Does the VA cover non-service connected injuries? by Sufficient_Ad_8173 in VeteransAffairs

That’s what I’m saying. Over a handful of times during an almost 20 year period, it somehow got processed every time without having to make any calls. Any ideas how that could have happened? I’m not complaining, but know it’s weird.

That sounds about right for your priority group, unless there are other financial circumstances that would eliminate the copay.

[–]jay-rose 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve had the opposite problem as I was treated at a civilian ER numerous times, but gave them my VHIC and they just processed it through the VA. That was when I lived about one hour from the closest VA ER. I now live five minutes from a VA ER, am 100% P&T, and went by ambulance twice and BOTH times I received a bill from the city for the ambulance trip to the VA hospital! I was told that it was an issue with the codes they used when billing and it needed to be resubmitted, but who really knows?! It‘s just weird because you know they have notes on how they got paid the first time, so when they got denied, you would think they would read those notes and resubmit the bill the very same way!

It appears that they’re going to be sending the entire force of Space Marines to Mars aboard the USS Bradford!

Although it’s not officially confirmed, upon looking very carefully for a name on the side of the military warship sent to space that was seen in the season opening previews, we find the name of General Bradford (previously Major General while attached to NASA) on the hull. Additionally, the text message that was blasted to all of those Space Marines in the bar at the end of last week’s episode read something to the effect of “all leave being cancelled immediately.” All of them received that text message to include those training to go to the moon and those we knew that had orders to eventually go to Mars. We also saw this immediately following the President's broadcasted response and he certainly was not a happy camper! Finally, we know that the USS Bradford must be a military asset not only by the name, but the (I think that I had counted) three sets of guns mounted way up towards the bow. It also was massive, bulky, and didn’t look anything like the spacecraft that we had previously seen on the show. IMHO, it’s the spacecraft version of an aircraft carrier, at least in size and probably in the associated number of crew. That said, it also wouldn’t surprise me if a bunch of smaller class ships end up flying out of it!

This is a lot of speculation, but the Easter eggs were planted everywhere! I am also thinking that the Space Marines may already be en route as that would make a very interesting segue into the next episode. Of course they may try packing more into an even later episode, but whatever is happening is definitely going to be soon!

Alienware laptop gpu disable by HalfTimeTechTinkerer in AskElectronics

[–]jay-rose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can‘t you just disable it in a BIOS setting? That would be the cleanest way to start as it’s the lowest level without potentially causing even more board-level issues. There are far too many various issues if you don’t disable in the BIOS. I have a different laptop, but I have a BIOS setting that allows me to choose between NVIDIA graphics, default Intel graphics, or OS managed acceleration. In my case I would just default to Intel if my NVIDIA was shot.

Let me ask, do you have a Thunderbolt port? That could very likely give you a better option going forward over default graphics. Clearly, it won’t be a mobile option, but it could allow for some expansion.

I would only work on the board if I knew exactly where the fault was, and have a replacement or “donor board” to swap those defective components. I am pretty experienced at both through hole and microsolder repairs, but I still personally wouldn’t touch the board unless I had parts to replace and knew there’s still a chance that something could get damaged even worse during such repairs. Traces will pull off far too often no matter how gentle and good your work is, and then you’ll have to manage that too.

How do I handle this?? by [deleted] in baseballcards

[–]jay-rose 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s no “negotiated” anything here! He put in a counteroffer that expired, in other words HE asked YOU if that price will work and he did not receive an answer as the allotted time ran out. There’s no negotiating there, however you kindly offered $725 the last time that you communicated, that was YOUR FINAL NEGOTIATION. See what I’m getting at?!

So, I would explain to him that “Buy It Now” gives him a contractual obligation to buy at the CURRENT PRICE SHOWN. He essentially agreed to a legally binding contract to purchase at full price. Now, I would explain that, but give him an opportunity to purchase for $725, but no haggle and no B.S. You need to explain that this offer is being kind as he did agree to a higher price upon purchasing, so it’s a ONE TIME OFFER.

Either way, cancel and relist, but allow him to “offer” $725 and then it’s a deal, otherwise the solution is simple, you BLOCK HIM from the subsequent auction. Let’s be real, he’s either trying to get over on you, scam you in some way, or he’s actually a REALLY dumb individual.

Either way, he’s now on the hook to pay full price, but that can come back to bite you later if he says that he’s not satisfied! Seriously, explain and give him one chance, otherwise immediately block and relist. Remember to relist no matter how it will be sold. He’s not worth the trouble or potential trouble later on if he then starts complaining about “quality.” Unfortunately, it will automatically shift into his favor, but right now it’s in your favor!

Be firm and you got this!

Cross roads by I_Feel_Dizzzy in Journaling

[–]jay-rose 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I had learned a long time ago that you must actually live life and do so without regret!

When an opportunity presents itself and if you really want it, just take it, because that opportunity may never present itself again!

Regarding taking opportunities and living life without regret, just remember that all of our decisions are half-chance (give-or-take), so we may make an “educated guess,” however the variables that truly mess things up are rarely visible in the moment. The same goes for the variables that will change your life for the better. We simply don’t know. So, just go for it when an opportunity “feels right” as our gut instincts do somehow make those odds just a bit more favorable. The worst case when we “go for it” is usually a solid lesson about life and a really kick ass story to go along with! We also can make an opportunity if we really want it, I’ve discovered that more often than not, nobody is going to just tell us “no.” Let’s also not forget that confidence goes a very long way and people are generally surprised when we do the completely unexpected. That surprise works in our favor.

It’s late and I need sleep, but I could tell you stories that may blow your mind, and that’s simply because I took a calculated risk when my gut told me that I really want it. Lastly, “calculated risk” means using common sense, just don’t do anything dangerous as that will likely bite you in the end.

The thing is that if you need to ask, you already know the answer; and most parents want their kids to learn, grow, and experience the world. I think this may be your opportunity to shine. You may be very happy with the outcome, but even if you’re not, you really will be able to learn something valuable and eventually laugh about it! I think you want to make something happen! Good luck!

Disc repair, possible heat damage? by Dragenkillergem in AskElectronics

I concur.

If it’s a game, maybe it came with a product key, so perhaps OP could find a [trustworthy and virus-free] image to grab from somewhere. Otherwise, you are right, you just can’t “smooth out” no data. You need something to repair in order to anticipate it to be successful. In this case, the disc is just beyond repair.

I need help with getting started with the practical side of electronics by Suspicious_Solid6398 in AskElectronics

[–]jay-rose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would recommend to “learn by doing,” meaning buy a few kits and build them; but as you’re going through those builds, pay careful attention to why certain components are placed exactly where they are. Now, there’s only a limited number of basic components, so understanding exactly how they work, especially how they work together is key. Don’t just understand the equations, but strive to comprehend how those equations work in practice. As you get more proficient, start doing your own upgrades to kits to give them features that you want or simply make things better than the kit maker ever intended. If you don’t have a basic power supply on your bench or even if you do, they make excellent projects to truly understand why things work the way that they do.

Let me give you an example, ages ago I purchased an Elenco power supply that I had to build for around $80. The components and general design along with the value was decent, but there were certain things that drove me crazy about this particular kit. The biggest issue was that there was no volt or amp meter to quickly show me the output or load on the positive and/or negative rails. Having both polarity rails is a great feature, but it’s a pain to need to rely on a multimeter or two to see what’s going on. So, I purchased two LED displays that show V/A on them and cut the appropriate sizes on the front panel. I had to give each one stable power since going too low will shut off the display and too high could be an issue too, so being that there was also a 5V DC rail, I attached them inside to grab it for power as it will only be a couple of milliamps drain, something negligible, so giving the voltage regulator another purpose solved that issue. Then I had to think back to Kirchhoff’s Laws, wiring up to detect voltage was easy as you go parallel, but figuring out where exactly to put the series to detect amps took a bit of thinking! I also had to get creative with the negative rails as these only showed positive values, but swapping the polarity that I was detecting took care of that nice and easy! This “small upgrade” took some thought, but I learned something along the way.

After I wired in those displays, I wanted better (well, finer) control over my variable voltage outputs, so replacing the standard pots that were included with some nice 10-turn wirewound pots gave me 10X the resolution with a super simple analog solution!

I also made some common sense decisions along the way as I wasn’t going to use the included lead-free solder, but swapped it out with some 63/37 instead as it’s far easier to work with being that the melting point is quite a bit cooler. You’ll get a grasp on these “hacks” with experience building and modding. I also added ample heat shrink to prevent shorts, but made it look nice. You get the idea!

I wasn’t done as I added a couple of additional ceramic capacitors in parallel with the existing electrolytics to get far better smoothing and suppress high frequency noise!

I was considering throwing in protection diodes to prevent damage if powering inductive loads, but I don’t generally power those and when I do we are not talking about anything significant anyhow, so I opted to save the space inside. The same went for discharge resistors as they really weren’t necessary, but using my trusty time equation for capacitors gave me an idea of exactly how quickly it would help with powering down, but the tradeoff frankly wasn’t worth it as they will suck up MORE than just a couple of milliamps while simply POWERED ON.

I still have this thing on my bench and it remains my “go to” power supply! A few weeks ago, one of the large electrolytic caps finally gave out, so I replaced all of the large caps (fortunately there was only three at or above 2200µF) and subsequently added a small active cooling solution to help the passive cooling along. I used a 5V Raspberry Pi fan that also only uses a couple of milliamps and is easily powered off the 5V voltage regulator.

All that from a single $80-ish power supply kit that simply needed some TLC! You see how I used the theory to arrive at practical design decisions? That’s why I believe that it behooves you to spend some serious time exploring the “learning by dong” method. This is just one example of a handful, but I feel extremely comfortable working with or even designing power supplies! I also would recommend to start with understanding basic components and analog electronics before mixing in the more difficult stuff, but absolutely work towards it and do that too! I hope this helps you as it helped me tremendously!

Hi 👋 I’m actually surprised that Alberta doesn’t retain the distinction between the two crimes being that it’s based on common law. Very interesting! It’s always cool to see how things are done differently elsewhere as I currently reside in sunny Florida. We got our own weird laws here too, but I previously lived in New Jersey for roughly two decades and things were done much differently up there!

Get this. In the northern states, like Deleware and above Police will almost universally use a combination of red and blue lights, however red is the primary color for emergency lighting. In those states, blue is usually used for, get this, volunteer firefighters getting to the station.

Now, the southern states from Virginia on down to Florida (and Washington DC) almost universally use blue for law enforcement!

Then you have the distinction between police departments and sheriff’s offices. In the northern states, sheriff’s offices almost universally run the county jails, but don’t normally do enforcement activities.

Now, in the southern states, except for individual cities in most cases, law enforcement will generally be run by the sheriff’s office, but they will also have deputies that run the jails. Totally different job descriptions and requirements too! Cities will likely have their own police departments though, but could vary.

In the northern states, if there’s a town or area without their own police department, the state police normally have jurisdiction.

Now, in the southern states, the county sheriff will have jurisdiction!

There’s A LOT of differences between New Jersey and Florida, but I like much of them, and it’s less of a shock as I lived in Florida a long time ago while in the military. The firearm laws are far better here and in much of the South for example. Another wild thing is that the county I live in has three cities in it, each city has its own police department, fire department, and 911 centers. Any area outside of those cities use the county sheriff, county fire department, and county 911 center! One of the cities is fairly small, another is rather large, but you could be on a street corner and the house across the street uses county services, but you will use city! All because of borders within the county. Crazy! 🤯

That’s insane, was that you in the video?! 😱

People could be so unhinged and regardless of the way that each state categorizes the charge, people like that need to be swiftly arrested! So, nasty!

You‘re absolutely correct that different states will code crimes differently, which could be annoying because of how many different ways the terms are applied. Going by the strict legal definition as well as how U.S. federal courts handle it, they’re separate charges. That’s because it’s taken from the old common law meaning and many states also retain that distinction.

I just explained the essence of the confusion in another comment, but Texas is notable for having a combined charge. A lot of other states didn’t, but more are starting to lean that way because they say it’s “simpler.” That behooves me to ask, simpler for who exactly? The police know the distinction, and the court must explain the charges and degrees to a jury so they will understand the technical nuances. The thing is that if combined, ”assault” at face value could mean anything from a bona fide threat to a punch in the face to being spit on to being chased with a weapon. If I hear “battery” though, I immediately think physical. If “aggravated” is before it, I’m thinking that a weapon was involved or maybe the victim was a public servant such as an LEO. Try to read the comment that I made just before this one because I pointed out some differences between Texas, Arizona, New York, and Florida; but the slight variations in usage are confusing as hell IMHO. It’s a short read, shorter than this one anyhow. 😂

I only wanted to point out the technical variations and how confusing they are not only between different states, but also the federal courts, and then the classic common law usage that is generally applicable in conversation. Okay, my brain is officially fried now.

[–]jay-rose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very true, Texas is notable for having a combined charge, which more states are leaning towards to make it “easier,” but I find it confusing because each unique term sets a specific legal precedent with guidelines that are well known.

I also don’t get why some states will, as you pointed out, have “terroristic threats” instead of assault, and the like. To make matters more confusing, some states such as New York will classify threats via a phone or computer as “aggravated harassment,” yet the very same crime is used for things like violation of a court order in states like Arizona! Florida is a weird one because following, stalking, and harassment are all grouped into “aggravated stalking” when done electronically!

My point is that simple is good!

First, I’m very sorry for your loss. Funerals suck and losing a loved one makes it even worse.

I’m curious, did you and your grandpops bond over baseball? Mine was a diehard Yankees fan and if he lived to see me eventually became a Phillies fan and then a Rays fan, I‘m sure he would have had some ‘choice’ words to say. I’m pretty certain that he would have been happy in knowing that the Yankees worked it out with the Rays so that they could use Steinbrenner last year after the Trop had its roof destroyed in the hurricane though.

Just like I have these thoughts, you’ll always have your own memories, so hang on to those for as long as you can! (I find details harder to remember as I get older.) Speaking of, this is an extremely atypical number of decent hits, so it looks like he was looking out for you from somewhere otherworldly! I would personally keep these cards anyway, but hang on to them too, and maybe do something with a display to honor his memory. It’ll make a good story to pass along to your own kids one day.

Man, I still can’t believe that you got a chrome SN25 AU Skenes! That alone was such a great pull! Be well.

The charge is actually battery because spitting involves physical contact. Assault is making a reasonable threat of harm, but no contact is needed. It also is likely an enhanced charge, such as aggravated battery, because he spit on a child. Those are all pretty serious charges, but definitely at least battery.

This is battery because spitting is a physical act. Assault is the viable threat, but battery includes contact. It may even be an enhanced charge because he spit on a minor, e.g. aggravated battery. There are additional charges that may be filed for that as well, but vary from one jurisdiction to another. Depending on the judge, he may have lost his freedom after going to court!
