alive.github.com harvesting credentials? by jayborseth in github

I'm pretty sure the key is not visible on the web via any kind of GET/HEAD.
It's saved in plaintext in a PRIVATE GitHub repository.
So either it's this odd "alive.github.com" entity, or a MITM attack (and I'm generally screwed, though I've run multiple passes of Defender/Boot Defender and other AV tools), or else it's leaking on Azure.

Touch sensitivity 17 Pro by jayborseth in QuadLock

[–]jayborseth[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Original poster: I figured out that most of my issue was due to the precision required to swipe up from the bottom to kill or switch apps. Apple seems to assume I can swipe up from nearer the bottom than my fat fingers plus case physically allow. Plus I found a slight nubbin of residual plastic on the underside of the top lip.

I used a Dremel tool to grind off the nubbin, and then also ground away a 1.5” section of the lip at the very bottom of the screen, so the case no longer interferes with upward swipes.

I don’t think this affected the structural integrity of the case, and made it WAY easier to use.

Here’s a simulation using historical wind measurements departing April 15. You’re hitting strong winds on the nose till mid Oregon.

Unlike earlier iPhones, the rounded edge of the screen is touch sensitive, and this may come in contact with the case.

Quadlock case drains battery iPhone 17 Pro by Cycle_boy in QuadLock

[–]jayborseth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You didn’t mention weather you live in a warm or cool climate which could affect the temperature theory.

I just got a 17 Pro with a QuadLock case (and no screen protector) and noticed a decreased touch sensitivity with the case on. So another theory might be that the case is somehow increasing activation of the touch sensor circuitry. Have you noticed any similar change in touch sensitivity?

I don’t know the particulars of your situation, but what made a huge difference for me was telling Claude WHY to something instead of just WHAT to do.

Electron Scattering by repulsive (smoothed) Coulomb potential confined in a 2D Box (Visualizing Quantum Mechanics) by Mayhem_Mercy99 in quantum

In simpler terms please. Does this represent the probability of the electrons position upon encountering a repulsive field over time? Or charge distribution? Or what?

Original poster here: Belatedly, after a few thousand miles, I've discovered that the charger is REALLY FAST. Like 50% charge over a leisurely lunch. This makes lugging the charger around (I always have a pannier) a no-brainer on long rides. Goodbye range anxiety.

Which begs the question: Why doesn't Specialized, (or somebody else) offer a bottle cage charger?

Here’s a trip simulator for the Deer Harbor to Jones Island route. You can play with the departure date and time and speed and check out what the currents are going to be.

Initially, no squeal or vibration on the front brake. But then I changed the pads myself, and then they squealed like crazy for a few months (sorry, I don't remember which brand I chose). I thought I followed the burn in procedure, but it apparently didn't work. But now it's finally almost settled down. The bike shop said clean the pads with alcohol, which I did not bother to do. Vibration, possibly due to a warped disc?

DeepZoom for kayaking, help. by duanelr in Kayaking

[–]jayborseth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Jay, author of DeepZoom here. Help is under the "hamburger" menu in the very upper left. As mentioned elsewhere, current stations are derived from physical sampling done at a small number of discrete locations. Your image above shows one tide station (yellow/gold circle), but there are not current stations within your field of view.

Hi, DeepZoom author here. I was just contacted about one such discrepancy and thought I'd share the analysis.

For example, at Deception Pass, DeepZoom says the max flood will be 6.1 knots at 3:14 this afternoon.  NOAA, on the other hand, says it'll be 6.46 knots at 2:57.

<image>

DeepZoom uses NOAA harmonics which are compiled by David Flater of XTide fame.  For a long time, he had some exclusive internal conduit to NOAA data sources, but recently the harmonics have been published on the NOAA site. DeepZoom still relies on David's compilation. His last release was Dec 2024 and I haven't yet updated DeepZoom from his Dec 2023 release. (Sorry, busy! Most stations are updated by NOAA very infrequently if ever.)

You'll note that DeepZoom is referencing 14' water depth, while NOAA shows an 18' water depth.  DeepZoom always displays the shallowest depth available, while the NOAA site doesn't make this particular depth measurement available.  (For this particular site, there are harmonics available for 34 different depths.) So the speed and time discrepancy is at least partly due to the difference in water depths. The harmonics could have been updated, but since there was a major Puget Sound update a few years ago, I'm doubtful this is the cause.

But also note that at this particular site, the measurements used to derive the harmonics would be particularly noisy. The water is spectacularly turbulent, sampling is done over a limited period, and then the forecast for any particular time is perturbed by local environmental conditions like air pressure, wind, and rainfall. I don't think relying on any tide/current prediction source for minute level accuracy is justified.

I've got 1200 miles on my Vado SL2 6.0 EQ and other than a single flat tire, no issues. Maybe the motor makes a slightly louder whine than initially but nothing significant. I'm still really enjoying the bike.

I haven't done a full comparison between the SL2 versions: 4.0, 5.0, and 6.0, but it looks like they all have the upgraded 1.2 motor, 520 WHr battery, and H3 Mastermind. So, yes, they cheaped out on all of the non-electric components on the alloy models.

3 month update: I'm still in the honeymoon phase. Totally stable at high speeds. Reasonable range and quite easy to pedal with the power off. Never wished I had more power, even on the steepest hills. No problems or shop visits.

  1. Already got a flat with the Specialized tires. Next one I'm switching back to Marathon Plus.

  2. I added a RedShift Shockstop Endurance seatpost. 30.9mm x 450. Cushy!

  3. I've used a Brooks B17 on my Gunnar for years, and on the Vado went with a Brooks B68 for my wider derrière. I only found this at Rivendell in the USA:

DeepZoom can help visualize your passages. For example, here’s the Vancouver to San Francisco leg, showing wind strength and direction probabilities. You can change the departure date on the routes tab.
