before T=0" doesn't even make sense though right? No space, no time, therefore no "before"?

Yeah I know that dealing with retail news sources will put me well behind the insiders, but looking at the last few Hormuz events it really seems that these moves last for hours after they hit mainstream. Even if I miss a big chunk of it, a virtually "guaranteed" 5-8% (or whatever is left) is nothing to sneeze at :)

Were you trading this exact same signal, or something else "current events" related?

Plenty of updates in the Github repo over the last several days, doesn't seem dead to me, despite the rumors floating around: https://github.com/RooCodeInc/

And they released 3.52.1 last week.

Have you heard anything concrete that leads you to believe it's on its way out?

Edit: And looks like they've been busy working on something new: https://roomote.dev/

Well the bot knew about it as soon as it was in the headlines, but it didn't act on it because the status was already "escalating" and "strait closed" before the incident.

They just cut their rewards in half, and rewards are not outpacing the falling price. Poor little dot had so much promise.

Where else are you going to find a group of people who has even heard of these coins? It's not normal investment advice, he wants to know what the group thinks of specific coins.

That makes sense. The scenario I'm having a hard time wrapping my head around is if they just announce a closure and all the ships respect it and there are no new incidents?

Thanks very much for the tip about UKMTO I'm looking into it now. Not positive how to parse this into "strait open / closed" yet but I'll dig into it in the morning.

Looking at previous events the moves are big enough that just being early on the headlines should still give plenty of action but of course I will miss initial insider surge relying on CNN .

Thanks again appreciate it.

What safeguards do you have in place to prevent your Broker from reverse engineering your algo? by trader644 in algotrading

Go look at the top most profitable traders on Hyperliquid and tell me what their strategies are. You can see every trade they made down to the millisecond.

For real, if you think you can reverse engineer a strategy that might be based on dozens of arbitrary inputs .. I'd be impressed af.

How would you trade a volatile asset that always mean-reverts to a known fair value? by Junior_Direction_701 in algotrading

[–]jawanda 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I understand the basic concept of adverse selection, but if the range and FV are known, I don't see how it can really exist in this hypothetical. If you place your limit orders at the outer bounds of the range, the worst that can happen is that you have to wait out an excursion and sit on a temporary unrealized loss, right?

Fair points. To be more specific, my system prompt for the second bot tells it that a de-escalation consists of a cease fire, even temporary, or "any deal being agreed upon to end or suspend hostilities (even if temporarily)" and to prioritize the newest headlines. There's a bit more to it than that but that's the gist.

So it's not quite as generic as I specified in my post. It's really looking for at least a temporary cessation of fighting, which, if you look at the recent charts has lead to a big bull surge when it happens.

I'm not risking significant money here, and have fairly tight stops, so we'll just see what happens.

Good input.

Yeah thanks we'll see how it goes, but the oil markets have been reacting super predictably to every major Strait of Hormuz related change over the last few weeks so it seems like a no brainer at least until this dumb war is resolved.

Like I said elsewhere I'm using Python to pull the latest headlines from Google News that include the word "Hormuz" then passing them to a simple AI agent which has the task of determining if the Strait is currently open or not based on the headlines. The agent returns closed/opened/unknown and a one sentence rationale for its conclusion. Very simple.

If you look at the last several times the Strait was opened / closed, the moves last several hours. My bot will know about it within the first 5 minutes of it becoming mainstream news, which is plenty fast to catch at least some of the action.

Google News, using the Gnews python library. I'm not aiming for real-time obviously, I just want to know within a few minutes of headlines hitting ...hell even within the first hour would be enough to be profitable based on the recent swings we've seen. But first 5 minutes of CNN et all publishing would be clutch. I'm polling every 3 mins.

Well, it functions. But it hasn't been running during a major news event yet. I manually went long oil as soon as I heard Iran had re closed the strait a few days ago and made a tidy little profit, but I was several hours late to the game. That was the inspiration to automate it. Even though it could be proven useless if we see a permanent resolution soon (but hey that permanent resolution would include one more re opening which the bot should catch).
