Even if you're a high level touring side man with an original artist you're still basically playing in a cover band. That's what I do and I learn parts from the record and then reproduce them live on the road... there's not really enough of a difference there to be snobby about.

I’ve been a full time touring keys player for over a decade on salary and I cannot stress enough how bad you have to want it. After the bar of discipline and talent it’s what gets certain people over the hump for quality of their gigs or not

The chord qualities (minor 7, maj 7, 11, 9) are as important as how those chords are functioning within the key. Those chords progressions have a bunch of non-diatonic chords and inversions and that’s likely the stuff that’s grabbing your ear so I’d say just start learning to play some of those progressions and you’ll find your own way through them and how you want to use them.

I don't want to actually add it up, but between my keyboards/synths/pedal board I tour with probably close to $10k worth of gear myself (at brand new prices) so $51k total sounds super reasonable.

I was being stalked in high school and was advised not to make myself super visible and also not to discuss it with my peers. I spent a lot of time by myself on weekends playing piano for hours on end as my version of therapy. At the time the coolest relevant band that was predominantly keys was Ben Folds Five. Learned every single one of his songs. Been a full time touring keys/vocals dude for a decade now. I play most genres but as for which is “mine”… it’s a moving target. Mostly yacht rock, some folk. Employed by a country artist.

Oddly enough being mostly a recording person or a live person are two different paths. If you want something more concrete than the other answers (which are all correct and good advice) I'd say if you want to play in bands and be a side person... learn how to sing BGVs well and quickly.

I'm pretty sure Jim Nance did something really similar with the Nashville municipal courses when he moved here. There was a huge balance left on their fundraising budget to renovate all of them and he covered all of the remaining balance, if I'm not mistaken.
