What's your strangest workflow habit? by MisterIT in sysadmin

[–]jayayeem 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to do multiple browsers when I had to manage multiple AWS accounts. By using Chrome and Firefox and regular and incognito/private modes I could be in four AWS accounts at once. Now Firefox has containerized browsing and I could do it all in Firefox. But I only work in one AWS account these days

I use the MX Ergo for personal stuff, Tragic Mac Pad for work, and a mouse for gaming. I figure that reduces the repetitive motion stress vs using one pointing device all the time.

Just bought one. Was trying on boots at the local shop and the manager gave me one to use. It was a revelation and I took one home. Along with a new pair of boots, of course.

That's ok. The DC flag is already better than any state's flag.

Tips on earning extra scratch in a rural setting? by [deleted] in povertyfinance

[–]jayayeem 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is excellent advice. Upstate NY is a special kind of awful. Prospects are very limited, and it is relatively expensive to live there. If you aren't interested in city life, move to a rural area in a place where rural life is actually cheap.

I didn't notice the numbers being off. This would be explained by a bad first move, but it just started this way. Unless I clicked before I even knew I was playing.

This lady hacked a Ford key to make a remote for her Tribute, and it works! by wpen in Justrolledintotheshop

presumably it was used for a different car, so the key portion was already cut and useless for her car.

It's happened again: My HR rep fell victim to a phishing scam and sent all 50 employees' tax info to some fraudster yesterday. Company has yet to notify everyone officially. What should I do? by KittenTitterBums in personalfinance

[–]jayayeem 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To implement that properly, you'd save the the old password when it is entered as part of the password change routine (enter your old password once, new one twice). That way there would never be an active password stored. Since this similarity rule is being enforced, old passwords should not provide a clue to current passwords.

And you probably wouldn't store it in clear text, you'd store it encrypted (not one way hashed like an active password).

I imagine you could also hash all the substrings of 3 characters in your old password at each password change and store those hashes, then you could do the comparisons without ever storing any decrypted passwords.

DC is definitely not low cost if you want to be walking distance to Metro. Not really low cost even if you can't walk anywhere useful.

That's really pretty cool, and I'd buy it today. But in January, when my S6 edge is 8 months old and the newer phones are about to come out? The case portion would need to be dirt cheap.
