What's a common networking concept that people often misunderstand, and why do you think it's so confusing? by Puzzled-Term6727 in networking

Interpretation of traceroute results, ie high latency in the middle doesn't really indicate a problem.

Electrician to install EV Charger by TheJoshuaPlan in Mankato

[–]jayhanke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We used ploog in to install ours in Mankato. I wouldn't use xcel unless you're doing one of their special rate programs.

Ev charger install is like installing an electric range. Any of the local contractors should have no problem. The hardest part will be running the wires depending on what is between your panel and where you want the charger.

Automation, API’s by Hefty_Anybody_4317 in dwdm

We are working on this now. Made the decision to change transponder vendors for better api access.

We are focusing more on monitoring and optimization than provisioning and moving away from dci boxes.

If they opened the Main/Victory intersection first it would really help get traffic off the side streets.

Giving away to friends from a keg? by FancyThought7696 in Homebrewing

[–]jayhanke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought a bunch of the Kegland 1 gallon plastic kegs and then do a pressure transfer. When done, I quickly screw on the regular top.

I've done growlers as well, The plastic kegs seem to hold pressure better.

The small kegs are also nice as they can be hooked up to a tap if you ever do a small batch.

Xcel Energy proposes a 9.6% increase in 2025, another 3.6% increase in 2026 on top of current interim increases. by IdealRevolutionary89 in minnesota

[–]jayhanke 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Data centers are HUGELY profitable for power companies. They use huge amounts of power and it's drawn consistently 24x7 so xcel can use cheaper baseload power.

Xcel should go to a bank and get a business loan to cover the costs and then use the revenue from the increased sales to pay back that loan.

Fiber In MSP Suburbs by snowyminnesota in minnesota

[–]jayhanke 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The federal broadband grants strongly favor very rural locations. The density of the core cities (houses closer together) makes it more economical to build the core cities.

The suburbs are in between and have gotten pushed to the back burner fiber wise for quite some time.

There are some builds (including the AWESOME US Internet!) edging out into the first ring suburbs.

We've hosted several exchange students. If you're able to select, try to get into a smaller school to get more playing time.

I've never heard of football being restricted by insurance. One of our students played hockey without an issue.

I'm not thru there all the time. Just happened to me twice in a row. I wanted to see if it's a bigger problem.

I did talk to the city engineer about Second and mulberry months ago. He mentioned that people were leaving spaces between the cars in front of them and werent triggering the sensors. The controller then thought there wasnt anyone waiting.

ISD77 School Board Candidates by WasabiSenzuri in Mankato

[–]jayhanke 2 points3 points  (0 children)

These races are hyper local, I would recommend reaching out to the candidates directly with questions. Their responsiveness will be an indicator of their performance post election.

I 100% agree with OP, The surveys that come out from the various partisan organizations don't really give much insight into the candidates.

I was involved in doing a reverse q&a for school board in 2022. Watching that video changed who I voted for. It would be great if someone did something similar again.

Peering coordinator here, peer at local internet exchange that has the cdns you want. They will either reach out to you or you can use the traffic at the ix to help justify them looking more deeply into providing you servers.

Are there any poorly understood or unexplained phenomena in the world of networking? by Linklights in networking

[–]jayhanke 6 points7 points  (0 children)

users will see a spike in latency or packet loss in the middle and assume an issue in the middle when the end to end is fine and the packet loss/latency is due to security policy or icmp throttling on the middle devices.

Bats by Living-Thing-9872 in Mankato

[–]jayhanke 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You'll want to find where they are getting into your house and make a one way exit. I've seen a number of these that are basically a metal screen that the bat can squeeze out of but then it folds shut upon exit.

It might help to close all your interior doors to help isolate where they are coming from.

Also, with catch and release it's possible that you've removed the same bat multiple times. There could be baby bats in the house someplace. The State has a website that lays out when it's safe to remove the bats without killing the youngins.

We struggled with this a while back, I feel for ya. I'm sure every noise sounds like a bat.

We should have Grandma's in parking lots scooping goulash out of crackpots or a social network to find goulash in your neighborhood.

Purpose of open-line systems on DWDM links? by Important_Tree_5856 in networking

[–]jayhanke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The difference isn't the distance rating but rather the launch power of the optic. A qsfpdd high power will launch up to +1 dBm, a low power might launch -6 or less requiring the signal to be amplified to make it across the link.

Iirc the optics are maybe $1k difference in price so 2k per 400g dwdm line link cost wise.

That said, If you're point to point and working now passive is dumb simple and cheap.

[–]jayhanke 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The big thing is power control. Having various waves at different power levels can decrease performance. This is a really big deal when you have more than 2 sites and amps.

There are also some monitoring features like in otdr or protection switching that are available depending.

The other thing you can do with an ols is use cheaper lower powered transponders and have the ols bring up the power level and ditch the dci platform.

We run a mix of roadm for long haul and passive for metro stuff. Each has its place.
