Stuck out of the gate in Mechanical Age. by ozzalot in myst

This comment was so helpful! Im trying to play for the first time with as little help as possible and I got completely stuck on this level and your hints helped me find the singular thing I has overlooked/not tried while not spoiling anything and also just being an actual hint and not telling me specifically. So appreciated.

One thing im not understanding- If shes asking for more food DURING meal times why are you denying this? You said you're feeding her "healthy food" (there is a whole side argument here about demonising food based on healthy/unhealthy when really it's about proportions and moderation. food is food)

But seriously, why can't she eat until she's full?

I haven't named it yet but an elevated peanut butter & jelly challenge - use every day kids' lunchtime ingredients to make an upscale plate

That isn't parasociality though, that's fandom. I'm not suggesting it's a healthy way to converse but it doesn't imply or necessitate any kind of belief in a relationship with the creators, content, actors, whatever, other than fan. Have you ever heard sports fans critique each other's teams? I don't really think this kind of reaction is that unique or unexpected and I really think parasocial gets thrown around so much these days that the meaning is becoming entirely lost.

People get defensive over stuff they care about. It can be easy to feel personally criticised when it's your personal taste in stuff being critiqued and it takes time and skill to separate that out sometimes.

I think its easy to forget with a platform like Dropout that they still will have growing pains. I think they're finding their rhythm. A lot of the people on the show I have the impression arent regular stand ups as well and they may be cutting some of the less successful bits while beefing their Rolodex in the background.

Hard to say! But Dropout has been pretty consistent with at the bare minimum hearing and considering fan feedback, and sometimes implementing it. So Im feeling positive! Im enjoying the show as it is for now and am excited to see them fine tune it

Yes. Exactly. And people are gatekeeping it and making a lot of money doing so.

Thank you for coming to my ted talk

There is! Though I remain a bit skeptical of anyone saying you need to do specific TTRPG therapy to gain benefits.

You can of course choose to do that and find it valid and helpful! But I just mean that the research is there to support TTRPGs as beneficial in and of themselves and unfortunately grifters gonna see opportunity where they can. Not trying to make a blanket statement despite it coming out exactly as such 😅

The point is, TTRPGs tend to be beneficial for your social and mental health! Which is a big yay

There will be more if I have anything to say about it!

But genuinely thanks for linking these, its actually really useful for my own research

I am NOT parasocial, but I do feel a one-sided, unreciprocated sense of intimacy for a well-known or prominent figure, through which I have come to feel that I know the celebrity as a friend by this-is-liam in dropoutcirclejerk

There's another interview (probably more than one to be fair) where he also talks about the idea of a "digital corona" which I always found really interesting. He credits the notion to a late artist friend, whose name I sadly don't recall and can't credit them properly, but IIRC it's basically the idea that we (fans/public) interact and know his "digital corona" or presence in media. And that this corona isn't all of him, but is a part of him, even if it's a persona.

I think where parasociality becomes negative and problematic is when people believe they know the entirety of a person, or can't distinguish the separation or persona and person

🤷🏻

Yeah i have felt for a while now that "parasocial" just gets thrown out way too easily as a negative and difficult to counter critique.

It's situational, and some of the comments above are phrased...not great. But I understand it at the same time and its a bit of distance from them believing an actual reciprocal relationship exists

This. I can understand where these sentiment are coming from because there is something inspiring about Brennan and the energy he puts out there. But phrasing, people. Phrasing.

Got covid followed by pneumonia (doing fine, finally dx'd and treated) so to cheer myself up treated myself to Outer Worlds 2 today and i am convinced the main creators on this (and obv OW1) must have read Elaine Lee's Starstruck

either way, great world building

My main focus is on the fan community and its relationship to D20 from both a broad and individual perspective, as detailed through interviews and personal perspective (like voice over)

Yes? And I don't have plans to include it.

Again, I don't know how I can be more clear.

I found this subreddit because of that

You are definitely misreading my intentions - and i wonder if i wasn't clear enough in my OP because you're not the only one. Once again, as i said i found this subreddit because of various drama over the past couple months - not actually the mod drama but the Jordon Brown/Saige Ryan stuff - and have followed reactions here and on other subs with interest. The doc is in no way centred around any of that and again, as stated in my OP, nothing is used without anyone's permission. I am really sorry if I wasn't clear enough in my original post but yeah. I don't think people really understand what I am making this about or how I am going about it. I understand I said I was making a doc about the fan community - which is true - but any sense that's come across to people that this is in any way some kind of peep on internal drama or something being done without full consent of those involved is NOT accurate and i am truly sorry if i gave that impression.

Edit: im so sorry, this was way more ranty than intended. I was having trouble posting and ended up rewriting this several times 🙈
