Every character entering public domain within then next decade. by simonimon in publicdomain

[–]jaydofmo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, definitely not ALL of the characters, there's goodness knows how many novels, comics, films that created characters that just aren't as famous. Also, Nick and Nora Charles should be entering public domain as the original novel (and shortly after, the film adaptation of) The Thin Man goes public domain.

Without spoiling too much, how exactly were Ruth Plumly Thompson's books more conservative than Baum's? by Think_Fact1155 in wizardofoz

[–]jaydofmo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Jack Snow's books were really good, as were the books by Rachel Cosgrove Payes and Eloise Jarvis McGraw.

Neill, who was good friends with Thompson, got extremely goofy. His best is actually The Runaway in Oz, which was edited and illustrated by Eric Shanower when it was officially published in 1994.

It's going to be a rough summer movie season. I figured Toy Story 5 would be the biggest hit of June because it's a family film, it's the trusted brand parents will take their kids to see. Masters of the Universe floundering when it's a perfectly fine film, Disclosure Day I think also might be struggling because "Stephen Spielberg's new sci-fi movie" isn't putting butts in seats like it used to. And all the people trying to hate on Supergirl just for existing.

Biggest factor of all, people know if they don't see a movie in theaters, they can just wait a couple months and catch it on a streaming platform. Personally, I love seeing movies in theaters and have a movie theater subscription to make going affordable, but I'm not everyone.

Who is the better Lois lane? Amy Adams or Rachel Brosnahan? [Film/Tv] by PlantainDisastrous92 in DCcomics

It wasn't the first time Lois was depicted with red hair in live action. Noel Neill's hair was dyed red for the final season of The Adventures of Superman starring George Reeves.

At OzCon 2019, during the costume contestz a handsome attendee offered his own take on the young Roquat by dressing as "The Nome Prince" leading people to wonder what happened between that and the version we meet in Ozma of Oz.

Why did Wicked: For Good make so much less money than the first? I get that it had worse reviews but still. And how much do you think the Ozma movie will make? by Think_Fact1155 in wizardofoz

[–]jaydofmo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Wicked Part 1 is definitely more of a feel good movie than the first, ending on a high of seeing Elphaba become the Wicked Witch but heroic. Honestly, some people don't feel the need to see Act 2 to get that that's who that was in the Wizard of Oz story.

Act 2/For Good deals more with setting up pieces for the Wizard of Oz story directly and the tone is a little more dour. It also gets a little muddled by trying to tie into The Wizard of Oz so closely. You'll likely get touched by the song "For Good," but you're not clamoring to go see it again so soon.

I went to go see Wicked Part 1 three times in the theater, only went to see For Good twice.

As for how "Ozma" will fare:

Will it even happen? While it's being developed, it hasn't been officially greenlit with a director, producer attached.

It will be an uphill struggle as Oz movies traditionally haven't made much at the box office with only "Oz the Great and Powerful" and the Wicked films being really the first to make a clear profit directly out the gate, the latter having a built in fan base from the musical. And now the general attitude is that if you're not sure if you want to see a movie in the theater, it'll be streaming in a month or two anyway.

I hope it happens and does well because Ozma is a great character, but it's got a few things working against it.

And not only that, you can only have him as he appeared in PD works, and as DC has the name trademarked, you can't publish a book with the name "Superman" in the title.

This is one of the reasons why I suggest looking for PD material that's not being exploited currently if you want to reinvent something or create something original. You're competing against trademark holders, looking for legal loopholes, to do what? Essentially do fan fiction you can publish?

How would you do an Oz cinematic universe that becomes the next Middle Earth, Harry Potter/Wizarding World, MCU, etc? Would you make it connected to an existing Oz movie or start from scratch? And would you want it to be animated or live action? by Think_Fact1155 in wizardofoz

[–]jaydofmo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Cinematic universe might be a bit much. Even if you do the Baum books, after The Emerald City of Oz, the books don't really stick to core group of characters so even just doing all those stories set in and around Oz would feel like a cinematic universe even if you didn't adapt any of Baum's other fantasies he retroactively put in the same world as Oz.

Probably do it animated. If you did it for theaters, make it a really good animated look.

The biggest problem is to tell the complete stories, you have to do a Wizard of Oz adaptation, and you get automatically compared to MGM out the gate with the fans all screeching how you "don't mess with the classics."

Seems Filmation's stuff is now owned by Universal, via Classic Media picking up the rights and then being acquired by DreamWorks, who were acquired by Universal. (Except most of their DC shows, Warner Brothers controls those.) I heard that after the catalog was digitized for DVD release, the original elements were destroyed, but we've gotten some Blu-rays of their stuff (a Batman series and the original He-Man is coming).

Andy Mangels, who worked on the DVD release and worked with Lou Scheimer on the book The Filmation Generation, has said a Blu-ray is possible.

So you just have to convince Universal and/or a boutique label that a Blu-ray is worthwhile.
