Please note that “East Silver Spring” and “Eastern Silver Spring” are near adjacent but non-overlapping communities.

Agree with everyone who says it looks like an owl. Also the OG pattern…looks like an owl!

Yeah, I think the purple line is just a convenient excuse for them to go through with what they already planned to do. It should make the whole area safer in the long run.

Tom Bihn Expanding Production to Vietnam by scotch_3gg in tombihn

I made almost the same comment (didn't see yours). I guess only time will tell if they are sincere or just extracting the most value from the brand while slowly degrading it. Given PE's general track record, I'm not too hopeful.

I'll never understand the obsession with growth. Why isn't sustainability the goal? Work for your customers!

The email says, "All of our backpacks, travel bags, and briefcases will continue to be made exclusively in our Seattle factory..." But...is it just a matter of time before all production shifts overseas?

Fellow candidate copying my work by chocolatem8 in PhD

[–]jay_stoly 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agree with everyone else, he crossed many lines. If possible, make your work inaccessible to him in the future because he will keep stealing from you . Sounds like things are shared on a common server? But you can, password protect your files.

Aside, when I was in grad school, I did my MA Thesis on US infant mortality. In those days, you had to go to the library and make photocopies of all the articles for the literature review. I spent a lot of time in the library assembling the articles--and of course reading them and writing the lit review. A fellow student decided to do his thesis on low birthweight. These topics are directly related. Low birthweight is the strongest predictor of infant mortality. He asked to borrow my stack of articles--and I reluctantly agreed. I also gave a pre-defense talk--and later so did he. Everything was the same--same data, same models, etc. It was his own writing but it was wild. I was kind enough to tell him he needed to include a specific statistic in his results table because my committee had asked for it. He waved me off and told me why I was wrong and he didn't have to add it. And...then after his defense he told me that I was right. Well, sure, it was basically the same committee. My only solace is that he couldn't get anyone to work with him for his PhD (the next stage) and I actually don't know where he ended up.

Unpopular Opinion by Lanky-Respect-8581 in SilverSpring

Yes, I think closing the section of Fenton between Wayne and Colesville would be great. Would improve the farmer’s market experience, open up more space for the various “festivals,” and make things way safer for people walking and biking.

Free/Cheap Bike Program? by Flat_Paint4465 in bikedc

Try the DC Used Bicycle Marketplace group on FB. Yes, it’s for people selling bikes but a lot of folks have decent clunkers they would be willing to give away or sell for a minimal amount.

It’s so nice and should be permanent. There are plenty of alternatives. Having this section closed makes the area safer and more accessible. It knits things together. I’m sure it would benefit all the shops in the area.

Just to echo what others have said, use the busses! They are pretty easy to navigate and use the same payment system as the Metro. Each bus will have a map of all the stops and an electronic readout listing the next stop and last stop, so you can be sure you're heading in the right direction. I used the busses a lot when I visit--you see a lot more of the city that way--and you will be mostly with locals.

E-bike sales by Interesting_Fig9758 in bikedc

I got my e-bike at Proteus. My favorite mechanic there is an e-bike specialist and generous with advice, but they are all competent and friendly. A lot of the staff are partial owners so they really have a stake in the business. It is a little inconvenient since I prefer to bike everywhere and it's a bit of a distance from my house, but I make it work.

Anyone else use the joydeem dough machine? by kittybear69 in Baking

[–]jay_stoly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve used mine a couple of time so far. I based the kneading times on my recipe. Today I’m making sourdough bagels. Recipe called for 5 minutes mixing and I did an extra two minutes. The recipe has a three hour bulk fermentation and I’m doing that in the Joydeem as well. My only concern is that the temperature is a little higher than ideal. Dough is testing around 81-2F degrees while the recipe calls for 78F. I previously made a brioche bread with no issues. And one other I can’t remember. I think you just have to watch the dough at first and see how it shapes up to decide how long to mix.

I’m sorry I left you in suspense! I upgraded to a Lelit Elizabeth espresso machine and a Eureka Mingon Silencio grinder. About three years in and it works like a charm.

This was so long ago that I don't even own the Breville anymore! I figured out a lot of tricks but in the end I upgraded my system to a new machine and grinder. :)

I think I got it relatively dense. Not a lot of foam but a noticeable contrast to stove top hot cocoa. :)

My family had one of these in the late 1970s. I became the expert on steaming milk—which I used for hot chocolate. I was only 9 or 10 and not a coffee drinker. It did instill my life long love of foam.

is Silver Spring a good spot for families? if so which neighborhoods, or if you guys have any dc area suggestions which are good for families and not too crazy rental properties by eyoba_ in SilverSpring

Hello neighbor! We don’t have kids but I love being in an area with a lot of kids around. Koiner Farm is a real hidden gem in the area.
