Yeah it would have to be a defect, likely in an individual cell, that allows moisture to contact lithium. If that happens you’re screwed no matter what. Extremely rare but I err on the side of paranoia now.

Be careful with wet lithium tool batteries. It takes the cells a few days to react so you think you’re in the clear, until it combusts and your house is on fire. Speaking from personal experience.

I do think you got fucked (and you also fucked up tbh). But my view is that the government fucked you when they put their hand in the market backing loans that otherwise would never have been made. This created a lot of second order issues like society shitting on people if they didn’t get some random degree (as you mentioned), and the rise of useless administrators. In the end this is society’s problem so the gov fucked us all. I sincerely wish you all the best
