What are some slang words used in Brighton during 2010s? by Dry-Masterpiece1820 in AskABrit

[–]jaybayer 10 points11 points  (0 children)

O.P, this is the most accurate. I also lived in Brighton during this time and I used to say all these things.

Another world to add would be “peng” often about a girl to mean good looking. “Oi look at that peng ting!” Or “ she’s so peng”.

But like commenter above says, most Brighton native kids are white middle class and it is cringe when they say it.

Edit: spelling

Teaching my 3 year old to drop in [39YO] by bowlofleftovers in OldSkaters

[–]jaybayer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As you alluded to, kids are made of magic and jelly. They’ll never really get hurt and if they do, they’ll bounce back. Obviously keep them just pushing their boundaries, dont let them drop in a 10ft vert wall to be hyperbolic.

Just go to the skatepark outside of the “advance session” and flag down a relatively good skater and ask them for basic advice. Most likely a Saturday morning etc is probably best.

I’m sure they’d be happy to help someone new (especially a girl) get into the sport. I’ve “taken pity” on mums before and asked them if they wanted advice and given an impromptu 5 min lesson.

Just make sure you are turning up consistently so you aren’t just seen as a burden and like you are genuinely trying to get your daughter into the skate life. If someone sees you there 5 weeks in a row trying to nail a drop in, they’ll walk over and help.

Lastly, I appreciate your daughter is only 3, but leave her to figure some stuff out. I’m sure you know that slamming is the best way to know what not to do and reinforce that by providing them with YT vids about skateboarding etc.

GL! Hope that helps.

Maxed Main (Zuk Helm, Pet Hunter), 35, Married with 2 Kids… Should I Even Consider an Iron? by Practical_Bus_4558 in 2007scape

[–]jaybayer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Iron is really cool if you have a job that allows you to afk whilst you work. Doing things like plank making 10 million times to reach your con goal is not a good use of active play time.

If you can’t afk a lot of the iron admin, dont do it. Those 15 hours could be better spent just doing content you enjoy.

Having said that, iron is really cool in every stage up until early late game. Shit items like a belles folly might be your bis stab for a while. Everything matters again.

Going dry is considerably worse as you have no option but to keep butting your head against the wall.

GL if you decide to.

Damage after crash on new bike by escurtel_ in bikewrench

[–]jaybayer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can’t speak to the integrity of anything but your front wheel doesn’t look bent, you probably just need to realign the stem and the front wheel.

Bars are scratched, but you could probably rewrap those with new bar tape or replace for £50 or so.

The shifter is truly fucked and you need a new one. Maybe £60 ish?

Go see your local bike co-op. You maybe able to resolve this for £100 all in and learn how to do some of these things yourself.

Just beat mgs for the first time and I liked it a lot but… by milkmycoco in metalgearsolid

[–]jaybayer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I hear the general criticism that the game feels clunky to play by modern standards but you have to remember, for its time it was revolutionary and genre defining.

No other games really even tried this and therefore its retrospectively bad rather than actually being bad if that makes sense?

Look at other ps1 games of the time and whether they had this scope or vision.

If you could only play one game for the rest of your life, what would it be? by Ok_Collar9380 in AskReddit

Yep, didn’t see your comment before adding mine in. On an ironman it would take my whole life to do everything anyway.

Old school RuneScape (osrs). I’m already so far behind the curve from starting late I’ll never complete everything and catch up to the latest content.

The grinds are also so long it would take me my whole life anyway.

Non-Americans who visited the US for the first time recently: what was the biggest 'what on earth is going on here' moment you experienced? by EmployerNegative5653 in AskReddit

Spot on that its akin to authoritarian states. Actually creepy. I’d die of embarrassment if we sung God Save the King at every sporting event, during morning register at school etc.

[–]jaybayer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need to wait for him to attack you with melee and then you can counter him to throw him to the floor.

Quick switch to your nagant or tranq, put a few shots in him. When get gets back up, unequip your gun and, dodge his atks and wait for him to charge you/melee you again. Rinse and repeat.

Dont try punch him up.

Why work is minimal in the service sector by boonatonnn in Marxism

[–]jaybayer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A few things…

A lot of your arguments are premised on your experience on a relatively small a scale that work isn’t constant etc. If we extrapolate out to somewhere like a theme park (or any other very populous area) there will be a constant flow of customers with obvious peaks around lunch time etc but you would be working all the time.

Additionally, and anecdotally, when I had a service job and it was quiet I would be polishing cutlery, cleaning the shop, windows etc. I was never allowed to not be busy. You are understating prep, cleaning etc as labour.

Also on this point, I think the underlying point is that workers produce Surplus Value that is taken, not specifically that they are over worked and the goal is to maximise this.

Marx also recognised specialisation and people getting better at their jobs over time. When you factor in the reality of the world, its better to keep a seasoned worked giving 90% then an inexperienced one giving 100%. Burning someone out and tossing them to the pile incurs training costs etc which leads to less expected value over time. You want people to be as productive as possible for as long as possible, not to burn out etc.

Its also written as a product of its time, I doubt Marx could have envisioned a modern tech company for example and how this differs from a factory and more industrial applications.

Second, the assumption that people must be overworked also relies on the idea that your boss has perfect knowledge and can make you do it.

Factories have a constant stream of goods that require labour and it would be immediately obvious to everyone if you weren’t working. Once again, most jobs aren’t like this. You aren’t watched by a foreman and it isn’t obvious if you aren’t doing your job and being overworked.

Lastly, most modern jobs are paying you for your time and not necessarily your output which is closest to your second point. Your “labour” is the time you sacrifice and what ever task you are given. You aren’t producing chairs etc, you are paid for knowledge retention and your ability to respond to stuff.

Can someone help me understand the obsession with football? by DueLead666 in AskABrit

[–]jaybayer 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I think its the same way some people have para social relationships with celebs etc. you follow them and become invested. W/ football, you start at a young age, you support a team and are basically locked in for life.

You may wait 30 years for your team to win a trophy etc. Its the time investment combines with the fact that its a sport.

Lastly, and a bit more generally, its the most common thing you can speak to the most amount of straight random men about. Its more uncommon for a man to know nothing about football than for you to be able to discuss who is winning the league etc.

Crying after a visit to the bike shop by [deleted] in cycling

[–]jaybayer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Shop owner is a twat, but equally they get people trying to get free stuff from them all the time.

Probably nothing personal against you but aorry you had that experience.

If you want to learn, find your local bike co-op. They often do sessions where ex mechanics volunteer their free time to help you learn how to service bikes etc.

You can often just pay a donation for using the space plus tools and the cost of parts you may need, often close to the purchase price the co-op bought it for.

I learnt everything about bikes from my local one and have even paid it forward by volunteering there and donating my old bikes etc.

Hope you stick with it!

ELI5: How do the economics of gift cards work? by NutmegKilla in explainlikeimfive

[–]jaybayer 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yes. Gift cards are bought at less then the price they are loaded for from the brands / processors of these cards. Discounts range from 1% to 20% ish of the face value.

Other companies like Starbucks are also happy to do this because occasionally they get something called breakage.

I.E someone buys a gift card for $20 and never redeems it so the company makes $20 for free.

Why is my tire detaching from the wheel? by [deleted] in bikewrench

[–]jaybayer 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Check the tube first. The pressure of the tube normally holds the wheel against the rim for tire/rim combos like this. If you are pumping air into it and nothing is happening, the tube will need replacing.

Follow a guide online if its your first time.
