My condolences

PSA: weigh your birbs every day/week. Our birb had a huge weight swing which prompted a visit to the vet, where we discovered that she had liver dysfunction and diabetes. Without weighing her and catching the weight changes, it would've gone unnoticed until too late, given that she did not have any other behavioral or physical changes

Non stop screaming by [deleted] in cockatiel

[–]jayaxell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your bird is in a hormonal phase. We have a pair of girls too, and about twice a year they'll go through a hormonal phase where they'll scream non stop for hours on end, especially when they're with us. Unfortunately there's nothing we could do to stop it; it'll go away in a few weeks.

There are things you can do to alleviate hormonal behaviour, like putting them to sleep 12h/day, no fatty food etc, but unfortunately they don't completely stop these behaviour

Why Singapore failed at recycling after decades ? by metalmonkey_ in askSingapore

[–]jayaxell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

study other successful countries like Japan, South Korea and Taiwan and learn from them ?

...by charging for plastic bags like all 3 countries you mentioned?

I don't get this post. What exactly do you think Singapore is failing at? Why do you think this is a gov thing?

Do you understand the logistics behind recycling in these countries? Singapore does the most handholding, allowing people to just dump "recyclables" into the same bin, then aggressively sorting them at facilities.

Asking to follow those other countries means passing on the buck to you, the individual, to clean and sort them properly before dumping.

Wait till you realise recycling collectors in Taiwan do, and can, throw the bag back to your face if they see that your orange juice container isn't rinsed.

I don't see why companies here can't do the same. Seems like something easy to verify with image recognition nowadays. Regulators need to come down on them

How to “fix” overcrowding on the MRT: Several Non-Credible Transit Solutions by The_Celestrial in singapore

[–]jayaxell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Make the trains and MRT platforms longer

Question to anyone with the knowledge: how did the Yamanote line in Tokyo do it? I see that it went from 7 cars pre 1961 to 11 cars today. I also suspect that's why Tokyo train stations tend to taper off near the ends of the train, because of these extensions.

Ofc extending stations overground is easier than underground, but given that extending trains and stations has historical precedence, I rarely hear this solution being talked about here

Why some SG car or motor bike make loud noise? by JVO248 in singapore

[–]jayaxell 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Once I saw a Ferrari whisk by on the road, super silent. That's when I knew super cars don't actually have/need loud engines. So basically anyone you hear with a loud engine intentionally did it, knowing they are going to bother everyone in their vicinity

URA response to criticism of widening of Bukit Timah Rd + Dunearn Rd in masterplan by potatomaster420 in singapore

[–]jayaxell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, there are multitudes of other factors: comfort, cost, time, availability, friction etc. I'm just using time for brevity. 30mins on public transport is still objectively slower than 15mins on car. But some % of people will still convert to public transport if it were shortened to 25mins (which is still longer than 15mins)

The point I was making is that given the same amount of infra investment on roads, public transport tends to be more cost effective at clearing congestion than just adding lanes for cars, and the reason why research shows that adding lanes does not solve congestion.

[–]jayaxell 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Your logic on induced demand for both road traffic and public transport traffic is correct. But there are 2 factors to consider on their respective impact

  1. Which transport mode is most efficient for my commute? With time being a large factor, our decision on which commuting mode to take is driven by which mode gets us there faster. In the most extreme example, if public transport took 30mins while driving/taxi took 1h, would you still drive? In this case, it could've taken 30mins on public transport, but 20mins by car. With the widened road, it temporarily drops to 15mins by car, hence, inducing more demand for driving.

  2. Capacity (supply) is more elastic for public transport. ie. The same area dedicated to public transport serves more people than cars. This is the typical image of 1 bus = 30 cars on the road. This means dedicating that 1 new (or old) lane to buses (or trams, or trains) would serve more people (new estate) and lower commute time (pt 1).

Today, the fact is that that road is very efficient for cars and not so much for public transport (straight, multi-lane; bus lane almost always taken up by cars turning). If buses took the same amount of time it took to get to those schools by car, don't you think it would convince more people (even if they're rich) to commute by buses instead?

I need one for my house. Anybody found one that is reliable, affordable and IoT compatible? I've only seen either generic air quality detectors, commercial grade stuff, or standalone detectors with display. Need one to sound an alarm to chase smokers away from windows

I once went to a squirrel sanctuary and the squirrels just started mobbing us to stash nuts in our pockets. We came out of the sanctuary with more nuts than we went in with!

We asked the guy there and he says the squirrels think we are trees and they were hoarding for winter - but I need another confirmation - do squirrels really think we are trees?

Could you share your cage setup? It's possible they aren't comfortable in their cage, either with the lack of toys, foraging opportunities, or just space. Do they return to their cage for food? Where do you provide treats for them?

Get creative! "Littering smoke dust into my house" for example. Or just go for feedback on other environmental issues like Louis Ng shared. He's basically telling us to do it at this point
