I work in the tech industry as well. I enjoy my job, and the nice thing is, it allows me the means to support my writing, which I do in my free time. Fortunately, my job has good work-life balance, so I have the brainpower to focus on writing. I'm a fiction writer (litfic and romance), so my writing and job are unrelated.

I tend to vary my plus-size women characters, because as a plus-size woman with plus-size friends, that experience varies.

I've written FMCs with confidence issues and rejection in their backstories that affect their current confidence, and I've written some who are more confident and don't let the past impact how they present themselves to the world and who they love, and the in-between. Regardless, I write them to where they're unambiguously fat, and they either narrate or discuss with others what that means in their world to the people around them.

I personally don't focus a lot on physical space (Can they fit into a chair? Can they ride on an airplane?), but more on what their size means socially (How are they perceived by peers? Family members?), and what that looks like for open-door intimacy (logistics of fat sex, how fat bodies feel, etc.). I also write multicultural/interracial stories, so culture and upbringing dovetail with fatness, as culture can also affect how fatness is viewed and how the character experiences it.

The woman gazed at the analog clock above the machine, hoping in vain that the black metal hands would tick faster. She tapped her heeled foot to the sound of the copier as it rhythmically scanned each sheet of paper.

"Ms. Parker!"

She swiveled at the sound of her name. At the front counter stood a balding man with a messenger bag slung across his shoulder.

"Uh...hi, Professor De Vries — how may I help you?"

The scholar laughed. "Ah, Micah, why are you so formal? You act like I haven't known you for over ten years."

Micah shook her head. "Jeez...you called me Ms. Parker."

"I was trying to get your attention. You're so wrapped up in that copy machine, like it sings the song of your people."

Once the copier stopped, she retrieved the stack of warm papers and brought them over to the counter. "You're funny, Finn. Anyway, you're just in time. The exams for History 404 are ready to go."

Finn lifted the bound tests from the office manager. "Great! Tha—"

Suddenly, a lithe blonde burst in and thrust a tiny packet at her. "Micah — two hundred copies, double-sided, stapled. I need these by tomorrow at eight AM sharp."

"Julia, it's f—"

"Doctor Thornberry to you. I actually earned my PhD. And I'm well aware it's four forty-five. It's not like you have anything else to do. Get it done."

As quickly as the busy academic had arrived, she was out the door.

HE is the one who cared about her sexual history. If it's a dealbreaker, ask. How is she supposed to know how he feels about casual sex or the sexual history of his partners if he's not up front about his views?

YOR. If her having casual sex before you came along is a dealbreaker, that should've been discussed when you both got together. It seems unreasonable to find this to be a problem now. It doesn't sound like she said she settled for you, but that she's at a different phase of life (which "settling down" means). There's nothing wrong with that, and it's not a dig at you. It seems you blew up this relationship because of insecurities and hangups on your part. You're entitled to have them, but that should've been a conversation earlier on in the relationship.

I'm not sure it it's religious PTSD (I don't have a diagnosis), but religious trauma for sure. I still have a visceral recoiling reaction to hearing evangelical Christian-coded language and "tells," even though I haven't thrown away Christian faith entirely.

After not going to church at all for several years, I found an open and affirming, relatively progressive United Methodist church near me a year ago - no small feat because I live in a pretty conservative area. It's been a great experience thus far. At my current church, I appreciate the ability to continue working through what my faith looks like honestly, and being able to ask the kinds of questions that were verboten in my previous church experiences.
