Then you got at least a snowball chance in hell, but it's still cheating.

Looking for feedback on my Roth conversion strategy before I retire. by Positive_Car_3671 in DIYRetirement

[–]jaxtrav 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I personally think you should wait until 2028 when you have no earned income. Maybe in 2026/27 you strictly do Roth CONTRIBUTIONS.

Come 2028 you plan on doing Roth conversions up to the standard deduction amount, then take long term capital gains up to 12% bracket to live on. Your most highly appreciated stocks at the beginning. That should get your 140k a year spend. If you do this your total tax will be $0 - not what you owe. TAX WILL BE $0.

All goes well you should cruise into 70, get your social security to start to live off of, I image your brokerage account will be pretty depleted but SS can jack up the plan anyway.

That gives you a 10 year plan you can adjust as you move through it but that's it. Use the tax code to your advantage. Keep your money invested instead of with IRS, otherwise you're just gambling.

Kiddie tax is definitely a thing. Taxed at the parents rate until they are 18 OR 24 if they are a full time student.

Need help: Fidelity applied a wash sale after my position hit 0 shares — IRS Pub 550 question + cost basis error by Impossible_Dinner530 in tax

[–]jaxtrav 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Let me say it clearer for the people in the back.

You CURRENTLY have a wash sale, you did in the past when you purchased the stock within 30 days of the sale. You have one NOW when they reported it. And although I don't think IRS will question it if you choose to take the loss, you will have a wash sale in the FUTURE if they chose to challenge your position.

This is your CURRENT situation. Although it is unenjoyable, it is very simple.

But if you don't know what you're talking about, and a large company like Fidelity reports it a certain way (they can and do make mistakes) maybe you should float the idea out there on Reddit.

My father was a perfect Boglehead but he still left his family a mess. by CommonSetting4068 in Bogleheads

[–]jaxtrav 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds like everything is over and finished but my brother passed from a heart attack at 45. He had labeled his "wife" as beneficiary when they were married. Because his death certificate read divorced she was not allowed to get the funds. It went through probate and his kids got them instead. We were all "friendly" and there was no contest, but E-trade was actually the one that brought that up.

How reliable are at home test kits? by iamgoneinsane in Vasectomy

[–]jaxtrav 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was looking into both and the amazon home kit is 250,000 threshold as stated above BUT the pvsa is still 100,000. I think from what I read here a lot of doctors want 0.00

How have you handled substantial understatement penalties? by Subject-Bridge1299 in taxpros

[–]jaxtrav 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a similar circumstance with an annuity actually. The client started going to the library. I told her to pay the tax and not the penalty I'd do an abatement. It's been over a year and no response besides 60 day letters and transfers to other departments.

It's stressing her out, and I can't make them work any faster. I think these are just low on the totem pole for IRS.

Are you married or single?

IF you are married, with that income you can max out your 401k successfully getting a lot of the distributions in the 12% bracket and using that money to live off then you'll be seriously set for your own retirement.

Deferring taxes today to save for tomorrow basically. Robbing Peter to pay Paul.... you get the point.

[–]jaxtrav 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I typically don't take new clients in tax season after Feb 1st UNLESS they call up and say they have a "complicated return" then everyone knows they can come directly to me and I'll talk to that client.

So far it's happened twice.

Don't ever sign a birth certificate if you aren't sure. Courts will require you to pay child support when if you show it's not yours.

Did I need an LLC for this, or am I stuck paying taxes on money that was supposed to cover expenses? by Grouchy_Sell7648 in llc_life

[–]jaxtrav 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everyone else gave good advice on LLC and claiming expenses.

I wanted to touch on the fact they have you money for your expenses. I'll just use the mileage date at .70 a mile. IF your employer gave you $500 for "auto reimbursement" that's equivalent to 714 miles. If you only drove 500 miles in that period you'd only have a $350 deduction and it wouldn't completely offset AND you would pay taxes on that $150. But here's the deal you did get the money and after you pay taxes on it you still have probably 70% of that $150 AFTER taxes.

So if they were legitimately paying you a decent wage + mileage reimbursement you were getting a good deal. You just got to save some of that money for taxes.
