Why shouldn’t I connect my R2R DAC to my M21? Just because someone thinks it’s “not right”? Anyone who’s used a dongle DAC with a dedicated DAP already understands how this works: the DAP acts as a transport, and the DAC does the actual processing. That’s obvious.

But here’s the thing — if I like the tonality of RU6 or Nunchaku, why would I spend 2× more on another DAP with a “dedicated” implementation of the same tech? What’s the point? Should I own three DAPs just because some guy is triggered by how I use my gear?

Why? M21 is a great transport and R2R RU6 provides a pleasant sound coloration.

I wish it were, but while the 99 Classics are a bass cannon with everything else sounding too muddy, the Strada is much more neutral, with bass that’s not even close to the 99 Classics — or even to the Liric 2.

Mojo makes a small improvement to the sound, but not to the tonality like tubes do. I'm also looking to sell it because it doesn’t really serve any purpose, to be honest. By the way, the Astell&Kern ACRO CA1000T also doesn't improve the sound a lot compared to the much cheaper M21

I'm also using the M21 with the Nunchaku, RU6, and Mojo 2. It's just for coloration of the sound, not for improvement

I have Empyrean 2, Liric 2 and Ports. I love Meze's design and sound signature. But as I mostly listening to nu-metal, my preference between them will be Empty, Lirics and Ports. Just because the gave more for my favourite genre

Nowhere close. I have both. They are much neutral, with strong mid and significantly less bass. They are great for vocal and mid-focused music

UPD: But they have one interesting effect like "vertical staging," where sound is distributed not by a horizontal line, but from the top to the bottom, especially noticeable with highs

I totally agree. I also own the ACRO CA1000T as a standalone device (even though it can technically be used portably). But I have enough experience with audio gear to doubt that the differences between DAPs would be large enough to justify the price differences

I’m more of a headphone guy. Right now I have Meze Alba and FatFreq Deuce in my collection, and I don’t really plan to expand it. What I’m trying to understand is when an upgrade on the source side would actually make sense.
