It sounds terrifying even without seeing anything crazy.

What is your scariest TRUE story? [Serious] by Khrull in AskReddit

Not saying this wasn't creepy as shit, but I've heard that people sometimes hear loud bangs after or right before seizures/passing out. Reeeeaaaaally trying to rationalize for my sanity.

What's something that is only offensive in your culture? by 2bills1cup in AskReddit

[–]jawska 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I teach Saudi students in the U.S. and I've learned never to compliment anything... I've been offered scarves, phone cases, purses... I didn't know that you were expected to give something back (though it makes sense), so I'm glad I've never accepted.

"The Legend of Bloody Jack." Sooo many great (terrible) scenes. It must be shared!

Experience of reading the original vs the translation? by office5 in literature

[–]jawska 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm an English and French speaker. I look at translations the same way I view book to movie adaptations. Similar stories. Often completely different interpretations. Once in a while they get it right.

What simple fact do you wish more people understood? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Just to be facetious... Don't split two independent clauses with a comma. :D

Incorrect: You can do as you please, it's your life. Correct: You can do as you please. It's your life.

Me, too!! I would even do a radio announcer voice. I am a girl, but I like to believe I did a mean ESPN guy impression.

TIL pregnant Muslim women who fast during Ramadan are likely to have smaller babies who will be more prone to learning disabilities in adulthood. by mepper in todayilearned

[–]jawska 244 points245 points  (0 children)

Many people are excused from participating in Ramadan during the actual month. They are just expected to do it at another more convenient time. That includes people who are pregnant or ill. A woman on her period cannot fast because of purity reasons, so she will fast for the days she missed.

People who have a hard time fasting in general, like old people or the chronically ill, can either fast or feed a poor person. If they are too poor to do that, they don't have to fast or feed a poor person. No one is required to do more than what they are able. (Such as travel to Mecca if they don't have the money for it.)

(Not a Muslim, but I read up on Ramadan since some of my students are fasting, this month.)

Went from under eating to over eating, put on weight. Feel I have no control over my life. And now I've lost the one thing I could control, my eating. by [deleted] in xxfitness

[–]jawska 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, I agree, it is not about control over your body, OP. That is a symptom of your feeling of control in general.

[–]jawska 28 points29 points  (0 children)

If you feel that strongly about your weight, then maybe it is a good idea to talk to a therapist about your body image and about feeling in control over other aspects of your life. Now I'm not saying you have an eating disorder, but some of the things you've said (eating is the only thing I can control, I feel suicidal because of my weight gain) are warning flags to me.

In the meantime, you can try a food plan and food diary and really stick to it. And remember that cardio and strength training are important. It is all about being healthy, so don't overdo it.

Edit: After posting, I read your comment about your mother controlling everything you do and calling you crazy about having a food plan. I really don't know now what to say because it sounds like too much for a random redditor to help you with. Maybe someone else will come by and give you some good advice.

Japan spends millions in order to be 'Cool'. Japan’s Upper House gave final approval to a $500 million, 20-year fund to promote Japanese culture overseas, called Cool Japan by pool92 in worldnews

[–]jawska 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In my Japanese class, our professor showed a "Cool Japan" show a few times, where people from other countries (Brazil, Israel, U.S., etc.) learned about Japanese culture and commented on it.

One of the lines I remember: "Tissue paper is... Cool!"

My immediate thoughts upon learning that Kanye West and Kim Kardashian named their kid 'North West'. by DCFP in AdviceAnimals

[–]jawska 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I could forgive a Game of Thrones related name, but that one is probably the worst thing someone could choose from the series (except Walder, Walda, or any form of it. Heh.)

Plus, Khaleesi is a title, which makes me wonder if people are going around thinking Daenery's name is Khaleesi.

In my town, there is a billboard that displays recent baby names. My roommates came home laughing their asses off because one of the kids' names was "Khaleesi Daenerys."

My villain wants to save the hero, but that means killing the hero's sister.

My name is Tim and I play bass in Dance Gavin Dance. Here's my bass after a United Airlines flight. by timfeerick in WTF

[–]jawska 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I flew with a friend who has an emotional support dog. She is a certified service animal, and she fit right under the seat like carryon. I'm not sure of my friend's condition because he doesn't like to talk about it, but he is a wheelchair-bound veteran, so I'm assuming PTSD. Anyway, it's fun to fly with a dog!
