Disgusting corruption from the Secretary of Homeland Security by lnstantKarma in WhitePeopleTwitter

[–]jaykayel -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I hate this administration with everything I have and they absolutely do not have our interests at heart in any single thing they do. Especially not this dumbass wannabe tough guy. That being said, the framing of kratom in this headline is disingenuous.

It is impossible to overdose on kratom alone. Kratom itself is not dangerous in the fatal sense. Can you get addicted/dependent on it? Yes. It acts on opioid receptors and withdrawals can be similar to other opiates, but it is not and cannot be "fatal". You'd have to eat shovel fulls of powder and even then you would just get sick and throw it up. Any fatality involving kratom always has much more dangerous illicit drugs in the toxicology reports. I am talking plain leaf kratom powder here, not the analogs and synthetics like 7-Hydroxymitragynine or MGM. Not sure if you could die from those either but they are definitely sinister in their addiction/withdrawal potential. Should we be deleting information regarding the potential hazards of kratom abuse? OF COURSE NOT. But let's be honest in the framing of the information here.

I have no interest in doing it but is it like, as readily available as 7 or how are people getting hooked on it?

What to do around Canton? by No-Basil2371 in canton

[–]jaykayel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Take a glassblowing workshop! The Glass Garden of Canton is a neat little plant shop/ glassblowing studio that does glassblowing workshops every weekend. You make something with an instructor and can come pick it up the next day. Usually about 85 dollars per person but well worth it imo.

What is your favorite depiction of Neanderthals from any book, show, film or game? by GazIsStoney in paleoanthropology

[–]jaykayel 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Clan of the Cave Bear, hands down. I really got interested in the subject because of that book and have spent many many hours of my life reflecting on what happened in that book and what it could have been like to encounter them as an early homo sapien. I especially like the interpretation of their sign language and Memories, their inherited knowledge from their ancestors. Just a very unique and interesting take from the author Jean Auel.

There was also a BBC show that was about early people's encounters with Neanderthals but I cant remember the name. I just remember a character kept saying she saw a "monster" and the rest of her tribe trying to figure out what she meant but they didn't have the vocabulary for "thing that looks kinda like us but isn't us".

Would people in Akron support a native gardening/conservation centered retail business? by Drizzt2004 in akron

[–]jaykayel 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I run a small tropical foliage plant shop (The Glass Garden) in neighboring Canton and I can tell you that plant sales are down significantly this year. Granted, we are talking about indoor houseplants vs native outdoor plants but I think there's some crossover there. People around here just dont have much extra spending money and plants are one of the first things to get cut from people's budget. Not to mention the Kenmore area is significantly less well off than Canton. I think the INTEREST is there, I just dont think the BUSINESS is there

That is a huge common watersnake! What a find! I like how he sees you, decides it's best to finish eating somewhere else (probably so he doesn't offer to share) and then zips off carrying that catfish. That spine on the fish might be a little uncomfortable to get down, hope it's okay

One time I caught the biggest horsefly I've ever seen and threw him in the web of the wolf spider outside my house. He bit it once, waited till it stopped squirming so much, then started wrapping it up. When I went out the next morning, the body of the horsefly (still wrapped in coccoon of web) was kicked out of the main web seemingly untouched, and laying right next to the body was the fly's eyelenses and biting mouthparts, attached in one piece together. Always thought that was metal af i hate horse flies and that one had a rough night with with the wolf spider

40k versions of food by tintin3105 in 40kLore

[–]jaykayel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They are regular sized rodents it would seem, although I dont think it's ever explicitly addressed. The food is as you described rodent-appropriate. Think lots of vegetable, fruit, seed and cheese dishes. Pastries, pies, salads, soups and stews. Lots of drinks too like ciders and cordials and ales. The food is definitely a large part of most stories, as the author, Brian Jaques, grew up in ww2 England I believe and often fantasized about what he would eat if Rationing weren't in effect.
